I was impressed with the room, breakfast and service we had on a weekend special, using our Superannuate's Gold Card, as well. The room was very clean and comfortable and may have had old fashioned decor, but for the cost ( for Bed and breakfast) was very good value.

We did the awesome Trans-alpine train rail trip but was spoiled by the worst hotel experience. Hotel room was outdated maybe last updated in the 70's. Breakfast was below average. Scramble eggs represent more a custard serving because they used powdered egg. I was slapped with a $25 internet fee for free internet usage. Next time will not use this...

Road tripping around the South Island of NZ, stayed in more 5 other hotels during my trip. The kingsgate wins the wooden spoon as absolute worst hotel experience. How you might ask? Unfriendly, unhelpful and rude staff at reception. Oh and their 'free' wifi is capped at 30 mins, from the second you log in and runs out and that's...

We stayed in several motels throughout NZ and this was hands down the worst. Tired, rooms, terrible bathrooms, paper thin walls, receptionist couldn't manage a smile, wifi ridiculously exy. If you stay here, don't waste your money on the breakfast buffet. Such a waste of money. Eggs were powdered and horrible, coffee Undrinkable. The gentleman who worked at the bar...

IT SMELLED SO BAD... SO BAD.... MUSTY... I did not sleep whole night due to the smell. I had to use my scarf to cover my nose. The room was really dated. The bathroom was like 30 years ago style. The heater in room never heated up and noisy. Staffs rude - We had reservation for dinner at 6:15. We...

The staff are unfriendly and need to be taught the basics of customer service - eg smile! My room rate included breakfast. It was disgusting. The scrambled eggs appeared to be powdered eggs. The boiled eggs tasted like they had been on the boil for an hour. The room I had was right on the edge of the courtyard for...

The place is plain on the outside but quite magnificent inside. It has a lovely grand feeling of days gone by when hotels were not just for accommodation but a destination in themselves. It is well maintained in the public areas with some lovely features and pleasing décor, but disappointingly my room was in need of lots of minor repairs.The...

As the only full service hotel in town it tends to get booked by corporate travel agents. Beware! The rooms don't seem to have been touched in 30 years and the furniture and fittings are very tired. Didn't bother with the restaurant and had a good meal at the nearby Railway

I had left a very good coat here and contacted the hotel the afternoon I checked out. They sent my coat by next day post which met me at my next hotel, which was greatly appreciated! Thank you! Lovely restaurant too.

We visited this Hotel as part of a tour group and had a lovely view on the 6th floor overlooking the town. Apparently the Hotel is slowly upgrading and renovating the rooms and our room was clean and modern. The bed was very large and comfortable and the room was spacious. Others in our group appeared to be in rooms...
