Once an art gallery, cafe and private residence of flamboyant Melbourne artist Mirka Mora and her husband Georges, the Tolarno Hotel has always been a creative space in St Kilda. The tradition continues at Tolarno Hotel. In a salute to the charismatic Mirka, the hotel’s walls and halls are hung with striking artworks by emerging and accomplished artists, 150+ works in total including a number of Mirka’s – guest’s often comment that it’s like staying in an art gallery. Today our 4 star hotel awards 3 major student art prizes via the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), Monash University and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the yearly winners are exhibited in the hotel foyer for 12 months. Many of the artworks in guest rooms are prize-winning student paintings; the remainder are works by prominant local artists. Combine these striking surrounds with our friendly service, well-appointed rooms and suites and location in the heart of St Kilda’s dining and entertainment precinct and you have a stay like no other. With trams just a 30-second walk from our front door offering easy access to Melbourne’s CBD attractions, shopping, restaurants, events and business precinct, you’re connected to everything the city has to offer.

For the location this hotel is great value. Our standard room had a small kitchenette, high ceilings and spacious comfortable bed. Great shower pressure to start the morning. Bold and colourful artwork gives unique character. Really friendly and helpful staff - and a relief to have flexibility when in sudden lockdown and cancellations. Would definitely stay again.

I’ve stayed at the Tolarno often over the last 9 months while travelling for work. It’s been consistently clean, warm, comfortable and safe. The building is listed / protected with wonderfully unique features, and is filled with interesting and entertaining artworks. It’s in a brilliant spot close to the beach, restaurants, bars, Albert Park and the tram is out the front door (straight to the city, Southbank, NGV). The jewel of the Tolarno is its people, Miira and Eric. They went above and beyond regularly to make sure I was comfortable and had what I needed, they were flexible and responsive (especially when I forgot to book) and I’ve valued their warmth and friendliness greatly. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Tolarno for those wanting to explore St Kilda and/ or Melbourne.

We stayed at the Tolarno in a Studio Suite for 12 nights. The room was comfortable and clean, with a balcony overlooking Fitzroy Street. There was a decent kitchen at one end with an infra red range top, fridge, microwave, sink, kettle and coffee machine and enough plates, glasses and cutlery for 4. Due to Covid restrictions, there was no daily room service but clean sheets, towels, and other supplies were happily provided when we contacted the front desk. All staff who we came into contact with were pleasant and helpful.

Forget things that don't matter (bit of frayed carpet, chip on a wall etc...), the hotel is interestingly different to the norm. Hospitality genuinely warm & friendly. Room very comfortable and well-appointed.
