Thank you Massimo, Giovanni and staff! La Locanda is a marvellous place to dine and enjoy this part of Tuscany. First the food - excellent quality, fresh, well-prepared and presented. The staff - attentive and accommodating to all - especially cyclists rolling in after long climbs. Highly recommend this place. I dare say, Massimo's risotto rivals that of my wife!...

We found this restaurant on a bike ride and had such a good meal that we brought back a big group of friends. There's limited and informal outdoor seating in a terrace on one side of the restaurant. That seems to be used more for drinks. The inside seating is quite classy but the back of the restaurant has a...

The rooms are lovely, the location is great, the restaurant was wonderful and best of all was the host, Massimo. He was there to help out with everything, giving us a lift when needed, giving us advice, and just being a lovely and helpful host.

A must-stay hotel in the heart of beautiful Tuscany. In truffle season (April and September) it's a foodie paradise. Excellent Tuscan wines too, especially Brunello. You need a hire car- very cheap generally- but with one this is a great base for seeing the best of Tuscany - Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano and so on. And the owner Massimo is always...

My husband came in for dinner one late night and ended up staying way past closing time with the owner and his friend enjoying great conversation, music and wonderful hospitality. The owner, Massimo, made us feel very welcome and it's worth a visit just to hang out with the great people that stay at the Castello. Great laughs, great memories!

Returned after a break of a few years to find that it has become better than ever. Giovanni, the chef surpasses himself daily with phenomenal Tuscan cuisine. Massimo, the owner is a constant presence and always helpful and fun. Martina, the day manager will do everything that makes your stay a pleasure, including booking tickets for the Uffizi Gallery. We stayed in a villa 2km from the village where this hotel is situated so decided to pop up for an early evening drink with our two children. On arrival, the waitress delayed greeting us at the front desk. After a couple of minutes, she came to see what we wanted without welcoming us. We asked if we could have...

Dear Rillie, first of all, thank you very much for coming in our Restaurant. All our guest are welcome here, both for a drink or for food. All our staff is always very kind and polite, beacause this is our FIRST work's rule. Rudness does not exists in our work's dictionary. We are very sorry if our staff appears unpolite...

San Giovanni is not the most fashionable village in the area, but La Locanda is the perfect oasis where to catch up after a day of wondering and wandering around the Montalcino and Val d'Orcia hills. Situated in a sleepy hamlet, La Locanda del Castello is a charming place to spend a few days whilst exploring southern Tuscany's towns and villages. Our large double room was simply decorated, very clean with a good sized efficient shower. The free WiFi was reliable and the A/C was essential given the near 40 degree temperatures outside. We only sampled...

We stayed here for five nights in August and had a truly wonderful time. Each day we ventured off and explored the various wineries and townships. The best way to describe the location is halfway to Brunello and Nobilis. Massimo the host was very hospitable and generous and ensured our stay was perfect. The place is ancient and charming and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking for a Hotel and a Restaurant in the heart of Tuscany south of Siena, in the middle of the three renowned wine districts of Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano, and set inside the unique and unspoiled landscapes of the Crete Senese and Val d' Orica ? LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO is the answer. Is a XVI century building which has been recently restored into a small hotel in the ancient and peaceful hamlet of San Giovanni d' Asso, celebrated for its famous white truffles. Just outside the village there is the wonderful garden "Bosco Della Ragnaia" created by the American artist Sheppard Craig. The territory is rich of history, with many hamlets, castles and abbeys to discover; rich for its natural hot springs with the chance of relaxing yourself in spas and spoiling yourself with massages and beauty treatments. Moreover if your Clients likes to do sports while on holiday, there is the chance of going horse riding, trekking, biking or have the wonderful experience of admiring the area from above on a hot air balloon. Not to forget the gastronomy experience this territory is able to offer: the Clients may visit some of the many wineries of the region and taste it's famous wines, in addition to the other main products of the area such as olive oil, cheese and truffle; and if they are willing to know more about the Tuscan food they may choose to take cooking classes in order to be able to remember the flavors of our region once back home. The Hotel LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO offers 9 rooms all finely restored and divided in the following room categories (3 standard, 3 Superior and 3 Suites). All the bedrooms are provided with a matrimonial bed and a bathroom with shower and hairdryer, a/c, satellite TV, telephone, mini-bar, safekeeping box and free wi-fi internet connection. The suites have an extra sitting area for relaxing. The restaurant LA LOCANDA DEL CASTELLO is located on the ground floor of the building, which once housed an olive press. It offers its guests the genuine flavors of traditional Tuscan cooking. Amongst its delicious specialties are the local white and black truffle (we also organize special truffle hunting), pecorino cheese, Senese salami, honey and saffron, with a selection of the most well-known Tuscan wines. In the warmer weather, one can eat outside in the small hamlet square enjoying the atmosphere of the old village, or alternately in the comfort and shade of the back terrace. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information you might need. ... more   less

“The bed in our room #6 was as hard as a rock which explains the "poor" sleep quality. However, if you want good WiFi access, this is the best room to stay in. We started in Room #8 which was recommended on this board, but there is no WiFi if that is important to you.”
