Detailed Reviews
Recently had a stopover at Harrigans on a road trip through NSW. We particularly wanted to stay in Pokolbin. Rang the hotel to book a room, but the rate seemed high. Checked on Booking.com and found a better rate.
The hotel is set in nice vineyard surroundings. Our room was a good size, plenty of room, but looked very tired and ready for a makeover. This is the only hotel I have ever stayed in where several sets of earplugs are provided in your room. Fortunately, it was very quiet and they were not needed, no doubt largely due to the restrictions on the number of people who they could accommodate in function areas (coronavirus).
The room had all the facilities expected; TV, tea & coffee making facilities, fridge, free WiFi, which we could not connect to. The bed had a lean on it and you could feel the springs when lying down. Only one bedside lamp, which is a great annoyance for me, especially if you like to have a read before going to bed. Light in the bathroom wasn't working. There was a notice in the bathroom that it took a couple of minutes for the hot water to come through. Make it at least five minutes. Tiles in the bathroom & shower were very slippery, in fact dangerous when wet.
Because of the coronavirus restrictions, limitations were placed on the number of people who could go into the bar and the restaurant. We were offered a table outside (freezing) but we found a table in the bar early and were able to keep it for dining.

Just spent two days here and while the property looks nice and has all the features you need in a convenient location, especially to the nearby Hunter Valley Gardens, it was let down by the house keeping team.
Our room had rubbish under the bed from previous guests plus there were food crumbs on the carpet. When the room had been serviced after the first night, the house keeping team hadn't bothered to replace items such as sanitary napkin disposal bags, complimentary water or biscuits. Not a big issue but dissapointing for this class of hotel. Also the bath had not been cleaned and still had dirt in the bottom and there were footprints on the carpet that hadn't been vacuumed properly. The biggest problem was that the beds were rock hard to the point that neither my wife or I were able to get comfortable and to be able to sleep properly.

It is a great pub right in the heart of Pokolbin and the fabulous wine growing district that is the Hunter Valley. It looses a couple of points though for the following reasons 1) dining - lunch and dinner are quite good but in all good conscious I can’t recommend breakfast, you will struggle to find any staff, We stood there for a long time waiting to be seated and when a waitress finally took us to a table she promptly disappeared again leaving us to find our own menus. On doing so we discovered that the options were VERY limited - basically pig out bacon & eggs or pig put hot cakes. Plenty of cafes in the retail precinct in the very close Hunter Valley Garden so that would be my breakfast recommendation. 2) accomodation - rooms are clean and comfortable but in need of refreshment as scratches chips and cracks were quite common. The pub itself was recently extended and refurbished but evidently the budget didn’t extend to the rooms. In fairness I would stay here again but some improvement in the areas noted is needed.

We’ve stayed here a couple of times for the HVG Christmas Lights Display so a September visit was different for us. We booked the Premium Suite, which we’ve always wanted to do after catching a glimpse inside one year. The fireplace was the greatest appeal and it didn’t disappoint. Lots of firewood and fire starters available too. The suite was very clean and like the rest of Harrigans, it had a beautiful, homely feel. Our outlook over the garden was lovely and we were able to wander up to the vineyard. We were tucked away at the back and stayed mid-week so it was very quiet too. The linen was crisp and clean and the beds were comfy (firm). There are signs of ageing in the furniture and parts of the room but in all honesty, it feels so clean and maintained that they just add to the appeal of the place. Shower was great! Food was good and service at the Bistro was excellent; so handy to just wander home after eating way too much. We would book a suite for any future stays.

When you arrive here your mind goes WOW this is going to be an indulging, comfortable, relaxing place to stay with a fantastic location the gardens are so pretty and the pub is fancy and inviting but than you open the door to your room and your smile drops to the floor and so does your eyes, you see the dirty stained carpet and you don't want to take your shoes off and the mould in the bathroom were u think u will need a shower after a shower. There's dust and grim all over the walls. You try to keep the positive first impression alive so you look past it and when you notice the mouse in the bedroom run across the floor you tell yourself you didn't see it but it's no denying it when your 2 kids see it and freak out. So we move rooms to the "upgraded room" well it's a good size and great size fridge and not on ground level but the furniture is dated and it's the same unclean feeling as the first room with cockroaches running around and sleeping on your freash towels but with a 4am balloon ride your too tired and you try to sleep with your mouth closed. The next day we were moved again for the 3rd time in less than 24 hours assuming the 2nd room we were moved to was booked out, I must say this room the carpet was a little cleaner and the bedroom furniture was more updated than the first room, there was plenty of firewood so that was appreciated and we were given an $80 dining voucher as compensation which was used and the food was good but drinks are expensive but I did see a slug come out of the bottom of the mini fridge vent overall I wouldn't sleep here EVER again as it felt dirty the rooms need a facelift and a good scrub but the pub had a nice atmosphere and the food was good it's a great place for a social drink or dining experience. The staff were overall friendly but I was blocked in by another guest's car for a whole day and after making a complaint to reception the issue was never rectified it was just lucky we didn't need to travel out that day.

We were three families spread out over three separate rooms. The staff was incredibly helpful ensuring we were all able to stay in neighbouring apartments. The rooms themselves are spacious and very clean and the beds super comfortable. Being a motel, the car is right outside the door which makes it very convenient. Check in and check out was super quick and the staff gave us lots of insider tips as to where to go and how to get there. Breakfast next door at Harrigan's Pub was hot and hearty and the portions very generous. It was a great way to start the day and it meant we were well fueled for a day of wine tastings. We ended up having two dinners there as well - definitely order a steak, ours were chargrilled to perfection. Fabulous wine selection and there was plenty there to keep the kids happy too. On Saturday night, there was a live band which made for a very lively atmosphere. The accommodation is right next to the pub so you will hear noise until midnight but there are ear plugs available in the rooms and my son said they worked a treat. The rest of us were so tired we crashed at 10:30pm and heard nothing. Winter is a lovely time to go and next time we're going to get a room with an open fireplace. Highly recommend!

We chose Pokolbin as an overnight stop on our way from the Gold Coast to Sydney for an important ANZAC Day Commemoration.
Unfortunately we chose Harrigans to stay at and eat.
Firstly, the room was so dusty we needed to take antihistamines. The bathroom was dirty with grimy sink plugs and grimy floor. We we so shocked we took photos. While the sheets were clean, the beds were hard.
We went to the Harrigans bistro when it opened at 5.30pm to make a booking for dinner, only to be told by an unfriendly male staff member with a black eye, that no tables were available; when we pointed out the almost empty bistro behind him and the fact that we had travelled 12 hours to give Harrigans our $180 per night business, the black eye person got more aggressive and less understanding.
In desperation from tiredness we asked to speak to his manager and a person with an Irish accent arrived, with the same level of antagonism and rudeness as the black eye person.
A manager with the Irish accent then suggested we sit in the sports bar. When I quietly told him I was an Australian war veteran who suffered from PTSD and couldn’t take the sports bar noise, he came back with “well that’s your problem “ They finally begrudgingly offered us a table but we were so insulted that we left. Then followed sniggering as the manager and the black eye person walked away.
We’ve been travelling the world for 50 years and have never been so badly treated and insulted. We love visiting Ireland and have always experienced legendary Irish hospitality, so Harrigans is a massive disappointment and failure by those standards.
In our view Harrigans is embarrassment to Irish people and an embarrassment to the Hunter Valley.
This place should shut up shop.

We have stayed at Harriman’s a number of times however our recent stay was very disappointing. The motel is very run down. Our room had tired furniture. No soap holder in the shower, had to put the soap on the window ledge! Very basic daily cleaning. Our outside area was full of mould from leaking gutters. Our friends apartment didn’t have guttering at all due to rust! Breakfast was included in our package but when we arrived we were informed that they were not serving breakfast and we had to drive off site to have breakfast. Dinner menu very restricted and not what we had been accustomed to previously. Our room cost $200 per night including breakfast very expensive for the state of the resort! Motel would be lucky to be a 3 star rating.

Apologies for the missed soap holder this has since been replaced, apologies for the gutter as well maintenance is now aware and we thank you for letting us know. Apologies as well for not being aware that you wanted full services during your stay. These are available to all guests upon request, otherwise our housekeeping do the daily service which includes replacing bathroom amenities, making beds, dishwashing, replacing teas/coffees and a general clean up. As for the food, apologies that it was not like you are used to in previous stays. Due to COVID with little business coming to the Hunter we have had to restrict our hours, therefore only operating one breakfast area for our company, last time our sister properties breakfast was closed, where this time around it was ours that had to close. We appreciate you sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Sincerely,

I stayed one night at Harrington's in Pokolbin in Aug 2022.
Reception closed at 5pm and it's a shame I didn't check the room out properly prior to that.
Needing a loo visit, the first thing I noted was no paper "seal" across the toilet to indicate it had been cleaned. I soon discovered why when I lifted the lid. There, to my shock were somebody's poop remnants in the bowl. It was disgusting.
After flushing it and using disinfectant wipes, I could finally use it. That's when I noticed the state of the floor both in and out of the shower.
It was all so grotty!
At least the sheets were clean...I did check, but the carpet wasn't well cleaned.
In the morning I opened the curtains for a view of the vineyard. But the patio ruined it. Dirty, green with slime in patches and weeds growing between the pavers.
The upholstery on the chairs was also filthy.
Definitely not a value for money experience and I will never stay again.
On check out, I complained about the turds and lack of cleaning.
All I got was oh...I'll let the cleaners know. Bit late Luv.
I told her they would not get a pleasing review. I can say turds in the loo was something I'd not experienced in a "clean" motel before. I new experience I'm not grateful for.
The pub and food however, were fantastic.

Harrigan's is in the center of the wine region, the accommodation is spacious, comfortable and good value for money. The bar and restaurant are one the same site as accommodation, food is great pub grub, drinks are reasonably prices and the hotel has an expansive area for settling inside or outside. Ideal place to use as a base for tripping around during the day and settling in in the evening.

Check out their website. If you can't get any results that way give them a call they are very helpful. The rooms at the back near the pool are nice. I am not sure if they have any adjoining rooms or not.
There is wi fi but it will cost you. When we were told it would be available for a fee we just left it.
