Kaliandra is a magical place where you can see Javanese culture in its best and most grandeur. The resort has combined the old Javanese architecture with the colonial-style interior. It is the place where Javanese royalty meets the 21st-century convenience. The resort consists of vast areas for organic farming, organic beauty spa and beautiful scenery of mount Arjuna outside of your window.

All food on the table tasted super fresh because they were organic plants taken straight from the land. The air quality is excellent for people who want to rejuvenate their health, and if you like photography like me, the sites of the mansion and the landscape are truly breathtaking. They have different areas which are suitable for Fine art pictures and even weddings. Kaliandra truly is a rare place where you can find the wholistic aspect of Javanese way of life.

I have just returned from a month long trip to Indonesia with my 13 yr old son, and early on we spent a week at Kaliandra. Although we stayed in other equally beautiful places on Java and other islands, Kaliandra was unlike anywhere else because of its underlying ethos: your stay there is making a contribution to an organisation which exists not solely for the benefit of its owners and visitors, but which is implementing many initiatives to help the local community, from large-scale organic market gardens, to tree planting, to the education and development of the staff who work there. This makes it different and gives it a kind of heart not so apparent elsewhere. There is genuine contact and interaction with the people there, who are keen to share their knowledge of Javanese culture and their enthusiasm for the Kaliandra project.
The accommodation is very comfortable and is spread over the hillside amongst lush, well-maintained tropical gardens, and there is a broad range of activities: from the best safari / wildlife park I have ever visited which is only 15 mins away, to a strenuous hike up Mt Arjuna to a remarkable sacred shrine, to a midnight drive to see the sunrise over Mount Bromo followed by the wildest, most thrilling white-water rafting, to the best massage I have ever had.
Kaliandra deserves to go from strength to strength and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for an encounter with real Javanese culture in beautiful and comfortable surroundings.

Me, Coen (holland) and Andi (austria) arrived here in the afternoon and were welcomed bij Renza, a young local, and the staff, who gave us an incredible tour, full of information, around their area and explained everything about the eco-farming and community development.

Even after his office hours Renza and others troubled theirselves to organise a guide and equipment for us to be able to start a trekking around arjuna the next morning. Other than that the guesthouse we stayed in (local) was amazing.

All together an unforgettable experience, thanks everyone!

The old colonial style of the hotel was very nice, the rooms were comfortable and the staff very good. There are extensive grounds that suggest quiet walks. However, this is one of the noisiest hotels I've ever stayed in. The call to prayer at 4am is blasted out from speakers in the nearby village or perhaps a madrassa. The second morning the speakers kicked off again at 5.30 at least for an extended period. The second evening there seemed to be a village party that also involved very loud music.

A great base for Taman Safari Park, but bring good ear plugs!

I recently took a group of Australian secondary school students to Kaliandra for five wonderful days where they engaged in the Javanese culture through gamelan, dance, pencak silat and wayang kulit workshops and witnessed the beauty of the surrounding countryside via a cycling tour and climb up Mount Bromo, 3 hours to the west. This a remarkable place where principles of sustainability and respect for the environment and local culture are practised and reflected in every aspect of life. The program co-ordinators are natural teachers and know how to maximise learning opportunities of the Indonesian language and culture. They listened to our request to communicate only in Indonesian (although they do speak English) and within hours our students felt completely at ease being immersed in the language spoken by all staff and workshop instructors. Our students were completely overwhelmed by the magic and tranquility of Kaliandra and all wished that we had stayed longer. The highlights of our stay included the day we spent at a local high school where we given the warmest welcome by students and teachers, as well as, an evening Neuro-Linguistic Programming and fire walking workshop. There are so many programs with a wide range of activities at Kaliandra to suit a variety of travelers and groups. We will never forgot this beautiful place and the wonderful people we met during our stay. Matur nuwun.

Kaliandra is one of the great wonders of the world, I feel!

This eco-tourism destination is absolutely fantastic. The great thing about Kaliandra, is that there is something suited to all age groups and to those who want to enjoy a relaxing retreat to those who want a proactive and adventurous time. The best thing it that what everything you do you are contributing to the social and environmental aims that help make the surrounding villages sustainable for the future.

I do have to say that it is the staff that makes it a fabulous journey, they are so accommodating and hospitable, and nothing is too much for them.

I can’t wait to visit Kaliandra again soon.

Kaliandra in one word is awesome, i was extremley lucky and got to stay in the budget accom and the more upmarket holiday cottages, both were exceptional
The people at Kaliandra are the nicest iv ever met, and if its a relaxing break or something a bit more adventutrous Kaliandra can provide both.
As it is on the slopes of Mount Arjuna, humidity is not really a problem however on sunny days there is an outside pool to laze around.

Would i go back definatly!!! would i reccomend it to everyone i know Yes Yes Yes!!!!

I stayed there on a school trip for 4 nights from 13 to 17 October 2014
First of all, the place was beautiful! I really loved the bungalow where we stayed in and the whole area, the scenery was breathtaking. We stayed in Sadewa bungalow. The bed was very comfy and the bathrooms were well mantained. Hot water is available for the first few showers. We were 9 in the house that time, and usually the last ones do not get hot water
The staff were very friendly and willing to help. They spoke fluent english. On the last night, I had to be sent to the hospital at 11pm and one of the staffs was willing to send me there.
The food was okay, some tasted better than the others. It was a bit bland but it was okay.
The activities were very well planned. Paintball and the Bromo sunrise trip was beautiful. The classes and courses were very fun too!
I will be definitely willing to come back to Kaliandra. It was a very memorable trip!

We just gotten back from 3 days and two nights at Kaliandra and I must agree that they've been terrific for school children. We took a 42 7th graders. The staff did an excellent job of engaging our normally jaded charges, teaching them about hay puppets, pottery, the gamelan, kite flying, traditional Javanese dance, sand painting, and some basic trekking (these were hardcore city kids you!). We, the accompanying teachers, were impressed by the class handling and connection the trainers were able to establish. I believe the children learned so much because of this experience. The accommodations were likewise very good. The pristine sheets, the lovely pillows, and the hot water were all very much appreciated. We would like to do this again next time and perhaps stay longer to do the Bromo trek.

Kaliandra is an extraordinary, magical place, like nowhere else I've ever been. It has 4 different levels of accommodation, dotted around a 21 hectare site of landscaped gardens, woodland, pathways. There's basic, hostel-type accommodation for backpackers, but most of what they have is more upmarket: there are villas for hire set next to beautiful pools, and a little way up the hill there are wooden lodges with comfortable rooms and lovely views. Then there's the really top end, a stay in the magnificent Villa Leduk, a vast Palladian mansion built in the 1990s.
There are all kinds of tours and activities to do there - a high ropes adventure course, local village tours, learning the gamelan, cooking Javanese food (to name but a few). I spend several days there every year and always wish it could be longer.
It's at 800m above sea-level on the slopes of Mount Arjuna, so it's cool enough not to need air-conditioning - you even need a sweater sometimes! You look down from the site over the plains of East Java. The food is good (Javanese style only). The staff and villagers around it are really nice, relaxed and hospitable. And as an added bonus, staying there helps to support the social and environmental programmes of the foundation which owns Kaliandra. It just couldn't be better!

please contact the place direct. when we visited we arranged our own transport. I believe they can send a car to pick you at a fee since they don't own any vehicle for clients. I hope that helps.
