Detailed Reviews
Always excellent…
This is our third time here. As has now come to be expected the staff, all the staff, are friendly, helpful, smiling and generous with their support and assistance. The facilities are all first class. The indoor and outdoor pools are spotless, the lawns manicured, the apartments excellent and the location is second to none. Our early morning walks on the adjacent beach start each day with invigoration and a certain karma. Just love it here and look forward to next year. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

Our family has been coming to the Quinta do Lago Country Club for years. The Location is brilliant - a short walk to the beach and close to golf. The apartments are spacious and most have been recently refurbished. The staff are all very friendly and always provide great service. The facilities are continually updated and having both indoor and outdoor pools is great for all weather. The poolside cafe is perfect for a Summer lunch. The gym, although not large, is well equipped and maintained.

The apartment was superb. The grounds impeccably manicured. The location is unbeatable being immediately adjacent to the beach and a host of the best restaurants. The staff beyond wonderful. Kind, patient, helpful, efficient, accommodating and friendly. Always smiling. We go every year and each year we appreciate the place even more. I cannot recommend the place more highly.

Currently staying at the hotel but not impressed by the food. My son just ordered a well done burger from the pool bar and after 45 minutes it arrived … the outside was charred but the inside was just raw mince. Not a great start to the holiday. Fingers crossed he won’t be ill !

Very nice accommodation. Stayed on 3rd floor with view mainly of lake. Very spacious 2 bedroom apartment for family of 4. Extremely fresh and clean (cleaned daily) . Excellent location close to board walk & lake.
Only slight negative note is no kids club or kids entertainment which isn't surprising as it's quite a small resort property. Greet kids pool though.
Pool bar is good with service until 8pm.

Qunita do Lago followed Vale do Lobo to become the leading 'Country Club' in the Algarve (followed by the 'Beach Clubs' of Pine Cliffs, Dunas Doradas and Martinhal).
The Algarve is a desolate place (almost a desert) which built tower blocks in Albuferia in the 1970s for cheap holiday deals. The beaches are amazing (go on for miles) however as they back on to the Atlantic, the water is colder than the Med and the drop off into deep water is faster. The 'Country Clubs' were a development in the 1990s to turn large vacant plots behind the beaches into up-market golf holidays and secondary locations for tax-exiles. The 'Beach Clubs' appeared in the naughties to address the major failings of the 'Country Clubs' (which were that they were set too far back from the beaches, and that not everyone wants to play golf in +35 degree heat).
People either love or hate the 'Country Club' formula:
(1) Loves being - high standard of accommodation, wider range of dining options, good facilities (esp. tennis, golf, pools etc. including kids clubs etc.) and very social (I know people who have been going to them with same friends for years).
(2) Hates being - expensive (all the on-site restaurants plus supermarkets are 2-3x cost of off-site options), sterile (you have no sense of being in a foreign country), sprawling (most are on big campuses with +25 min walks in +35 degree heat to get around).
Recommendations:
(a) Having stayed in most of these places (and enjoyed them), I would really really recommend to anyone (even on week long stays), to hire a car. The cost savings alone (supermarkets and restaurants) will pay for it (even on one week), and it will allow you to greatly increase your dining and day trip options (plus avoid the +25 min walks in 35 degree heat !). However note that it has become very hard to hire cars at shot notice in the Algarve - book ahead !
(b) If the golf aspect is not a major element to you, then I think the 'Beach Clubs' could be a better bet - much more intimate and integrated resorts and less sprawling. The 'Beach Clubs' are also much younger so the standard of accommodation is usually much higher. Dunas Doradas sits right between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago anyway if you need to play a round.
In terms of comparison, Quinta do Lago is the biggest and most desirable, although most of Quinta's non-villa accommodation is also quite ageing vs. say Dunas Doradas or Martinhal. It has several of Portugal's (and Europe's) best golf courses. Quinta's biggest drawback is that it really is sprawling (i.e. a car really is really essential) and is very disconnected from the beach (unlike Vale do Lobo) - it could be any country club in Arizona. It is very convenient and actually sits about 2 miles from the end of the Faro Airport runway (unusual positioning for such an upmarket club - there is always a plane overhead at almost all times).

We were there last year and the breakfast/restaurant wasn't open at evenings but the pool bar was and food was good. There's The Shack which is pub/ restaurant and a steakhouse both within walking distance.
