Was in Palmerston North for concert last week and just happenned to park the car outside this hotel. We were looking for a place to eat and decided to have a look at this hotels bistro menu. We were pleasantly surprised not only at the range of meals offered but also the most reasonable prices. I chose the roast of...

If you are considering this hotel, then you know you are not going to get luxury. But you are going to get a spacious room for a good price, a good shower, and a convenient location for central Palmerston North. The hotel site warns there may be noise, but no hotel noise reached our room. The rubbish truck emptying the...

Everytime we go to palmy we go up to the empire for a good "Pub Food" meal. They have a good special on with about 8 to 10 choices..$15 to $18 and you get a free wine or beer too. They come with chips and salad (unless Specified) and nice a big. I would reccomend the "Beef schnitzel". We usually...

It was ok for a short stay. We arrived here late at 11pm driving from Lake Taupo, and while the reception was already close, their staff was nice enough to wait for us at the bar. The room was a letdown and since there's a big gap between the floor and the room door, you can hear pretty much everything...

Stayed one night in January 2013. Room clean and en-suite facilities very good. Managed to have a authentic Mexican meal in the restaurant served by Fernando from Guataumala. Unwittingly chose a day when Palmerston North were hosting a national stock car convention & rally so had to deal with the traffic diversion. Staff helpful & friendly.

Having stayed in hostels travelling when i was younger I know the difference between a hostel and a hotel. This was sort of a missing link. There is parking, but you dont necessarily feel your car is safe, the rooms look clean but there is something that doesn't make you feel that they are and the soundproofing is appalling. You...

THe room was very basic but for $57 was great value. The room was above a pub but no noise was evident - restaurant below was great. A five minute walk to town was great with restaurants all very close. Staff were all polite and efficient - will be staying again.

My wife and I booked this hotel as we found quite good reviews about this hotel. It is centrally located, few minutes from the shopping malls, The Square, and other fine dining places in PN. The hotel was quite cheap and the room was small but clean. It is funny that the Hotel Reception is usually closed out all the...

Not looking for flash, just needed bed for the night the Empire filled all my needs. Nice and central I used local bus system, easy to follow and fares system clear. Glad I was in a premium room further from the bar, could be noisy over weekends I think. Room was old but beautifully clean will stay again for quick...

Centrally located in Palmerston North, few minutes from The Square, shopping malls and restaurants, this hotel was quite cheap. The room was warm as at my home, clean and well organised. The staffs were friendly and helpful. The bar on ground floor was a bit noisy but definitely a place to hang out in the night. Will stay here again.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Empire Hotel has historic associations with Palmerston North - it was the city's first school. In 1890 the school was relocated and the building was converted into a hotel and has been a popular hotel both for local residents and visitors to the city. Our 14 rooms are comfortable and tidy. They have ensuite bathrooms, tea/coffee making facilities and SKY TV. Located in the city centre makes for an easy stroll to shopping and inner city attractions. The bar downstairs is one of the most popular bars in town and we also boast having Palmerston North’s only Mexican Restaurant. We’re perfect for golfers or sports teams looking to stay and enjoy the great night life of Palmerston North. With all the above, Off street parking, 18 gaming machines, Manned TAB facilities, a pool table, covered smoking areas, and only a five minute drive to airport, you can't go wrong! ... more   less
