Don't rely on bunkdown. After making a booking the owner decided to cancel my booking after a group came along and wanted a block booking. Consequently I arrived in Whangarei with no confirmed accomodation. He was not concerned that he had been a cheap shot - he is another money hungry individual that dismisses any form of reliability for his...

Beautiful 1903 house turned into hostel. We had a private room w/ensuite bathroom and shower. Our room came with a private deck. Everything in the room and in the common areas was clean and in good condition. Not immaculate or completely up to date, but definitely charming with a "grandma's house" feel to it (also, go to a hotel if...

I stayed for one night, the owner is nice but little rude. There is free parking, free wifi. Very nice house, the bunk is just ok. It's far from the center by walk (20 minutes). Lot of space, great kitchen and lounge area. Can be improved.

Disappointed to be informed after booking on line and not hearing back that this accomodation only caters for foreign tourists Can not imagine why New Zealand tourists are excluded Very impolite response when queried why our booking was not acknowledged Poor form

We are a small friendly family owned hostel who have enjoyed making guests welcome for 18 years. We have hosted many, many NZ travellers who add their local knowledge of different regions of NZ for the benefit of our international guests which we love. We are not a party hostel and we feel it is our responsibility to ensure the...

This hostel is located in an old Kauri villa. It has amazing potential with loads of character, hight sealings, original features and tons of space. It looks beautifull on the outside, the inside is a bit dated and worn but mostly clean and reasonably looked after. There are some things I would change, like make the laundry area a bit...

This place is a big house and it is run by an old couple. Once you are inside, you don't really think that it is a backpackers. I felt very comfortable during my stay. One advice: always book the place in advance and take cash, they don't have a card reader. The only negative thing is their dog which roams...

I definitely recommend the Bunkdown Lodge. I felt very comfortable from the first second I arrived and the owners are really cute and helpful! No wifi made people spend time together, play games und talk. Really refreshing!

I couldn't recommend this hostel enough! Great hosts who picked me up and dropped me off at the bus stop. Clean room. Hottest and most powerful shower ive ever had away from home. Nice garden to chill out and great communal areas, a very relaxed and cosy environment!
