The hotel Picinguaba overlooks a peaceful bay at the heart of the Natural Park of Serra do Mar, the tropical coastal forest running between Rio and São Paulo, about half an hour's drive south of Paraty. It is the only charming hotel in a 30km radius. It faces the sea and a 3 km-long protected sandy beach. The hotel offers (09) nine comfortable rooms all opening onto the natural surroundings and the sea, including a dream honeymoon Suite with en suite jacuzzi and a breathtaking view of the ocean. The local road stops at the beach and one has to walk the last 250m to the hotel, nestled in the forest.Everything here is attuned to the spirit of the place, with nothing to disturb nature's magic: no TV or telephone in the rooms, no Internet, no air-conditioning. This place is for you to be in a different world, the only sounds are the wind in the palm trees and the sea gently lapping the shore.Pousada Picinguaba was selected in HIP HOTELS as one of the 80 most extraordinary hotels around the world and was featured in National Geographic Stay List 2011.

Getting there
Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
An idyllic and very beautiful place. Perfect to disconnect and enjoy Brazilian exoticism.
The concept of breakfasts and dinners, of which we have read complaints in some reviews, that there is no usual buffet that is offered in most hotels, is sustainable and avoids food waste, we liked it. All products are very fresh and local. We have greatly enjoyed the breakfasts and dinners.
The only drawbacks we have is that on the booking page it is indicated that the hotel has its own parking, but it is not written that the parking lot is about 7 minutes walking down a hill passing through the town. According to Google Maps you can get directly to the hotel, but when you get to the town (turning from the main road and passing about 10' along a bumpy road) the road ends at the beach. You have to call the hotel, wait for the arrival of a hotel worker who arrives with a cart to indicate where the parking is located and to help with the suitcases. After a long trip it is quite tiring and a little disappointing. It would be good to receive some information from the hotel about this arrival a couple of days before the trip.
The 25m2 double room, due to its configuration, is quite small for 3 people to stay in for 5 days. There is very little space to store things and suitcases. And the price of the extra bed of R$600/€100 per night seems very expensive to us.
Despite all this we return!

Firstly a little about getting there. It is about 3 hours from Angra Dos Reiss and around 40 minutes away from Paraty. You come off the main coast road and drive for about a mile and a half down a pot holed road. Evidently it was meant to have been re-paved 18 months ago but the council have not got round to it (sound familiar?).
The village (and it is a village of about 600) sits on a sandy strip of unmade road with half a dozen restaurants and bars on either side. It is a fishing village but a lot of the boats now seem to ferry tourists to nearby islands and beaches.
The Pousada is up a hill so you need to walk the last 300 yards. Make sure you let the Pousada know your time of arrival and they will send someone to collect your bags.
The Pousada itself sits on a hill and has a fantastic view out over the bay. It is very oldy worldy and much as you would expect on old Portuguese colonial house to be. I think it has around 20 rooms. We were slightly out of season so only us an a family there.
The pool furniture was a bit uncomfortable and could do with renewing as could the upholstery for the lobby furniture. The shutters in the room were a bit of a struggle t open and close.
However, none of this should take away from the sheer charm of the place. To be able to sit on the balcony and watch the parakeets, hummingbirds and other bird life was the ultimate destresser.
Not much choice for the evening meals if you chose to eat there which we did for 4 nights. It was 4 fish dishes cooked in different ways and beautifully by Camilla.
It is not a place for party animals. No tv and only internet access in the lobby. However, if you are looking for a place to relax and be at one with nature this is it, They have another property in the mountains which we would have loved to have tired. Maybe next time.
Highly recommended.

Hello, thank you so much for you comment! You're right! We are a place to relax and be at one with nature :) The fishing village is still very preserved, out of time. Indeed during the weekends and holidays the fishermen ferry a few turists to visit a beautiful island nearby called Ilhas das Couves. Apart from these moments, the place is shared with locals only, which gives to the village a special and authentic atmosfere. Our pousada has 10 rooms and one villa ;) Looking forward to hosting you again. Kind regards.

Pousada Picinguaba is a true jewel on the north coast of São Paulo. Some factors lead me to believe that this is an essential hospitality service in Brazil! Environmentally and socially conscious, the inn practices sustainability in all its pillars. Excellent service and attentive, well-trained staff (special thanks to Francisco and Vilian). Delicious, conscious, affective food - some of the flavors here you will take with you for life. The inn is elegantly decorated, has all the amenities a hotel has, as well as being a perfect space to recharge your batteries and reconnect with nature. Picinguaba is beautiful. Thank you Manu for the welcome!

The Pousada Picinguaba is a refuge in the Atlantic Forest! It was wonderful days of rest, delicious food and an unforgettable view. In addition to taking advantage of the pool with a breathtaking view, we did SUP and a boat ride in the late afternoon. I leave here my special thanks to the entire staff of the Pousada, you are incredible.

Just a little miracle. Nested on top of Pincinguaba - a small fishermen village enjoying the unique privilege of State natural park protection - this one-of-its kind boutique hotel created and run by Manu and Bianca is just the perfect place to unwind and immerge in nature! The view from the swimming pool and its amazing terrace is breathtaking all day long. And if that weren't enough you come across tucans, colibris, little sagui monkis and many flashy others! Just a stone's throw away is the Fazenda Beach, making you feel like a cast away: beautiful, immense... empty (but you can get your Caipirinha and grilled fish back to the hotel)! As a Frenchman I love food. And I was not disappointed! The breakfast is a delight, like everything else. All freshly prepared by great cooks, and 100% organic. Rediscover what taste means! I forgot to mention the sunsets, that you can also go enjoy from the house's boat moored in the bay, the great staff, and, and...and... But shhhht. Don't spread the word too much. Well, okay, a last tip: after enjoying the sea at Picinguaba rush to Fazenda Catuçaba to discover the charms of this property and the country side around it, retreat in fabulous secluded houses, ride horses and more! Go check out too! After a week at Picinguaba I'm finishing a one week stay there at the Lake house (yes it has its private lake!) Can't resolve to leave and get back to rainy Northern Europe!

I had great expectations about the place based on the photos, history and price, but I confess that there was disappointment upon arrival. Although comfortable, with a beautiful view and a delicious homemade breakfast, the maintenance of the place leaves something to be desired: my room had a warped door that wouldn't close, causing insects to enter, and the bed's mosquito net had holes in it. In terms of cleanliness, there was a cockroach in the room and a clump of hair on the floor. The bathroom shower was good, but the bathroom was also very old. The common areas are beautiful, but it is noticeable that they need maintenance. The team that works there is very friendly and helpful, very kind with loading bags, breakfast and services. There are also a lack of options in the restaurant. The inn is good, yes, but the cost-benefit is not, the daily price is quite high considering the delivery. It is important to know that there is no TV or WiFi in the room.

We stayed for three nights on arrival in Brazil prior to a trip to the pantanal. It wasn’t the busy season so we had the pousada more or less to ourself. We were fantastically well looked after by Isa, Francisco, James and Clarissa. We passed the time in the beautiful gardens watching the birds and had a visit from a troop of marmosets. We also visited the fishing village of Picinguaba which has some very nice restaurants and bars overlooking the beach. There is a nice 30 minute walk across to beautiful praia fazenda which is a protected area of coastline and so is totally free of any development. The pousada organised also for us an afternoon visiting a quilombo which is a community in the rainforest (originally founded by freed or escaped slaves) and a walk through the forest with an excellent and friendly guide who explained many things about the area and the surrounding nature. I also should mention the delicious food at the pousada prepared fresh from the surrounding area and the farm linked to the pousada. Additionally the fish was from the local fishermen and was of excellent quality and beautifully prepared. We had such a relaxing time here and would highly recommend it!

We had a wonderful stay at Pousada Picinguaba. The view was just spectacular. The pool was incredible. The food was delicious and so fresh, and dinner was included. The fishing village of Picinguaba is charming and relaxed, with some really cool little quiosques and restaurants serving up fresh fish and very cold beer. You can take a short boat ride — like we did — to ilha das couves, which has a spectacular beach.
We loved our stay, but in our experience traveling inside and outside of Brazil, Pousada Picinguaba was overpriced. We spent around 340 USD per night. It probably would be more appropriately priced somewhere between $200 and $225. We want to return to Picinguaba — and may come back to the Pousada for a delicious lunch — but with the price where it is now, we probably won’t be staying here.

Hello Terry, Thank you so much for your feedback. Your price suggestion would be reasonable if it wasn't for a place in such remote and preserved location, that provides comfort, high quality food and a extremetly loving service led by a local team. Our value is intrinsicly linked to the experience of the surroundings and of the community. Even so, we took into consideration your comment and we are improving further our services to aggregate more value to the stay. We are also implementing a low season rate, which would make the stay more affordable. We hope to host you again soon!

Pousada Picinguaba is something unique and very special, where exhuberant and beautiful tropical Nature is the deserved star of the show. Our family have returned here many times over the years and it has a special place in our hearts. Nestled above a tiny caicara fishing village within a state park, the pousada has views across the bay to die for, & local genuine smiles and hospitality to warm and relax you. As if that wasn't enough There's an amazing slow food restaurant - organic, fresh, local produce beautifully and skillfully prepared - truly a rare find. Simplicity is never easily achieved, it takes vision and purpose. Come here to really relax as well as to explore this stunning untouched slice of Brazil's Costa Verde

We stayed at Pousada Picinguaba for almost two weeks and had a wonderful stay. The hotel is only a short walk (up the hill) from the beach of the minuscule and idyllic village of Picinguaba and boosts some incredible views - especially during sunset. You never really feel like you're in a hotel, it feels like you are a guest in some friend's hacienda. The kitchen serves delicious local food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. After almost two weeks it got a little repetitive obviously, but we didn't mind because some of us were vegetarian. The rooms are a little small but very cozy. The only thing that I had a bit of an issue with, was the size of the bed. I haven't measured it but I am pretty certain that it was queen sized and after asking at the reception, they told me that all beds were that size - which was a bit unfortunate because I am quite tall. But all in all it was such a great experience, we will for sure come again!
