Our favourite two cafes in Oamaru were full so we wandered into the Criterion Hotel for lunch. Big mistake. We ordered fish and chips and it was not good. It arrived with no salad and nothing except two small pieces of what we think was fish and some chips. Poor presentation and poor value for money. We wondered why the...

We were just here for pub food. My husband and I shared a platter of fish and chips and some beer. You order and pay at the bar. After nursing our beer for over a half an hour and still having a long drive ahead of us, I asked about our order. The wait person had forgotten to place the...

Situated at the heart of the Victorian Oamaru, the hotel was part of the scenery and look. It is an impressive building and it can be seen it was super prestigious at it time. The rooms were nice and shower/bath facilities clean. Bed was too soft for us but that's a preference issue. Wifi was ok but not amazing. Checkin...

The locks on the doors are self-locking, without having to press a button or anything. So I can hardly have been the first person, to lock myself out. But even if I am, that's on me, I had just forgotten about it. What I think is less excusable, was that there was no night portier or any other staff on...

Last evening 14th February 14 of us dined at the Criterion to celebrate a birthday. Every one of us thought our meals were delicious. We all had mostly different choices which were fresh, tasty, a good size and nicely presented. The tasting plate for dessert was beautiful....in fact divine!! Prices are good and wine good both red and white. Service...

Totally rate this place. Outstanding food, great choice of drinks. Casual atmosphere and you can't go wrong if you want to unwind after traveling all day. Outstanding staff with knowledge of the menu. Lovely area of town. I recommend the eye fillet.

We were very comfortable with our three rooms in this hotel. Such clever decore and ambience. Spotlessly clean and generous provisions. Amazing location and we enjoyed the fact that we could go to the beach and see penguins for ourselves and then walk back to the hotel and enjoy a hot chocolate. Generous lunch menu and portion sizes too. Very...

This is a small heritage hotel built in 1877. We chose it as somewhere different to motels and modern hotels. Has only 8 rooms with 2 shared bathrooms, small dining room with supplies for a continental breakfast and a kitchen all upstairs above the bar. Features of the original hotel have been retained. Staff were friendly and helpful and accommodation...

We stayed here for one night on a stopover to see the penguins. I hadn't realised we had a shared bathroom but that wasn't an issue as the bathrooms were clean and bright. The room was very small though with only a double bed and 2 bedside tables - no space for our luggage and motorbike gear. By the time...

The rooms at the Criterion are quite basic above the pub, but I had no complaints. It's an interesting building with no doubt an interesting history. The staff were friendly and the Criterion is in a great position if you're visiting the penguin colony.
