Stayed in a ground floor apartment. Very spacious and pretty clean. Nice sized private garden.

Generally a good resort but accommodation & pool area is dated. Feels like it is badly in need of freshening up.

Reception is only open from 9.30am which is quite inconvenient when checking in/out early.

At over €400/night for family of 4, I will probably look elsewhere when visiting QDL next time.

The resort is set within the luxury avenues of Quinta do lago. Huge mansions, manicured lawns. It is quite breathtaking. A word of caution, there is a fair bit of construction work happening and we lost water on one morning for 3 hrs and another day the electricity went out for an hour. There is also a little bit of noise from 7am onwards but it is not too much. The roads often have temporary traffic lights. The resort was fairly quiet and not too much in the way of activities. Just a pool and a couple of tennis courts. We enjoyed the peaceful lake nearby but the beach is a fair way away and if you’re wet from the sea it’s a long way to lug everything back especially in the soaring heat. I’d probably not go back with teens as they would need a bit more energy and a local shop within walking distance would be better. A games room would have been ideal

My family came back to Quinta do Lago and this time stayed in Encosta do Lago via a private villa hire from Owners Direct.
Having stayed in both Quinta and Val do Lobo before we knew the area but not this resort. It works well for young families.
What we can say is that it is lovely, well kept, but very quiet (which for us was good).
We travelled with 3 children (6, 5 and 1) and found the pools the best part of the stay. The complex is predominantly privately owned, and much is not rented out and so there were only a smattering of occupied villas. This meant it was very quiet even in August (by Portuguese standards).
We found a few other families had booked direct with the complex, but they had a few gripes as there appeared very little staff on hand and the reception was barely manned. We never found it, as it was a small office near the edge of the development, but never needed it either.
Our private rental was cleaned regularly and was very well equipped. However the corkscrew was broken which meant we tried some novel ways to open wine one night.
Eating on site was ok, as the snack bar by the pool provided good service of drinks and light snacks all reasonably priced. The restaurant was practically empty most nights and is at the top end of Quinta prices.
The location is handy for the Quinta beach and lake, but we knew the Dunas Douradas beach in val do lobo is much better for kids (nicer sand, shallower slope to sea, and only 10 mins drive away).
So to all the reviews about the airport noise. Not sure what planet you stayed on. Being 20mins from Faro airport is very handy, and of course means you get planes landing and taking off. Think Central London aircraft noise given Heathrow is about the same distance away. Not oppressive, but then again were we used to it.
Would we go back, maybe. We liked Dunas Douradas Beach Club, but with kids of school age now, we are priced out. Defo a quiet family holiday with great pools, and especially if you want to do your own thing. Nice people by the pool, many with similar aged kids. Happy memories, and even better if you like playing tennis in 40C heat or standing in the small but well equipped gym pretending to work out, but watching Sky news.

Encosta Do Lago is a smart purpose built holiday estate comprising apartments and houses, some up to three stories. Villa 87, where we stayed last week, is a three bedroom, two storey villa, reached via about a dozen steps, then a path and a few more steps, where we had the ground floor and the upstairs was a separate apartment. It was good for us that the upstairs apartment was not occupied or we would have lost some valuable privacy in our private garden due to an overlooking balcony.

The villa, which I believe is similar to all others, is finished to a very high standard with stone floors, spacious attractive wardrobes, chic OKA type furnishings, comfortable beds, excellent ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning throughout. The kitchen had all major appliances and is modern but surprisingly had only bare essentials. We had to ask for a working cork screw, vegetable peeler and scissors, which were all delivered within a day or so (end of day 4 - more on that in a bit). It was surprising to us that so little kitchen cleaning kit was provided ie no scourer, dish brush, j-cloth, washing up liquid, just 2 dishwasher tablets. Usually, you get a bit of a starter kit. We had to buy the lot - and left most behind. Not what one usually expects. Also, no hair dryer to be found - but in fairness, I never thought to check in advance.

The garden was private with high, quite solid hedging and our villa had a lovely private pool. Not all villas do but if you can stretch to a pool, it's well worth it. Be prepared for gardeners to be at work quite often; they were at work with mowers and strimmers in our garden on 2 of the afternoons and you could often hear them at work elsewhere on other properties. We were quite relaxed about that - the gardens will not look so good without the attention.

The one thing we absolutely did not expect though, was the the aircraft noise. We did Google Earth check Encosta and I saw in advance the positioning of the Faro runways so telephoned the agent to check if aircraft noise was a problem. I was assured it was not a disturbance due to banking, which is not true. Whether you get disturbed or not depends on your tolerance to background noise. All I can say is I was not expecting to be able to see planes taking off so close to Encosta that you could see the airline livery. They start at 8am and sometimes 9am and on occasion I heard planes at 11pm. They do not fly by every day and not all day but definitely on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and occasionally in between and sometimes frequently at peak times. You could also see planes coming into land from the resort, towards the end of our stay and could see wheels were down! To be completely fair, lots of residents were unruffled by this, but if it's not your thing, at least you know about this now. I am going to post an Encosta Do Lago planes video on YouTube, so you can make up your own mind about the level of disturbance.

We didn't visit Tucanos, the restaurant on site but noted they also offer a take out. Starters are €3-5, mains up to €19.50 with puds about €4.50. Then you need to add on water, other drinks and alcohol. A can of Sprite/Coke at the pool bar is €3, sandwiches €3-4.50. Pretty good quality in our view.

Visitors also need to be aware (we were not) that in booking via various Internet companies, there is a high probability you will be booking not with Encosta Do Lago itself but with a private owner via an agency. This makes a big difference to your stay. Basically, only circa 25% of the accommodation is Encosta owned, the rest is privately owned. That means that Reception staff do not consider you their guests and are reserved about when they will help you. There was a definite coolness in their attitude to us. For instance, we knew in advance that internet access was only available in common areas including around the pool, however, the Reception staff absolutely refused to give us the internet codes for access to the internet around the large communal pool. As far as they were concerned we were staying in privately owned accomodation and internet access was the sole responsibility of the property owner. You can imagine our surprise, as we thought we had booked with Encosta. After a time, other guests gave us the Reception area code, so to gain access we had to sit in one of only 2 chairs in Reception or outside Reception hours on a wall outside. All highly unsatisfactory.

Also, be aware that Reception is unmanned at the weekend - something else we didn't know in advance. We arrived on Saturday morning on an early flight and Reception was closed until Monday morning. Our holiday rep answered text messages over the weekend but would not actually come and see us until Monday morning. That is why problems could not be corrected until day 3 or 4 (and regarding Internet access not at all). Our rep was very helpful from that point on but agreed that Encosta's behaviour was less than welcoming.

Overall, Encosta was fine for us once we chilled about the limited Internet access and tuned out the aircraft noise - and once we got our vegetable peeler!! We liked the concept, the quality of the accommodation and the weather was fabulous but next time, we'll move up the coast a bit more, away from the airport.

On a final note: top tip is only to use the local Supermacado for essentials. Within a 12-13 min drive you'll find both Aldi and Lidl.

We visit Quinta do Lago regularly and this time decided to try Encosta do Lago resort with private pool as kids love swimming all day long. The apartment was spacious, however, it was looking quite dated and past its best. There were some issues with our pool that could have been dealt with more adequate but overall it was all OK. There were also some other minor issues with housekeeping e.g. our welcome tray had some opened and half used jam jars on it! (We don't use jam, so we didn't really care about that but it clearly was a housekeeping oversight, and made us think what else might have been missed). The fresh bread rolls in the morning were a nice touch. Overall our stay was OK and the staff was nice enough. However, I'm not rushing back here, as personally I prefer the feel of some the other properties in Quinta do Lago.

We stayed in Encosta do Lago in May, and, as our 7 year old loved the pool so much, and the proximity to The Shack, we returned in July/August.

In May, the resort was very quiet, despite being half term. The pool rarely saw more than a dozen people around it, and the pool bar was closed, although the pool was very cold! The pool is a lovely freeform pool with lots of shallower areas for kids, but also plenty of deeper areas for swimming / diving / relaxing on inflatables.

In August, the pool bar was open, and the pool was, unsurprisingly warmer. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and double up in the Tucano's Restaurant in the evening. The gym is only 2 years old, nicely located overlooking the pool and has good equipment, and the health club area also has a steam room and sauna, as well as offering various treatments.

The resort was built in phases and some of the older apartments now look a bit dated (where we stayed in May), but the more recent phases are very nice and fully kitted out with modern kitchen appliances, cable TV, etc, although the wifi signal can be a bit variable in the apartment. It is fine around the pool though.

Encosta do Lago is a beautiful resort. The apartment we stayed in in October was large, airy clean and well maintained with a lovely sunny garden. It had everything you could possibly want from kitchen utensils to dishwasher, even it's own dedicated fast wifi - some of the other apartments seem to share the resort's wifi. The pool is fantastic with plenty of space, chairs and umbrellas. The gym looks brand new and has a wide range of equipment. The food at Tucano's restaurant was very good and the staff very friendly, particularly Carlos. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance but we had a car so ventured out to various places. Some reviews have mentioned aircraft noise - this is nonsense. Yes it is only a few miles from the airport (20 minute transfer) but there are not that many flights and they do not fly over the resort but you can see them in the distance. This is not a party resort but if you want to relax in luxurious surroundings this is the place for you.

Have just returned after a week stay. WE arrived early evening on a sunday to find thereception plus the only restaurant closed, there are no restaurants or shops including supermarkets for a good 40 minute walk.
During the day the pool bar was closed and to our amazement the pool and complex was empty we didnt see any one else around really for the weeK so you couldnt pop to the shop for a drink or an icecream for the children. The reception staff were helpful in ordering a taxi but nothing else as our apartment number 87 was privately owned we werent classed as their guests.
Also it is right in the flight path very noisy. And definately not a family resort.
The beach is also a good 30 min walk along a very rugged path not ideal for buggys.
The apartment was lovely although wasnt expecting the upstairs to be a seperate apartment so glad nobody was staying as our garden and pool privacy would have been totally spoilt.
A couple of big tips hire a car,and DO NOT GO HERE LATE SEPTEMBER.

With a football training camp for my sons booked last-minute, I needed to construct the rest of the holiday around it. What I hadn’t realised is that Quinta do Lago, where the camp was based, makes up one of the corners of the Algarve’s super-affluent Golden Triangle.

This is apparent when searching for accommodation, the prices of which are eye-watering in high season. I settled for Encosta do Lago. Although not cheap, they had a discounted two-bedroom apartment which looked nice. Oddly, the stated cancellation fee was over double what I was paying. This suggested someone forgot to amend it in line with the reduced price, so on the face of it I got a pretty good deal.

On the transfer from Faro airport, the endless mansions you pass are a shameless showcase of wealth, with grounds that look like they’ve been manicured with nail scissors. As we raced down avenues named after Formula 1 drivers, our musings about Beverly Hills and Hotel California made our driver smile (though I’m sure he’d heard it all before).

If such an environment sounds a bit sterile, have faith, because Quinta do Lago also boasts a wonderful nature reserve, with excellent cycling routes and birdwatching. In thirty glorious minutes from Encosta do Lago, you’ve cycled right up to the end of Faro airport’s runway, with the more authentic Faro Island (not a real island, but still remote-feeling) easily reachable. You can go surfing there (Surf School Faro is recommended). Or, as I did, send my sons surfing while I relaxed at the nearby Cais 73 on their roof terrace with a glass of vinho verde. Nice.

Back in Quinta do Lago, the advice is to hire a car, especially as the closest supermarket to Encosta do Lago is a ten-minute car ride away. To save a few euros, we hired bicycles, which made our initial supermarket forées somewhat precarious. However, after a while, I felt rather superior to those other tourists, trapped in their air-conned cocoons.

Although quite late at night, our arrival at Encosta do Lago was effortless. The security guard was ready with an envelope containing our key, leisure passes and welcome pack. He took to his caddy and guided our driver to our apartment.

Which was, to say the least, like ‘wow’.

You enter into a hall that’s almost a room in itself, off which emanate the main rooms.

One of these is the kitchen, fitted with all major appliances, as well as a capsule coffee machine and toaster. The only thing missing was a corkscrew. This is a deal-breaker in Portugal, as not many of their wines are screw-top. However, ten minutes after I mentioned this omission to the concierge, one was delivered. (Another welcome delivery is fresh bread and cakes, which Housekeeping drop by in a wicker basket every morning except Sunday.)

Wander into the lounge, and you just want to relax. When it gets too hot on the balcony (more about that in a mo’), the lounge is always just right. Both Sky TV and aircon are piped-in, so switch them on, and chill.

Both bedrooms are master-sized, sporting ample wardrobe space and safes. But the intended master bedroom leads to a larger ensuite bathroom, which offers you the additional choice of bathing and jacuzzi-ing, as well as showering.

Like the lounge, this main bedroom also boasts access to the apartment’s balcony, a space which deserves a special mention. It wraps around the entire rear aspect of the apartment, with part of the balcony in shade and part in sun, giving you a choice of sunbathing options.

Further praise has to go to the excellent concierge service. So helpful, friendly and attentive. For instance, they proactively made calls to the surf school and bike hire company on my behalf, to ensure there were no misunderstandings.

Encosta is largely a residential complex, and best-suited to self-catering holidays. There is no town centre or strip close by, and only a handful of restaurants within walking distance. The Shack is not bad, child-friendly and beautifully located next to a watersports centre – it’s a right turn out of the resort, then a five-minute walk.

Many of the resort properties have their own pools, and there is also a sizable communal one. When we were there this was pretty underused, so no problems getting sunloungers (use the blue towels from your apartment). Alongside the pool is a gym which we didn’t use and the resort’s own restaurant, Tucano’s. We ate there on our first night as it was our only late-night option, but subsequently opted to use it for aperitifs and sundowners only. Nothing particularly wrong with it, but too pricey for my liking, and was very quiet.

We really loved our stay at Encosta do Lago. Everything was just right. I’m not going to pretend Quinta do Lago is everyone’s cup of tea. Its excess reminds me of the Joe Walsh song ‘Malibu’. But look beyond, and you’ll find it’s beautifully counterpointed by the natural, the wild and the authentic.

Just like the real Beverly Hills.

Very spacious and well appointed apartment. Comfortable beds and King Size in the master room. Molton Brown toiletries. Fresh Bread delivered every morning. Pool quite cold even in the summer. Not enough sun beds for the resort. Too many guests reserved them for the whole day when only spending a few hours there in the afternoon. The bar and lunch menu were reasonable and Tucano's for an evening meal was very good with a great selection of dishes. A long walk to the beach, but worth it. Lake was fun and could hire pedalos and boats. One complaint - noisy dog that barked most of the day until the owner returned home. A car is needed to travel to supermarket / shops / golf courses etc...
