Had high expectations and they were met very well. Great restaurants / bar / cafe on site. Staff very pleasant. The heritage displays were very interesting. Very shot walk from train station which was good for us as we didnt have a car. Had everything we needed.

This hotel in a historic building is elegant and well appointed. A short walk from the Ballarat Railway Station, and almost directly opposite the street from the Ballarat Art Gallery, this is a hotel worth considering. It is also within short walking distance to a number of eateries and shopping centres. The hotel itself has a good restaurant and cafe,...

Arrived Saturday afternoon to a closed reception desk (in the entry hall amongst RSL memorabilia) with signs pointing us to the gaming area. Together with our luggage we waited in the gaming area whilst the bar attendant dealt with pokie players and finished telephone conversations. Eventually we were checked in by an employee who arrived from somewhere. Check out was...

I went to Ballarat for the ghost tour but made the mistake of not booking in advance so I spent the evening in watching TV in my room. Pros: The room was spotless and comfortable, decorations were beautiful. I ordered a salad from room services, it was reasonably priced and delicious. Comfortable bed. Cons: The heater on the wall didn't...

We were originally booked into the adjoining Heritage Quality Inn hotel but then upgraded to a fabulous second floor suite with a super king bed, glass walled shower room and a large sitting room with a kitchenette. The room has access to the long balcony overlooking the street. It is quiet and fully air conditioned with two flat screen TVs!...

We met friends for dinner who are local, all of us enjoyed our meals including the reasonably priced wine selection. The wait and bar staff were lovely and when we had forgotten to order a main meal for one of our party they graciously prioritised the meal.

Nice hotel, very nicely furnished and good location also. Comfortable bedroom. Only thing is room is very dim, not enough lighting. The George Hotel rooms are relatively new and they are beautiful. They are more city hotel style rooms, rather than pub style. I think it is overpriced, when you can stay 5 star for much cheaper. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Ballarat's second oldest hotel, the original George Hotel building was erected in 1854. The George Hotel is located in what is known as one of Australia's most important historical streets and is opposite the Art Gallery of Ballarat, walking distance from Ballarat's Visitor Information Centre and a few doors down from the local cinemas. Over the past 3 years the hotel has undergone a major refurbishment to bring its hotel style rooms, including some apartment style accommodation, to a four and half star standard. The hotel is now also home to the Ballarat RSL with memorabilia displayed within the hotel. Newly refurbished bars and dining areas now operate seven days and at the rear is a new upmarket lounge which operates weekends for guests and discerning patrons with strict standards. One of Ballarat's most popular meeting places, The Lane offers a street cafe and alfresco dining, alongside the Lane Restaurant (popular with foodies) and Heritage Bar & Restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. ... more   less
