How the hell can anyone in their right mind stay here. Filthy from the ground up.Run by drop kick hippies who dont care about anything. The worst accommodation in town. For the money you can get a motel room elsewhere. Art gallery? pigs bum it is. The place is displayed with crap paintings done by drugo's on the move. What...

I booked this hostel over the phone and specifically asked about the reference too 'over 50 age restriction' (?!) I was told this referred to dorm rooms only This hostel exactly resembles poor student digs of old. All the facilities really need updating and it was amongst the most expensive hostels we stayed in in New Zealand. I really wouldn't...

The hostel is nice and a bit unusual, what gives it a special charme. Not everything match together but that highlight the artist theme of the hostel. But it can be bothering that check in should be before the Pinguin "Show" (City is famous for) otherwise it is 5$ extra cost (after 8 pm). Pay with Cc is additional 5%....

this is a very artistic backpackers, our dorm is just next to the kitchen at second floor, so the oily smell will stay in our dorm. expensive washing machine and dryer, we ended up didnt use these facilities. kitchen was very dirty, we didnt blame the owner, it is the residents who didnt wash their dishes.

Thank you for your review, yes there was a gap under a door that use to access the kitchen directly from the 8 dorm before it was a dorm, this door is closed off and not used and there was a gap under the door, we have sealed this now and the room should be smelling like roses again. We...

This is a 'backpackers run backpackers' with no free wifi (come on its OAMARU not a rural sheep farm we even got 20mb in a farmstay we stayed before) and heaps of long term backpackers staying here. The first night was not that bad except some backpackers talking loudly late night in the 2nd floor lounge which we could hear...

Tip of the day - if you don't like to be in a hostel where everyone is communicating with each other, a hostel that has free WiFi is a good option - everyone will be on their devices. Warm Regards Kelly and Staff at Chillawhile

Would only recommend for a stay of NZ40 and below a night, not worth anything more than that. Location: Average Room: No towel, no tv/extra information Checkin/out timing: Limited Parking: Not recommended to park in the compound as it is very limited and tight Service: Below average Amenities: Could do with more cleaning Overall, its a below average stay.

The backpackers is located 2,6 away from the town center, so be ready to walk if you don't have a car! The staff was really friendly, and everything looks warm and cosy. The kitchens are really small but there are three of them in total so it's never crowded. Same thing for the bathroom and the toilets (though I have...

Absolutely amazing hostel with the best staff. It's a small hostel with an art gallery (with free art supplies!), a great collection of musical instruments and multiple kitchens, so it never really feels crowded. Come on a Thursday for the best potluck dinner you will ever have!
