The pros: The rooms themselves are a 10! Spotless clean, totally renovated, spacious, fully stocked with kitchen supplies, washer/dryer etc. The staff was also pleasant and the grounds were nicely maintained (we saw groundskeepers out early every morning taking care of the landscaping). Food is very good at the restaurant on-site (sometimes we ate there - it’s outside but breezy and tables had umbrellas, the wait staff/ bartenders were always friendly and helpful! On other nights we brought food up to our room). The beach was great …private , never crowded , had lounge chairs /umbrellas , moderate waves, could easily walk from one side to the other …perfect for kids !! The pool was also spacious but we preferred to use it in the morning when no one was there as it tended to get very crowded in the afternoons. We never had a problem finding lounge chairs which were spaced out. The staff was also constantly sanitizing them when people left.

The cons: We spent a week here and as others said, sort of felt a little trapped without renting a car. There is one restaurant onsite which as stated above, was good but not enough variety to eat every meal for 7 nights. The restaurant is independently owned and operated so you couldn’t charge to your room and there was no pool service/ waiter coming around for drinks. The front desk seemed confused on which restaurants delivered and also weren’t sure which restaurants were open/ where they were located. It was frustrating because , if they don’t know …how are we supposed to know ?? Thankfully one of the other guests at the hotel assisted us with the equivalent to Uber Eats or Door Dash…”Dame un bite”. Once we had that we were at least able to order different food and have it delivered to our hotel!

There are no taxis …there’s only one car service company and its $25 each way to go local distances (to the grocery store, local restaurant etc) , $85-95 each way to San Juan and even more to to go to the rainforest. We used it once to go to the grocery store but didn’t want to use it to go out to eat because no one was able to recommend a restaurant and we didn’t want to be stranded somewhere with no taxi back.

Finally, there is an activity center (closed for COVID which is fine) with a weekly activity calendar that takes place outside. I have been to many places with these amenities …and this one was a mess. While the staff was very friendly, the events / crafts were never on time. The crafts for kids also seemed to be planned on the spot. It was very difficult to see the kids waiting “patiently” for something to happen. I felt like the events for the day should have been planned in advance. They had popsicles every day at 12 which was really whatever time the event staff remembered to bring them out. While the events are a good idea…they could really use better planning!!

Overall we had a great week enjoying the pool, the beach, family time and a comfy room!! The hotel would benefit from a concierge/ more knowledgeable staff and a better (less expensive) way for customers to get around !!

My wife and I stayed here 7 years ago and twice this December.
We had a top floor studio with King-size bed and large covered balcony, overlooking the pool and beach. The hotel staff had warned us about construction noise from a hotel next door being demolished. We never heard any noise during our 6 day stay. We could sleep with the balcony door open and the sound of the crashing waves.
The large pool and 2 whirlpools are kept spotless and we saw pool attendants and gardeners at work every day.
The service was great and requested items were delivered to our room promptly.
The onsite Mahi Mahi restaurant serves tasty dishes at normal prices. There is not much protection from the frequent tropical brief showers at the outdoor restaurant, but we enjoyed our meals on our covered balcony.
All staff members were super friendly and very helpful. The resort is beautiful and was pretty empty in early December. We had pool and whirlpool pretty much to ourselves. We stayed one night at another resort in Dorado, checked out the next morning and went back to the Hyatt Residence Club for another 3 nights.

We recently came back from a 4 night stay at this property. Our requirements were for a full kitchen, and we booked a 1 bedroom suite on friend's recommendations who were at the HRCHDM several weeks before. The experience exceeded our expectations!

The property is located around 45 minutes from SJU, and check in was quick and easy. As other reviews have mentioned, this is a time share property, not a full service hotel, hence you have to grab a cart yourself (carts were plentiful) and bring your luggage to your room yourself. Also, there is no housekeeping, but fresh towels and linens are always available upon request. The suite was modern and up to date, with a fully equipped kitchen and modern stainless appliances. The bed was comfortable and storage was plentiful. The bathroom was huge, with 2 sinks and a large shower. Closet was a bit small. There is a full dining room table with room for 4-6 people, a cough and 2 chairs. There was a large screen TV in both the bedroom and living room. The balcony had a table and 4 chairs, and we enjoyed our morning coffee and evening wine sitting and admiring the beautiful view.

The beach is beautiful with plenty of chairs available. One day attendants came around with ice pops for all. Surf is a bit rough at times. Pool area is also beautiful, surrounded by palm trees, with 2 hot tubs and a kiddy pool.

A car is mandatory if you plan on grocery shopping, or venturing off the property. Nearby (5 minute drive) is Cerro Gordo, which had a beautiful trail along the water. We drove to San Juan one afternoon for a tour of Old San Juan, and one night we drove 30 minutes to the casino in Bayamon.

We found the staff friendly and responsive to our needs. A special shout out to Marilu, the front desk manager who accommodated our need to stay a bit later the day of check out because of a late flight back. Also thank you to Natalie (from Jerome Avenue in the Bronx!) who also helped us out.

Overall, a great place to stay for a short getaway. We hope to be back!

P.S.: The old Cerromar hotel next door is being demolished. We heard some noise from the demolition, but that did not diminish our enjoyment of our stay

We haven’t been here in a few years due to hurricanes & increased airfares. The property’s biggest difficulty right now is the monstrous eyesore on the adjacent property to the East. This adandoned, dilapidated and only somewhat cleaned-up, very large building (much larger than the Hyatt buildings/grounds) is just a terrible eyesore, complicating what would otherwise be a gorgeous Caribbean view.

CoV2 has also hamstringed the potential of this lovely property, as their is still no alcohol being served in Mahi Mahi bar & grill poolside at the beach here. We’ve been here many times before when Mahi Mahi is all-the-way open for food & drink, and it really adds a lot to consideration of staying at the resort 24/7 while here.

We’re staying on the 7th floor, and our room has been completely refurbished and everything is clean, new, tastefully decorated and definitely along the spectrum of the many other Hyatt vacation clubs we visit.

Dear DJsnorkeler: Thank you for taking the time to review our beautiful resort in Dorado, Puerto Rico. We are very excited that we opened on December 19, 2020 after three years of closure after hurricane Maria. The property next door is being demolished as you pointed out and are very glad to see that progress is being made so that we sill not have the eyesore in the near future. On another good note, the Government of Puerto Rico finally gave the permit to Mahi-Mahi Bar and Grill for the sale of alcoholic beverages. Thank you for your comments about our beautiful brand new rooms, I agree with you, they are very tastefully decorated. We hope to see you you again in your next travel to Puerto Rico.

This was our fifth, or maybe sixth, stay at The Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar, and our first since the hurricane that closed it for 3+ years. They have done a great job restoring the buildings and property which the hurricane destroyed. Our corner unit on the fourth floor of building 5 provided a great view of the ocean and the pools. We took another couple with us. This was their first visit to Puerto Rico and, like us, they fully enjoyed the week.
Our fully equipped two bedroom unit was perfect! We loved the porch, but we spent most of our waking hours at the pool or the beach. Our only complaint was that the mattress was softer than we prefer, but that’s a personal matter. We did rearrange the kitchen just a bit. The coffee maker had been placed under a cabinet making it impossible to open. We switched the coffee maker with the toaster and the problem was solved.
The beach and pools are well maintained with ample chairs, tables, and loungers. Freeze pops are served poolside at 11:30 A.M. and they’re not just for kids!
Nice tennis courts are on property and a variety of low-key activities are provided.
We had been “warned” by a phone call in advance of our visit that the property next door was in the process of being torn down and that it might be noisy. Rather than being disturbed by the noise, we were fascinated by the work. We were also told in advance that there would be no housekeeping during the week, but towels and other supplies would be readily available.
The entire staff is friendly and helpful.
We find it helpful to have a rental car while staying at this property. Having a car provides access to the local grocery store, area restaurants, and some of the interesting things to do and see in Puerto Rico. We usually take the 8 minute ferry ride from Catano to Old San Juan, but it was not running this season. It has been replaced by a 45 minute bus ride @ .50, same price as the ferry. We missed not going into Old San Juan, but not enough to drive into the city.
There is an outdoor restaurant/bar on the property which we heard good things about, but we prefer to do our own cooking and visit some of the local restaurants.
We highly recommend The Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar. We will return!

I wanna say there was a lot of planning that went into this trip as we had stayed 7 days previously in Rincon. We were married in Rincon so Puerto Rico holds a special place in our hearts. I had gone back and forth between Hyatt Residence & Regency. The Residence property has construction going on next door as the area is still recovering from the Hurricane. So if your looking for an over all aesthetics not for you. The rooms are remodeled & property is modestly maintained. Rooms have a structural flare that need to be addressed, we could hear a family party that turned into a fight one night. The units share vents and it’s like there’s a microphone in the room below or above. When I brought it to Marilous (manager) attention she was ambivalent about our concern and didn’t seem moved in any way. I then asked a second manager for a late check out for our departure and again was met with “sorry 11 is the latest”, no options for paying nothing. I was beyond disappointed as when I made my initial reservation I let the person who answered that we would be celebrating our anniversary and the my assured me they would make sure it was special, I expected a special room, something. I even asked if I could pay to upgrade to a higher room again Marilou was unmoved by my request. It wasn’t until I spoke to Steven night before we departed and aired my concerns, he was so understanding and gave me options for late check out as we were going horseback riding and needed a little extra time. He not only understood he had a nice bottle of wine delivered with a beautiful note! That’s all it took how difficult was that?! Hyatt let Steven train your staff, he understands customer service!

This property is supposed to be one of Hyatt’s high end properties, I would beg to differ. It is more of a locals staycation property. They rent rooms to have weekend parties and get aways. Awesome, just not the experience I was looking for.

Also there needs to be more attention to common spaces. Hall ways/ breezeways could use extra attention.

Beautiful brand new gym! Loved that…you do have to ask for lights, fans to be turned on as there are no controls in the gym.

Staff is accommodating overall. The room and kitchen amenities are a huge plus when you are staying long term like us. Also there is a shared washer/. Dryer with the two units. Loved that.

There are a lot of kids in pool and at times they are being fed in pool. Not the business. There is security to enforce rules but I didn’t see that happening.

Overall we were comfortable but probably would not return. It was not worth the price we paid.

Everyone went the extra mile for our peculiar requests. Luis from the restaurant at the beach treated us like family, very attentive and personable, too!
Aaron, we gave him the titles “popsicle manager” and “volleyball referee” was great to talk to. He made our stay more fun for sure.
The front desk staff let us borrow Christmas ornaments so that we could decorate a palm tree and have our own family Christmas away from home. They went to the back of the office and offered us as many ornaments we wished. We only needed 4, but they were so excited with us and wanted to be a part of it.
The front desk manager Eric checked in with us to make sure our laundry was done to our satisfaction, because there was a short power outage and he knew that we needed to check out timely.
Wow! Everyone was making our stay so memorable and sacrificed their own Christmas to make ours so wonderful!
Thank you - Muchas Gracias!

Let’s start with this stay was as Hyatt Residence Club members. Get comfortable. After calling to inform/confirm we’d be arriving a day later (and eat the cost) and late night, we arrive in a $160 Uber ride from airport to the location which is extremely remote, at 1am, only to be refused entrance by security. We were marked as a no show, and given no name, number, or assistance from anyone in resolving the issue. Every Hyatt number online was “closed.” On top of that, being that it was the middle of the night during spring break, none of the very few neighboring hotels would take us. After calling around to about 10 hotels, we were forced to spend $250 to return back to San Juan and pay about $260 to stay in a crap airport hotel. Yup. Consider yourselves warned if you plan to arrive late night or alter your reservation. This is beyond UNACCEPTABLE and an atrocious way to manage reservations. We will NEVER stay in a Hyatt again.

While the municipality of Dorado is beautiful and so is this location, that's about where we start and stop this review.

The staff at the hotel are genuinely kind and polite but don't expect them to bend over backwards for top tier World Of Hyatt (WOH) members like they do at other Hyatt properties on island. Forget about all the perks associated with being a member, they do not care or seem to exist, almost as if they didn't know what it was. No late check out, no upgrades, the restaurant is not owned by Hyatt so forget that perk too. If you are expecting a world class Hyatt experience, probably not here. Such a shame as this is a beautiful property. If you book direct through Hyatt you may be misled by information that is posted there like we were. When we called Hyatt to let them know, they were dumbfounded and had documentation stating to the contrary. Needless to say, the hotel trumped Hyatt while we were on property.

Now if you are an average hotel traveler, this is a great place. When there is no expectation, the experience is amazing. However, there are drawbacks even to that. The former hotel next door is still being demolished, going on 10 months now. I know because we had to stay here in February 2021. This can easily be overlooked by the beauty of the grounds. The rooms are updated and should be fully operational. A/C is set to 68 - you can't change it and the hot water hovers around 85 degrees. When we were here earlier in 2021, I had to play maintenance man and fix a few minor toilet and tub issues which was easy for me, I also didn't mind as they were just rebooting from the Hurricane and Covid shutdowns. The hotel appreciated that gesture then but I was also not expecting anything during our stay, then a bottle of wine was left in the room. That gesture alone was why we chose to come back here this time and spend our second half of our trip this time here.

Knowing now what we experienced here this time after coming from the other Hyatt resort, sadly we will not be back. Call me pretentious but when you earn your loyalty credits, something should be said for being able to cash in on them.

The average traveller and family would love it just not this Globalist.

As an owner of a timeshare for over 20 hrs I have never experienced such horrible treatment. For several days we sat at the kiddie pool so we could watch my niece. The security officer on duty Wednesday May 12 was terrible to my family and I, he was antagonizing and very disrespectful. He walked around trying to intimidate us due to us having a two cups of juice by the pool. Then my son has his phone on with his music very low and he came over again to tell us no, basically anything we did he would come over and say NO. When on vacation it’s truly uncomfortable to have someone wearing a huge security jacket walking only around your area as if your in prison. When I went to the front desk to tell the manager she was not helpful and dismissive. I truly am disgusted and will not return to this hotel, as an owner I feel completely taken advantage of with dues and maintenance fees at the rate I pay to be treated this way. Not only was he rude but was laughing in my face when I said I was going to speak to the manager. I’m trying to change my ticket to go home this has been the worst vacation ever! The massive whole I woke up to everyday and the fact there is nothing to do after 8 pm made it so that it wasn’t enjoyable. If you can stay somewhere else do it this property needs better service and staff.
