If you are a bit needy then perhaps look for a bigger place with air con, higher prices and a higher star rating, but if you want to experience a beautiful slice of Provencal life then look no further than the Hotel La Fontaine in Saint Martin de Bromes. Dinner on the raised terrace looking out over the wooded hills. Breakfast in the courtyard with the sound of the natural source fountain as background ambiance. Take your pick. "We speak your language" is the claim. That might be a bit of an exaggeration if your native tongue is English. But my basic school French and the staff happy to try out their school English equivalent and we managed to get by quite well. And I have to say that the staff were all really friendly, as were the local villagers who would call by each day to drink from the lovely cool waters flowing from deep underground and out of the fountain, as they went to the local shop next door for their bread and produce. There is free parking directly accessed from the main road, without having to drive into the heart of the village with its steep and really narrow streets, as we did when we first arrived at about 11pm and there was hardly a person to be found. Finally a kind lady guided us through the small paved streets on foot to the hotel where we checked in before setting off again in search of our car to bring it to the car park. 2 or was it 4 cooling beers later and that experience was just one of the many memories of our couple of days in Provence. I'm not too sure exactly where the author of A year in Provence lived, but after my time at the Hotel La Fontaine in Saint Martin de Bromes, I can see why they didn't go home. The village is also ideally located for access to the surrounding countryside of the Verdon Natural Regional Park and the Valensole Plateau. Day 1 we drove through the lavender fields to the roads high above the Verdon Gorge and the Lac de Sainte-Croix. Then day two we headed West to Apt and some of the the small towns dotted around the hills of the Luberon. A wonderful experience all in all.

Decisamente consigliato. Family-owned hotel in the small lovely Saint Martin des Bromes village, close to Valensole. Hotel la Fontaine was my only option when walking the GR4 through the Verdon Gorges in March since the local gite wasn't open. It proved a reasonable overnight stop once I'd actually got in. There was no sign of anybody when I arrived at 5pm and I had to call the hotel on my mobile (not the first time this has happened in a small village - always make sure you have all the contact numbers for your accommodation!). My room was clean, warm and comfortable. Toilets and showers are shared - hence the lower prices; rooms have washing facilities. The evening meal was a 'formule' menu of four courses - tasty veg tart, hake in wine/cream sauce with spinach, good cheese board, ice cream. Breakfast is self-service buffet available for 7 am - fruit, yoghurt, croissants and pains chocolats, jam, fruit juice, hot drinks. The hotel did its job at a reasonable price.
