Detailed Reviews
We recently stayed at the Clare Country Club following an industry event at the nearby Clare Golf Club. Our room as a "spa room" overlooking a dry lake. It's a peaceful location, away from the main conference and reception areas, with hardly a noise and a lovely outlook from a large glass windows through trees and across the lake. The room was part of two in a stand alone building. You entered both rooms from outside into a small shared hallway and then a door into your own room.
The room was large and the king bed very comfortable. It looked and smelt very clean when we arrived. The bathroom was large, the shower was powerful and there was plenty of South Australian made washes and hair treatments (from Nood at Littlehampton).
A few niggles though. (Not deal breakers, but enough to take the shine off our experience). The room doors are heavy and slam loudly. When the people in our adjoining room entered and left, their doors slammed very loudly (twice - the room door and the external door). We did our best not to disturb them in the same way, but the weight and design of the doors made it near impossible. The doors need some kind of impact absorption around the frame to reduce the noise and in turn the disturbance of adjacent guests.
There was a bright green light in what looked like a fire alarm in the ceiling that strongly illuminated the room. Combined with a strong green light on the air conditioner, it wasn't very dark. We had hoped that away from street and urban lights we wouldn't encounter the curse of light pollution in a hotel room. Neither of us had a restful sleep. Finally, there was nowhere to sit, other than table chairs and on the bed. The room was large enough for a small sofa, or relaxed chairs, where one could sit and read, or watch TV. In our room, we identified a couple of places where such seats could go.

We stayed in the oldest part of this large motel. Room was large. Bed really needed a new mattress. After some education by myself, the AC was mastered and excellent. Stayed three bites. Today we returned to a methane filled room. The toilet u- drain had drained nearly dry and fumes filled the air.
This was easily cleared by flushing and opening the sliding door for fresh air. Staff at breakfast were helpful and efficient. Breakfast was reasonable. I wouldn’t say excellent. Quite Ok. Bathroom was newly renovated and excellent as well as spacious, like the room.
Recommended.

Managed to get good value in January. Our room was very clean and tidy inside. There just needs to be some more maintenance outside such as sweeping down webs. The sliding doors need replacing, otherwise all good.
Staff were very helpful and attentive.
The main reception area has the traditional country club feel about it, with chester lounges, a perfect place to sit and have a drink.
Did not dine at the inhouse restaurant as it is too expensive for my tastes. There needs to be more budget options for dining which would boost numbers.

As travel is pretty restricted during Covid, hubby and I decided to support local for a romantic break. We booked a spa room at Clare Country Club in Clare for 2 nights hoping for a bit of luxury as is normally the case at a “country club”. The hotel is a good location for a visit to the Clare valley with easy access to the Riesling trail, local wineries and towns.
On arrival I felt the room was totally underwhelming, it was dull and plain. The bed looked like one of my teenagers had made it with loose sheets and only 2 pillows. The wifi was hopeless so we gave up trying to connect which was annoying as I had a couple of quick zoom meetings I wanted to do whilst I was there. There was no streaming services, or smart capabilities on the tv so we were stuck with the usual mainstream rubbish.
I have never given a negative review so far for any place I’ve stayed and would have probably let this go had I not had a pretty dreadful experience at breakfast both mornings also. I understand venues need to adjust to comply with new Covid restrictions but waiting over 1 hour to be served with breakfast was a bit much, especially when you only stay for a short time and need to cram everything in. So many people were complaining to the staff about the wait. The 2 young girls on duty did a grand job with lots of apologies and smiles but I would say to the Management - you need to look at how you are dealing with breakfasts. I understand you can’t do buffet anymore and serving everyone means more staff costs however if I had perhaps been asked to elect a time for breakfast on arrival and Covid restrictions was sited as a reason,I would have been more than happy to comply. I was advised that my room wouldn’t be serviced during my stay due to Covid and I accepted this without question.
Clare Country Club in my opinion doesn’t hold up to its status as a country club. The rooms need brightened up and staff need to give a bit of attention to the little things - like putting the toilets out of order to clean for at least an hour during breakfast serving time which is surely where the majority of your guests are at that time.

Thank you for your honest feedback from your stay, we're obviously disappointed we didn't meet expectations for your stay. Breakfast over the last couple of weeks had been exceptionally popular with high demand and we have already reviewed this and implemented bookings as you have suggested. We hope to be connected to the NBN when the roll-out reaches us and apologise for the issues you had connecting. We do hope you otherwise enjoyed your getaway to Clare.

I checked out of room 30 of the 1834 managed Clare Country Club today 18/08 and no major drama's. The room was prepaid. It was quiet & relatively a couple of carpet stains & the lampshades were worn. A few hours later I received a call from Steve saying my card would be charged for a replacement pump soap dispenser. I would have stayed here over 20 times and nothing like this. Last Weekend I stayed at the 1834 Mayfair no drama's other than a double charge for parking that is being sorted out. I went back to the office and asked to speak to Steve & phoned too but was told he had gone for a walk. It is not good enough. I feel absolutely astounded to be accused of taking a soap dispenser.

Thank your for your review John, we do apologise that a simple courtesy phone call regarding room amenities has resulted in a one star review, as a tourism operator in the valley you no doubt know how detrimental that can be. As advised by the front desk staff on your return to the property your card wasn't charged, nor would it be as we were waiting to hear back after you had checked with your wife. We apologise for any misunderstanding or distress caused and that Steve was at the bank and post office when you rang.

Check-in was simple, lovely service accomodating us for dinner in the restuarant when arriving late. Main was very impressive. Melt in the mouth, so hats off to the chef. We chose to have desert and a bottle of wine, which we were allowed to take back to our room. Staff wrapped it up beautifully. Desert wasn't quite on par with the main meal, but delicious nontheless.
Breakfast the next morning was also enjoyable. More than I could possibly eat :) Considering the situation with COVID-19, and no buffet, the staff did a wonderful job. Juice, coffee, water, fresh fruit, greek yoghurt, cereals and large hot breakfast plate. You want for nothing.
But - and that is a huge BUT! Room and restuarant decor was old, and in desperate need for an update. I felt like I stepped back into the 90s. The furniture was old and worn. You could see the bathroom had been updated, but the door trims and doors were dirty, a few mouldy issues and "body hair" in the shower cubicle, not to mention the drain. And these things are just basics when cleaning a room for guests. It shouldn't be happening, especially when a business calls itself a "Country Club". You really expect quality. Pros were the large fluffy towels and excellent water pressure. Bed was hard, but still comfortable.
Outside was dry and the grounds needed attention. Lake empty. No longer looks like the photos of yesteryear.
We would possibly stay again, but would definately return to the restuarant.

We have spent many times at the clare country and have also loved it, but this time was different.
I know COVID is a problem, but surely someone could have come around with a trolley (for people staying more then one night) with clean towels and refill tea coffee etc.
The windows’s hadn’t been cleaned for a long while.
Breakfast .... for three days we had cold hard toast, the last day it was burnt how hard is to cook toast.
We will not be recommending the country club until it improves a lot which is a pity.

This place was tired and for the price that we paid I expected the bathroom to be at least clean and the outside furniture to be dust and cob web free. The spa was a bath tub and not all jets worked and the water pressure was below par. Wifi password was not offered. Bathrobes were threadbare and falling apart and for the price you pay for the room, you'd expect an ironing board that had the padding under the cover not just the metal frame.
Not to mention that they staff when we checked out didn't even ask how our stay was.
Very disappointed and would not recommend and will never stay here again.

Highly recommend. From spacious clean rooms to friendly and helpful staff.
Restaurant very good. Dinner and service excellent.
Lovely location. Aspect from room calming. Surrounds well maintained. The who came ducks visiting outside the room in the morning just added to the overall experience and ambience.

We stayed 1 night, we were really surprised by the state of the accommodation based on what we paid. The rate was the same as staying in some of the very good hotels in Sydney, but the quality of the room decor was really poor. Very old and tired, stained furniture, and it sounds entitled and petty and first world, but i can't remember the last time i even saw sheets with 50% polyester! On the plus side, the bathroom had been renovated and was very clean, so the problem is not the standard room cleaning or staff, but the lack of upgrading. Reception was very friendly and efficient. They didn't ask me whether everything had been fine when I checked out. Which is probably telling in itself.
