Nestled near the beach, Novotel Wollongong Northbeach offers a prime location that is widely celebrated by guests for its scenic views and convenient access to local dining. While the hotel boasts a clean environment and some visitors enjoy the views from their rooms, the overall sentiment suggests a need for modernization, with numerous travelers finding the rooms outdated and not reflective of the price paid.
Guests have had varied experiences with the service and amenities, noting comfortable beds but lamenting the extra charges for essentials like Wi-Fi, which, along with noise disruptions, affects the overall perceived value and atmosphere.

Beautiful Novotel in a beautiful location at the beach. Helpful, accommodating staff. We really enjoyed spending time in the enormous lobby bar with the eye catching virtual aquarium. There is an inviting outdoor pool and bar/restaurant area. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and nicely decorated - standard Novotel rooms. The traffic situation with pulling into the driveway and getting into the parking garage was a bit confusing, with a bunch of bollards adding to the confusion. This hotel is our first choice when staying in Wollongong. Unfortunately, sometimes the price for a room can be unreasonable (the price fluctuates greatly). I would absolutely recommend this hotel if you can get it at a decent price.

Had the most wonderful stay here in April. The staff were wonderful. Helped us store our bikes and park our car which had stand up paddle boards attached. Everyone was so friendly and helpful, especially Justin at the front desk. The buffet breakfast had so much variety and we loved the newly refurbished North bar. Our rooms had balcony views and it was so relaxing to hear the ocean waves. The food was also very good and very good value for money if you have the Accor membership. We will definitely be back!

My wife, daughter and I stayed here for 6 nights for a friend’s wedding. The hotel rooms are very small, the wardrobe was tiny and our room had a mouldy smell to it. The room itself had a renovation in the past 5 years or so but it was my daughter’s so-called disabled room we had an issue with. It has carport on the floor throughout which everybody knows is not suitable for a wheelchair or a hoist! This along with the small size of the room made moving my daughter around the room very difficult. The main problem with this hotel is the POOR SERVICE! In this town there are no other 4 star hotels that could provide any competition. Which indeed is the cause of the poor standard of service. The exception to this was the fantastic young man who was working in the bar who served us bar food when we arrived on our first night. Each morning at breakfast we had to wait for a waiter to come to the always unattended front counter. Our dirty plates and cutlery sat for a long time on the table as we continued with our breakfast. As we sat there wondering when someone would appear to take the plates and cutlery, I witnessed another worker setting tables. She proceeded to put her fingers inside the clean glasses as she placed them on the table. I reported what I had observed to another waitress who told me the person was on work experience but she didn’t seem to perturbed by what I had witnessed. Some of the hot food- fried eggs were cold even though they had a heat lamp above them. On the Saturday night we decided to eat in the Palisade Restaurant, we arrived at 8.45pm and were told by a very abrupt manager, Ian, that we needed to hurry up and order as the kitchen was closing! Was this really a Novotel I was staying at? Shutting at 9. pm on a Saturday night, really? And then being told to hurry up! On a positive note, the food at Palisades was very nice and our waitress was very friendly too. She told us she’d remove the charge for the drink that did not turn up when ordered. Although when I went to pay , Ian the manager tried to argue with me about the $5 for the pineapple juice that was suppose to be removed from the bill! On one occasion room service forgot to make up one of our beds. We called about it, they came to the room and still didn’t make the bed. To top it all off, when I went to pay the bill upon checking out, I was charged $500 over what I should have paid until I pointed it out. The whole checking out process took nearly 15 minutes as the person could print out a new invoice for me to check. This hotel needs to lift its game as it has no idea what real service looks like!

The stay began with an unhelpful checkin when the staff member told me that I was not entitled to a welcome drink as a Gold Accor member. I had already received the vouchers in my app so I knew I was correct but I was not going to argue with her. I certainly was not made to feel welcomed as an Accor member and my husband asked me if I thought there was any point being a member when he heard the checkin conversation. Later that same staff member spoke to me via the phone and offered me a late check out and told me that I actually was able to receive a welcome drink. Our room had great views of the beach and the bed was very comfortable. There was only one packet of standard biscuits in the room which I think is stingy, and there was nothing to welcome me as a member. This is the first Accor hotel I’ve been to where I have not received a special treat eg fancy biscuits, chocolates or fruit. Breakfast was average. Great location, and I really enjoyed my swim in the pool.

Dear Michele, Thank you for sharing your recent experience following your stay at Novotel, Wollongong. We are saddened to hear that your stay did not meet the high standards you’ve come to expect from Accor properties and from your membership benefits. The confusion during check-in and the initial misunderstanding about your welcome drink entitlement is not reflective of the warm and attentive service we strive to provide. I will address this matter with our front desk team to ensure such oversights are avoided in the future. I am glad this was eventually resolved, but I understand the frustration it caused and regret the negative impression it left on you and your husband. I also regret that your experience as a Gold Accor member was not acknowledged with the personalised touches you deserve. It’s disappointing to hear that this fell short, as we value and greatly appreciate your loyalty. I’ve shared your feedback with our team to reinforce the importance of recognising and celebrating our valued members. While I’m delighted to know you enjoyed the location, pool, and the comfort of your room, I’m sorry that elements of your stay—such as the breakfast variety and room amenities—did not live up to expectations. Please know that are Front Office Team are available 24/7 should you require anything at all for your future stay with us. Your feedback is incredibly valuable, and I hope we can have the opportunity to restore your confidence in us on a future visit. After paying 5 star rates the hotel is 3 star at best. They have a monopoly on the area so they can charge whatever they want. We have stayed at this hotel once a year for the last 4 years and it keeps on getting worse. The hotel rooms are deteriorating fast with broken curtains and old furniture, the bathroom and kitchen supplies are absent you have to ask for each item which can take 30mins to come up and you feel like a pain. The worst of all they do not replenish the complimentary bottles of water and when we asked for some they charged us $5 each. Surely when paying thousand plus a night for a room they can supply the basics.

I am disappointed that a hotel which charges as much as Novatel North Beah adds a daily parking cost and charges for WiFi. I travel quite a bit and it's the only chain of hotels that does this (for this reason I do not use the Northbourne Ave Hotel when in Canberra). They did not note my number plate so I was delayed every time I exited the car park and had to get out of the vehicle to access the connection to reception. The safe had been damaged and could not be used for the duration of the stay. I also found it annoying to have to pay extra for barista coffee with breakfast especially as the service was very slow. Except for it's great location opposite the beach, I would be very reluctant to stay here again as I have been similarly disappointed on the other occasions when I have stayed there.

My husband and ! bought a voucher for $500 for this hotel for a charity auction. We paid slightly more than the face value which we were happy to do
We saved the voucher for our 30th wedding anniversary. On booking the hotel I advised by email that we were celebrating our milestone. We booked an ocean view balcony room at a 'cost' of $457, with parking of $30 this pretty much was the full voucher
The room was the 6th floor, the second level of accommodation. The room was large and the bathroom lovely, but that where it ended unfortunately.
Our room was in the 'v' of the building so the balcony door was small this meant you couldn't see the view from a large part of the room. The balcony looked over the roof of the lower levels of the hotel so sure you could see the ocean but it was not as nice as it could have been...just really disappointing.
Can't help thinking that because we were paying with a 'gift voucher' that we were given a lowest 'level' of room in the category we booked. I know the hotel will deny this but I am not convinced. It was a Sunday night so I am sure the hotel wasn't at capacity
The design of the room was odd too, it meant you couldn't see the TV from the lounge
Breakfast was included in our booking. It was your standard buffet, nothing wrong with it but nothing really outstanding. There was a cost for a barista coffee, which I guess is not unusual. What was really lousy though was when you ordered at a counter (rather than to hospitality staff) you were told to come back in 5 mins for the coffee. Really!!!! I would have thought delivering it to the table would be a given.
We have stayed at many hotels and these days wifi is almost always included. While it didn't inconvenience us, to have to pay for wifi if needed, unless you are a member of your loyalty program seems to me to be gouging
Lastly, we were celebrating an important milestone. A token acknowledgment of that would have been a nice touch
When we checked out, we were asked if we enjoyed our stay. I gave a very unenthusiastic "it was ok", the response was "ok". No request for feedback, nothing!. I did provide feedback but I'm not confident it will be passed on
We are unlikely to be back. The hotel is expensive, Sydney CBD prices, and just doesn't deliver

Dear SydneySally, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We understand that celebrating your 30th wedding anniversary is a significant milestone, and we regret that we fell short of your expectations. Regarding your room assignment, we want to reassure you that we do not prioritise guests based on their method of payment. However, we apologise if the room you were allocated did not fully meet your expectations for such a special occasion. Your feedback on the room design and balcony view is valuable to us, and we will certainly consider it for future improvements. Please also accept our apologies for any inconvenience you experienced with the breakfast service and the handling of coffee orders. Your comments regarding the Wi-Fi charge and the lack of acknowledgment for your milestone celebration have been duly noted, and we will review these areas to ensure a better experience for our guests in the future. Please know that your feedback is important to us, and we will take every effort to address the issues internally. We understand your hesitation to return, however hope you will reconsider and give us another opportunity to exceed your expectations in the future. Kind regards, Nadine

I don't usually write reviews but this is one of the worst hotel experiences I've had.
The hotel has been renovated in parts but it's mostly crappy (see photos). The building is tired and it feels like being in a time warp back to the 1980's.
My main gripe is I couldn't even watch tv/relax throughout my stay at night as there were weddings Friday and Saturday night and the music was blaring so loud I couldn't hear myself think. As another review noted, the windows are not double glazed and you will hear the car hoons driving for hours in a loop in a nearby park, the nightclub next door, or the wedding venue within the same building. On top of this, on Saturday night the wedding guests decided to return to a hotel room (conveniently located underneath mine), and were blasting music at 11:30pm at night. It sounded like 100 people were in the room, as well as cigarette smoke billowing up through my balcony doors. When I called reception to complain, the said they'd send security. When they eventually arrived, the guests quietened down for 5 mins then kicked right back off. When I tried calling the reception 20 mins later, they didn't pick up so I had to leave my hotel room in my pyjamas to go speak to them. Once I got to reception, the guy was lovely and he explained that the wedding had moved from the function centre to the upper suite. I told him I can't hear myself think, and I'm paying more than staying at the Shangri La in Sydney so it's not really much of a 'holiday' if I can't watch tv and can't sleep. He quickly sent a second security member up and the noise quickly stopped.
My question is, why are wedding guests allowed to even walk en mass towards a hotel room when very clearly there are other paying guests staying in rooms nearby. Surely there is a hotel policy that restricts this? If the guy working reception saw them all moving towards the upper level suite, why wasn't something done? Why did it take me, as a paying guest to leave my hotel room and follow this up and complain!? It's ridiculous if hotels think other people wouldn't be pissed off by this. If you pay $750 a night and can't watch tv, can't sleep and can't even have a conversation then I don't think you can expect positive reviews.
A few other things to note:
- there were no lights in the ceiling (ocean suite room) and it was very dark. See photos attached. - no fan in the bathroom - you can hear EVERYTHING through the walls so if you got noisy neighbours like I did then good luck - the shower door doesn't close properly so water leaks - furniture and walls are scuffed/damaged - no cushions on lounge so it's uncomfortable to sit on - couldn't access window easily with bath (no space)
Unfortunately the price I paid ($1500+ for two nights) and the experience I had does not warrant a positive review.

Very disappointed with my stay. Waited 1 hour before accessing the room because of reservation double check. When we entered our room, there was a loud noise coming from the window. We went to ask the receptionist who told us it was only in your room which is weird. We could finally change our room after 2 hours and multiple complaint. Our new room only had 2 out of four lights working and half of the charging spots not working. The mattresses were too soft and our backs were hurting the next morning. The wifi was also not working so don’t bother paying for it. The curtains don’t fully close and woke us up at 6am during the holidays. Lastly, we waited more than 30 min to receive our main meal and 30 more for dessert in the hotel restaurant. For the price, I would not recommend.
