I brought my mum here for afternoon tea last year for a lovely autumn themed afternoon tea. I loved the service and the afternoon tea so much I decided to book it for the following year for my baby shower. The communication was really good via e mail and phone calls. I had to pay a bit extra to book out a room in order to put up decorations and play games, which was fine as it was still slightly cheaper than other venues I’d priced. We had the east wing room . There were 16 adults and 4 children attending. The afternoon tea was beautiful. It was their Christmas themed one. All cakes were home made on site and there were sandwiches, potato wedges and the most amazing ever warm quiche with cranberries. All dietary requirements were catered for (there were several) and individual plates made where there were several allergies. There was a choice of teas and coffees a the waiting on staff kept on coming back to check if we needed more and keep us topped up. Lots of people said it was the nicest afternoon tea they’d ever had. The only thing missing was a bit of background music, but other than that everything was spot on. Thank you so much The Sweeney Hall. A memory I’ll cherish for ever. Look forward to coming back and bringing my baby girl for an afternoon tea in mat leave perhaps 🩷

Lovely hotel, the entrance to the property was amazing through a long drive to the beautiful entrance. The grounds were beautiful, dining pods, gin shacks and beautiful covered terrace area.
We were met by a young man who greeted us and went for the room key as there is strangely no actual reception as far as we could see, he also offered us assistance with our luggage which was not required, we made a booking for dinner that evening no problem.
Room 10 was lovely with views to the back of the property, the room was very tastefully decorated with a cast iron double bed which was a little small, it had lovely crisp linen and a beautiful bathroom with bath and over shower with lovely toiletries and lots of storage. T&C in the room which was nice. One concern was the wardrobe was not secured to the wall, it looked like a period price so that could be why?
One other criticism would be the hall lighting, it shone through the door so had to put a towel at the base of the door as I like a dark room… maybe put invest in sensors on the lights like they have in other parts of the building, could save the hotel energy costs too?
Dinner was very good value, we choose the 2 course menu which had lots of choice and was really lovely, food piping hot with great service, very attentive staff and we chose a very nice reasonably priced Prosecco too.
Breakfast on the first day was fantastic, service and food quality were top notch could not fault it. The breakfast service on the 2nd day was a poor let down, food we felt was not as good as previous day and had to hunt down a cleaner to try and get toast which we ordered with the breakfast which was a shame as it let the hotel down.
Check out was disappointing as no staff were about to see if we had enjoyed our stay and take our key, we sort of felt like we were slinking out of the hotel 🤣 not leaving as paying guests.
I would definitely come back to the hotel and have no hesitation in recommending to family and friends.

Thank you so much for this lovely review. I am so plead to read that you enjoyed your stay in room 10 . I will pass on all your kind comments to the staff and to the chef. In answer to your comment regarding the light coming in from the hall, we have looked into sensor lights in this area but there is no way of being able to fit them we have been told but I will look into perhaps adding strips at the bottom of the doors to reduce light flow. Reviews like yours are a breath of fresh air for a business, it is so lovely to read the many positives of your stay and I absolutely take on board the comments regarding the breakfast and the check out but it is so refreshing to have a reviewer that delivers these comments without annihilating a business in the process and gives us an incredibly favourable overall mark. Thank you so much for reviewing as I feel a reviewer should and we hope to see you here at the Sweeney again in the future - kindest regards Kara (owner)

Went for afternoon tea with a group of ladies, really tasty food, excellent value for money in lovely surroundings. There was a selection of sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, multiple cakes plus quiche and wedges a lovely surprise and they were tasty. Lots of tea and coffee and the service was excellent too, can’t fault it for the price, at £20 a head it’s one of the best afternoon teas I’ve had. Will definitely be back for more.

The Sweeney has always been our go to restaurant where we could guarantee a good meal. The meal we had last night was very poor. The starter ordered was Camembert and focaccia. It arrived minus the Camembert. When we queried the omission, we opted to have it with our main course - pork chop, potatoes dauphinois with apple fritter. The pork chop was substantial and should have included a steak knife to make cutting easier. The dauphinois was tasteless, barely warm with significant parts of it almost raw potato. The Camembert was also barely warm. No one came to check on how our meal was.
We also went to the Sweeney for lunch some weeks ago and found the menu to be such that we didn’t understand quite a bit of it and what we did understand we didn’t find appealing. My husband opted for the fish and chips which was the only thing on the menu he found palatable. We noticed that almost everyone else there that day had also chosen fish and chips. Some of the items on the menu as like last night were not only unpronounceable, but also not understandable. What is the Sweeney now hoping to achieve? It certainly isn’t us, and having spoken to a couple of acquaintances this morning who had a less than generous view of the menu, we, like they, will not be returning.

Thank you for your review of your meal at the Sweeney. My apologies regarding the camembert, I believe that the manager on duty that night did come to apologise and explain what had happened, again he also brought you a steak knife as soon as you asked for one. I will speak to the chef regarding the dauphinois and the warm camembert - apologies for this also. Thank you also for your comments regarding our menu. We try to appeal to all not a select few and I'm at a loss when looking at our menu, to fathom what you could not understand, on our starters for example, we have sweet potato fritter, also soup, pate, scotch egg, baked fish gratin, smoked mackerel, non of which are out of the ordinary and anything that might be deemed "different" such as the thai fish bonbons have an explanation underneath. The same applies to our main courses, steak, pork chop, burger, pie, salmon, trout, fish and chips, autumn salad, dhal trout - again all with explanations of what is part of the dish underneath. I was also glad to read that we were your go to restaurant but in looking through your reviews I can't seem to find a review where you say you enjoyed your meals here, only this one damming us for the one time you have not enjoyed your meal but that's fine. We are a small local business, not a big commercial enterprise and as I said before this means that we try to appeal to all and I'm sorry to read that you felt you had to discuss us with others and cast aspersions about the Sweeney but again that is fine and your prerogative as it is also your prerogative not to return here. The manager apologised on the evening and I have also apologised again but it is a bitter pill to swallow that after so many, we presume, good meals here you have one a that did not meet your expectations and rather than call us you choose to write a scathing review on an open forum - kind regards Kara (Owner)

We arrived at the hotel round about 12 noon with the idea of checking if lunch was available. Yes it was, so we decided to take lunch at the hotel which was really enjoyable. This was taken outside on the patio under a giant umbrella. Whilst sitting there we did mention that we had booked two rooms for the evening and Sean, the owner, kindly brought our keys to the table, which meant that we could move in earlier than expected.

Lunch was most enjoyable, particularly the home made pies which the men appreciated.
Our room was very nicely appointed with a super view across fields. There were two large bottles of water together with a selection of teas and coffees. The bathroom had a shower and we were supplied with the usual toiletries. My only observation was the lighting over the sink. There appeared to be a light above the sink but I could not detect any switch.

Breakfast was in an oblong room and we were asked to sit at a table where there was no view at all - only a wall to look at. We asked if we could move to a table with a view and were told it was set for dinner and would cause a problem! In the end we moved the cutlery ourselves and replaced it with breakfast items. There was fresh fruit available and small pastries. The cooked breakfast itself was very nicely presented and in actual fact the portion was too large for me to manage!

Next year we hope to visit the Eisteddfod in Llangollen and to return to the Sweeney Hotel.

After years of top quality service we decided to book Sweeney for our daughter's 40th birthday celebration with family and friends. I regret to say our experience fell well short of any quality that this hotel has previously offered . We reserved a table 2 weeks in advance and confirmed numbers and food options 5 days beforehand. 2 people added to the guest list and emailed their requirements which included gluten free items , a confirmation email was received. We added one extra on the night , phoning ahead and this was confirmed as not a problem. So far so good
The evening began well as we took our seats in advance of the 7.30 booking , only to wait until 7.45 for the first courses to appear when youngsters wearing plain black t shirts (hardly good waiting on apparel ) crept in . The next issue came when one starter was missing, I'm going to say it was because of our late addition which "isn't a problem " from the phone call . We finished up and sat with our plates for 40 minutes before they were removed . Main courses eventually arrived only to discover the gluten free option was not available and had to be replaced with a chicken breast . In the main the food rated good to acceptable apart from 3 chewy sirloin steaks and a child's sausage meal which was inedible. The girls and boys in black t shirts once again cleared up and sweet menus came out , unfortunately too late for 2 guests who had to leave at 9 . Next issue arose when girl tells our guest the pre ordered and confirmed gluten free brownie was not available...upset 9 year old . Alternative ice cream ordered reminding manager and staff this must be gluten free ....comes with a wafer on top !!! Requested manager , and Christian came through. His handling of our situation was poor , making excuses of being busy on Friday and a party of 100 being in . It was made clear that in taking bookings you ensure that kitchen and staff can manage and the gluten free situation was intolerable . A 50% discount was accepted, but, the disappointment will remain for a long time.

Thank you for your review of your experience at the Sweeney. I can only apologise for the issues you experienced on the night hence the Manager giving you a 50% discount on your entire bill that night. Regarding the issue with gluten free brownie, it does appear that from your emil with food requirement that the person writing had stated gluten free chicken nuggets OR chicken breast and gluten free brownie OR ice-cream as the options. I apologise for the wafer being placed on the ice-cream, this was an error on the part of the pudding chef, I might add that the wafer is not part of or mixed through with the ice-cream. The steaks, had you mentioned this to us at the time we would have happily changed the steaks and although we cook them, unfortunately the chewiness is down to the producer and we will speak to our supplier. We chose to seat you earlier so your party could enjoy more time together but it seems that this decision may have made it feel that your wait was longer, a decision that perhaps we should not have made and again I apologise. We were busy that night and were two staff down due to illness, I accept that this is no excuse but perhaps may go someway to explaining why the staff were so busy both in the kitchen and the front of house. Thank you for saying that perviously you have had years of top quality service from us and its a shame that the one time we fall short you feel the need to leave a review. Once again, my apologies for the issues you had that evening. regards Kara

We meet on a monthly basis at this venue and whilst previously our meals have been acceptable the one we were served with at the end of March was at best descibed as atrocious. The starter of pate and toast was served without butter which came only when requested. The main course was indescribable. A chicken dish served plated which was just a mush. When asked where the vegetables were, was told there were none. Desert was reasonable. To sum up I expect a great deal more for the ÂŁ40 we were charged for this unpaleable meal. I will not be planning to return.

Thank you for your one start review. Firstly you pay ÂŁ35 not ÂŁ40 for, not only a three course meal, but a gin and tonic on arrival and a quarter of a bottle of wine, if you are paying an extra ÂŁ5 this is not being paid to us and we know nothing about it. Secondly our pate is made with copious amounts of butter and we have never served butter with our pate but as you point out in your review, when you asked for butter it was provided by the servers that you have also given a 1 star review. The chicken dish is served plated as are all our dishes, is served with polenta (a dish of mashed cornmeal) and sweetcorn, both of which are the vegetables for this dish, should you have wished for more vegetables these would have been at an additional cost to the ÂŁ35 per head that you spend for your three course meal, wine and a gin and tonic and we would have been happy to provide these for you. Criticism, when constructive, is always welcome but when we receive a review which does not entirely give the full picture we must avail ourselves of our right to reply. As you say in your review you have been coming here monthly on a regular basis, surely then a phone call to the management who, after all these visits, you must know by now, would have been a more pleasant way to voice your opinions rather than on a public forum. Should you not wish to return that is your prerogative. kind regards Kara Kynaston-Evans

My wife, Kim, and I had afternoon tea to celebrate our 36th Wedding Anniversary.
The Sweeney, a Georgian Country House, is set in parkland and has been refurbished and tastefully decorated.
We were served and waited on by one of the owners' sons and Maddie. Both were polite and charming, but it was Maddie who addressed our every need and her service was exemplary.
The 8 sandwiches each were generously filled and the cakes, scones, cream and jam were delicious. We had a lovely time and I would highly recommend this venue.

I stayed here on my way to work in our Oswestry office. It was nice to stay in the lovely grounds. I also ate here.

Stay: I stayed in room 12 a nice double room with a bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well. The shower was fun and I played a game of wash my hair when the water went from boiling to freezing - I am used to older houses so actually I was fine with it. I could not turn the hot water tap on - just stuck I think but I did not stress.

Staff were friendly and check out was easy and all on line.

Food: I really enjoyed my dinner and the staff were efficient and friendly.

Breakfast was also lovely and plenty of it so very happy there.

A lovely setting and the garden looked lovely and nice in the summer I would imagine.

We arrived at the hotel at 2.45 and searched for reception. Unable to find this we found a member of staff and were informed that the manager liked to sign guests in after 3:30 despite the reservation stating sign in from 3:00.
We returned after 3:30 again stopped a member of staff and were given a room key we had to ask where the room was and were told they are all upstairs. No welcome, no information about meal times or reservation for dinner. There was no covid check what so ever.
The room number 7 was spacious but need some repairs. the sash window cord was broken and a piece of wood was being used to prop it open. Fortunately I am strong enough to lift the sash and adjust the wood to different heights.
The bathroom taps were very stiff and either dribbled out or came on with a rush, my wife found this out by getting soaked. This problem was mentioned in a review 2 years ago. There was no information in the room and I had to find a member of staff to get the wifi password.
The food at dinner was very good on both nights and the service was fine.
Breakfast was a different experience.
We found a table and were asked what we wanted, there was no offer of what was available until we asked. When we pointed out that the fruit bowl was empty the reply was 'it isn't, nobody has had any'. It was refilled soon after. The food when it arrived was tasty with good ingredients but presentation left something to be desired, no side plate or knife for the toast.
The second morning was a little better but again small things let it down, no spoon with the boiled eggs, one small pat of butter for the toast for 2 people and one portion of marmalade between the two of us, there was a pot of jam as well.
I was surprised when checking my emails on the first morning that payment had been taken from my credit card for the first night and dinner without notice or a breakdown of the charge. The second morning the same thing happened, an email did arrive later with 2 items on it, room and food no details of what had been charged for.
Would I call again, yes for the food but no for the hotel unless the service improved.

Thank you so much for your review although it seems to be rather a mixed bag. We are pleased to hear the you enjoyed the food for the most part and would return to eat here again. With regard to the hotel, we carry out maintenance at the hotel on a regular basis, scrolling through past reviews to see if anyone else has commented regarding a problem over two years ago does not mean that this has not occurred in the past but should show that we rectified this problem and it has not been a problem for over two years but non the less thank you for bringing it to our attention. You mention no information in the rooms, we are still following government guidelines where we were told to remove anything but the very basics from a room and this included information packs which we have always placed in a room until we were told not to - the same goes for menus at breakfast - guidelines stated that where we could possibley do without menus we were to. I'm not sure what you are referring to regarding covid checks? We have QR codes on display both inside and outside the hotel should you wish to check in but its not a requirement by us or by law, a plethora of hand sanitiser stations all across the hotel and its grounds. We do not mandate masks but should you wish to wear one that is entirely up to you. Since July 17th most covid restrictions have been lifted in the UK some we have taken upon ourselves to keep in place such as the QR codes and less touch points in rooms like the information packs. This is also why we now operate a email system for check out - covid friendly - so there is less interaction for guests checking out, this seems to work well for our customers and your email should have quite clearly shown a break down of accommodation and food and drink. I am at a loss to know why your payment was taken in two parts - this is either a glitch in the system or perhaps you extended your stay and the system saw it as two separate nights or the email was a break down of you first night - for this I apologise and will look into it. With regard to the staff, many of our staff are new or have been away from the job for a very long time during lockdown and as its been noted in the press, hospitality is having a very hard time finding staff so those that are here are working sometime double hours, although this is no excuse it may go some way towards explaining why after a long evening they may not be quite on the ball at breakfast but I will speak to whoever was on duty during your stay. Regards Kara
