Our newfound friends on the bird walk were envious when we told them about the 7 kakas on our front porch at Kaka Retreat! We loved our room, it was great for our 2 night stay - spotlessly clean, with good quality linens, bath toiletries and supplies for coffee/tea/chocolate. Water pressure was great, showers were hot, and the towel warmer... More

A great place – we plan to return! The pick-up and drop off ferry/air service is excellent. We were met from the ferry by Lynn who provided a practical orientation drive which was really useful. Our two bedroomed cottage was warm and homely with a well equipped kitchen, good sized dining and sitting area and good sized bathroom. We found... More

Stayed here last June and were blown away by the place. It was quiet, clean and spacious just set back from the road. Real well located close to the marina with lots of wildlife like parrots just flying past the window. In my book this place is 10 out of 10 with great staff to tip it off

Lynn picked us up from the depot in town and she was so welcoming and helpful. The motel itself is tucked back from the road and is very quiet. Our unit was immaculate, spacious, and comfortable. The motel is very close to town and is also convenient walking distance to the Ulva Island ferry. On our second day we were... More

Wow! There are few words to sum up the first experience, even in the dark, arriving into Stewart Island, the lovely greeting from the staff at Kaka Retreat as they collect you, warm friendly Kiwi welcome! We were blown away by the stunning native plants, the knowledge of the staff sharing local knowledge of bird life and the wee tour... More

Kaka Retreat is a great place to stay on Stewart Island. It is close to the marina and town but still in a quiet section. The desk receptionist was very friendly and very helpful! They have feeding trays for the Kakas that come in the afternoons. We would definitely go back! We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite which was... More

These ladies are fabulous. Everything from the collection after the flight to the island, the breakfasts, the service, accommodation and then the drop back to catch the flight to invercargill was fantastic. I really recommend staying here.

Great place, with resident Kakas, a bit above the town - easy walk down to food and the harbor, and less easy walk back. Nice rooms, very helpful and friendly staff. Couldn't ask for more, in a remarkable place.

We agree with Jane G, Kaka Retreat deserves "10/10" Our room was spacious, clean & tidy with an excellent kitchen & bathroom. Apart from the delightful bird song the beautiful setting was peaceful & quiet. The bed was really comfortable. Karina met us from the plane and gave us an orientation tour which was really helpful. We couldn't fault her... More
