Hawksbill Resort Antigua garners praise for its immaculate condition and regularly refreshed rooms set amidst a serene, natural location that captivates guests with its proximity to beaches and restaurants. While the friendly and attentive staff enhance guest experiences, some have noted service can occasionally lag. The resort's array of beaches, a new infinity pool, and water sports options are popular, although the presence of renovations is noted.
Rooms are varied, offering sea views and direct beach access, though some may find the decor outdated. Overall, the resort's rustic charm and affordable pricing strike a chord with visitors, despite some aspects being considered overpriced.

The best things about this resort are provided by Nature: location, beaches, and the weather. Yes, weather - mostly sunny but even when it rained (it did, 30-50% of the time in late January), it's in short 'waves' with sufficient sunny breaks in-between; and the temperature never dropped below 25C.
The buildings are somewhat aged and 'light', but reasonably well maintained and safe even in stormy winds. The 2 main private beaches were never crowded and well maintained. Nice lush gardens are also well kept.
The room - a Superior Seaview King room in the main building - was spacious and comfortable. Facilities were on par with most 3-4 star hotels worldwide, although some minor detail felt below expectations set by the price here. Comfortable bed, well airconditioned, large seaview balcony (they call it 'patio';), large TV and reliable WiFi (also covering the entire campus). The bathroom is also up to 3-4 star standards, except the showers being outdoor, in a protected niche. That wasn't much of a problem, but disappointingly that area did not drain well and even a brief shower made you stand ankle-deep in slowly draining water.
All-inclusive is a quantitative, not a qualitative term: there is plenty of food and drinks, but choice is limited and quality would meet 3-star expectations at best. Despite not having Michelin-level chefs, you will always find something delicious and won't starve ;) For non-vegans I'd recommend the corner stall where different meats are grilled or roasted every day and dispensed in front of you (as opposed to the rest of the food being pre-cooked and placed in the usual self-serve covered trays).
For those enjoying a drink (or few) there is a decent choice of cocktails, plus some wines and beers. Local Merlot wine is not too bad, and local beers are quite good and recommended ;)
Staff everywhere is very friendly and helpful, which makes up for occasional lack of professionalism due to incomplete training. Treating customers with respect and a smile, though, always leaves a nice impression.
The 'infinity' pool is a joke. It is infinitely small, not a swimming but a 'soaking pool'; filled with sea water is a questionable decision given the island's sufficient fresh water supply and modern pool recirculation technologies. Nonethe less, many guests preferred to stay there despite the fantastic swimming experience in the sea. Maybe I have the wrong taste ;) --- N.B. Do wake up early to 'reserve' your sunbeds, like everywhere else;)

Finally made it back to Hawksbill where we visited in 2017 (got engaged there too!). We were booked to return in 2020 but the pandemic hit and we cancelled. I waited for the upgrades to occur in 2023 and we made our return the end of Sept-start of October. The selling points of this hotel remain - three wonderful beaches, each with its own character - Royal Palm with its snorkelling, Sea Grape with it excellent swimming, and Honeymoon Cove with it seclusion. The location is also excellent - a decent drive from St John's and the airport (20 minutes), and being at the end of the road, there is no traffic passing the site. Likewise, the fringing forested hills which surround the property mean you don't have high-rises or population centers looking down on you (looking at you MoBay and Cayo Coco). The working staff is friendly to a person no matter whether they are a manager or a server or a cleaner. There is no harassment by vendors on the beach. The food had even improved from 7 years ago, and it was good then, through the addition of a lunch service at the main restaurant to augment the beach restaurant with its more limited menu. My wife is a professional chef who is not easily impressed, and she was impressed. Lastly, the ambiance - you come here because you want a quieter experience of the land and sea. You can rent a jet-ski or go out on a catamaran which arrives from further along the coast, but this hotel is for those who want to unwind and experience the tropics as they were 50 years ago (there is no TV in the room, although it is wired for Wifi). For our last visit we were in a cottage facing Royal palm beach, but this time were were in the renovated building facing Sea Grape beach. This location proved even better with its proximity to both restaurants and its view of the beach where we swam most often. We will return to Hawksbill again.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
Average stay at the Hawksbill. The positives; the beaches and infinity pool are really beautiful. We managed to get a sun lounger each day but it is worth noting that there isn’t many. Our room (Royal Palm suite) was always clean and air conditioned. Despite being rife for mosquitos at this time of year, our room was always clear of bugs. Brad, who runs drinks to the pool and beach was great and kept us very hydrated! The courtesy room to shower before leaving for our late flight was also a great addition.
The negatives - the food. There was only one restaurant open for dinner due to low hotel capacity, the buffet food was simply awful. You couldn’t really make a meal of anything. The buffet area is not air conditioned or cool, we didn’t touch the salads or fruit because it was warm and sweating and many of the desserts were also melting. It all felt a bit dirty. For those who have left good reviews about the food, I am quite concerned about what they’re eating! Additionally all drinks we had were almost always warm and flat, we started asking for cans as these were slightly better (albeit warm). The only decent food was on BBQ night.
Mini bar - if you book the royal palm suite directly with the hotel then they will keep your mini bar topped up (which is worthwhile if you’re planning to spend the day outside your room on the beach). We upgraded our room with the hotel upon arrival for $500 but told we were not eligible for a mini bar because our original booking was not through them. This felt a bit tight and money-grabbing.
Staff - aside from a few exceptions (and it did improve towards then end of our stay), most staff appeared grumpy and abrasive. Particularly those that man the beach/towel hut. They were unhelpful (e.g on one day there were no clean towels available and they didn’t offer any other suggestion). They also seem to be understaffed, our check-in took over 1.5 hrs and in the end we chose to carry our bags down to our room (impossible if you have mobility issues). There are also guys on the beach selling (legitimate) trips but they situate themselves bang in the middle on sun loungers, meaning you can’t avoid the sales pitch or sitting near them.
PS. If you’re planning on staying in a Royal Palm room then be aware that these are semi-detached. Our neighbours woke us up several nights in a row in the early hours talking and shutting doors etc. The walls are very thin!
Overall, we are unlikely to stay here again. It was average because it was low season and the hotel was nowhere near at capacity. I’m really not sure how this place would cope during high season and for that reason I wouldn’t recommend.

Dear Caroline Clayton, Thank you for choosing our resort for your stay and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted to read your compliments of our beaches, infinity pool, clean, air condition and bug free room, the drink service received from Brad around the pool and on the beach as well as the courtesy shower room prior to departure. Regrettably, some shortfalls in your dining experience and staff service impacted the full holiday experience we hope for you, and for this we extend our sincerest apology. We value your feedback and have taken detailed notes of the comments and concerns shared and have shared them with our management team for further review and necessary improvements. We completely understand that an apology does not in any way change the past, but it is our sincerest hope you will grant us the opportunity of redemption with a return visit that will certainly surpass your last and change any negative perception that you may have of our resort. Kind regards Hawksbill Team

My partner and I went with no expectations. We just needed sun, beach, pool, clean accommodations in a safe environment with decent food. Hawksbill did not disappoint!
The resort boasts 4 beaches and the best swimming beach is Sea Grapes. Here you will also find the water sports hut for your water adventures.
The infinity pool is divine and a lovely addition to this magical place.
The meals were quite decent - nicely well laid out buffets with evening entertainment. A few options for lunch to change things up from day to day.
The staff were all very lovely, attentive and super helpful.
There are a variety of rooms to choose from at different price points. We stayed in a freshly renovated Royal Palm Beach King Bed Bungalow. It was spacious and super clean and was attended to daily by the housekeeping staff. French doors opened up directly onto a small patio and Cabana overlooking Royal Palm Beach with the sun pouring in and at night, waves lulling you to sleep.
We booked directly with Hawksbill to take advantage of the VIP pricing and upon doing that a mini bar was included in our room along with a courtesy shuttle to and from the airport.
Clearly lit paths (at night) to guide you to the restaurants. Clean walkways and stairs along with well maintained landscaping throughout the resort. The security gate is close to these bungalows so we felt safe at all times. Excellent water pressure and remote controlled air conditioning.
A well stocked gift shop with cold drinks, snacks, souvenirs, cigarettes, alcohol, clothing and toiletries.
Checking in and out was a breeze - and reception is lovely overlooking Sea Grapes Beach.
If you are looking for a more affordable laid back place to enjoy a peaceful and serene vacation - then by all means, please consider this destination! It's not a party place and it feels quite remote.
For a 3 to 3.5 star resort - we happily give Hawksbill a 4 star rating.
Why not 5 stars? Small things really - all of which I addressed by direct email after our return home. A bit of a daily shortage of beach towels, no portable drying rack in our room to hang wet items and some suggestions about improving / tweaking their nightly entertainment. And while the food was quite good - some things were repetitive.
Please also note ....If you have issues with mobility - you will be challenged by steep slopes and stairs along with a few stairs in the Tamarind Restaurant.
Would we return? Absolutely!

Dear Valued Guests, Thank you for your review and your honest feedback regarding your recent stay at Hawksbill resort Antigua. We are pleased to know that we did not disappoint, and you enjoyed our accommodations, our beautiful beaches, the food offerings and our infinity pool which you describe as a lovely addition to this magical place. And to top it all off our amazing staff who are ever so eager and willing to serve all our guests. The small things you highlighted, have been placed high on our agenda, the beach towels concern has been short lived, and the drying racks and the nightly entertainment tweaking will be addressed in short order. In terms of the food, we have since reopened PDs restaurant at lunchtime where we offer you two seating’s and shortly the Seagrapes A la Carte dinner restaurant will be opened, giving our guests more choices and dining options. Once again thank you for staying with us and the team at hawksbill can’t wait to welcome you back. Kind Regards

Hawksbill Resort is amazing value for money. The location is exceptional with 4 different beautiful beaches and a completely private position behind a set of hills. The beaches are not too deep, the water is not too rough (unlike Galley Bay nearby) and the resort is spread out over a relatively large area so the sun loungers are spaced out nicely for privacy. The rooms are big with comfortable beds, not particularly fancy but they give you everything you need except a TV (which we wouldn’t have used anyway). We thought the food was tasty, healthy, with lots of choice and head chef Brian Joseph really looked after us by making extra vegan dishes as necessary (he was definitely a highlight of our stay). The hotel really put effort in for evening entertainment with a steel band, fire dancer, singers and great DJ (DJ Fenton). Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve were extra special with lots of decorations, hats and dancing. The free tennis and watersports (canoes and SUPs) was easy to use and well maintained. All of the staff were lovely and seemed to really care (shout out to barman David and room service Derricia). It was the second cheapest resort we could find in Antigua but offers amazing value for money, compared to some of the more expensive options which probably don’t offer much more for the price.

Start with the good points. Hawksbill Bay itself is wonderful. The main beach and sea is lovely. The restaurant is high up on a hill with panoramic views and the hotel has lush green hills behind. Sunsets are picturesque. Mattress...best ever at a hotel, lovely soft towels. Bar service is solid. Pool is ok.
Not so good. The other 3 beaches are average with rocks that prevent swimming. Hotel is tired but getting a few updates. Sunbeds were scarce. Food is very narrow choice. Drinks at the bar are decent..so long as they have the bottles available.
Disappointing. Gym is one failing treadmill and an old exercise bike. Service in the restaurant could be slower even than 'antigua-time'....all we wanted was a glass of water and cutlery. The daily smell of sewage wafting across the restaurant wasn't nice. The two additional restaurants, on the beach and PDs, are a step down (except that PDs is a wonderful spot by the sea). They could both be so much better with just a bit of effort. There is no '4th' restaurant listed on the website. Toilets near the restaurant are unpleasant.
Hawksbill aim to be honest in their website description and I applaud that. But instead of a super-relaxed hotel its slipping over to an under-managed hotel. And that ends up being a bit frustrating. We've been to more than 15 hotels / islands and they all have charming quirks, but Hawksbill Resort is not so much quirky as just not well run.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for your detailed review and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted to hear about the aspects of your stay that you enjoyed, such as the hotel being wonderful, the main beach (sea grapes) being lovely, the panoramic view from tamarind tree restaurant and the lush green hills behind the hotel as well as the picturesque sunsets, the best ever mattress you ever had at a hotel, the lovely soft towels and the solid bar service. We are truly sorry to hear that certain aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations and for this we humbly apologize. It is important to note that even though rocks can be found in the other three beaches, there are areas where one can swim comfortably, and these beaches are very popular with our guests. We are disappointed you were able to access the gym that has been closed. We have carefully noted and shared your comments on the restaurants and the toilets near the restaurants with the department heads for evaluation and improvements. There are always ways for us to continue to improve and we will certainly take your feedback into consideration as we continue to grow. Kind regards Hawksbill Team

Resort just did not live up to expectations. We had asked for non-smoking accommodations and were placed next to a couple who smoked 24/7. We couldn’t have our window open to listen to the waves at night, we couldn’t use our private porch or private cabana with loungers bc the smoke. Majority of staff was friendly. Supposed to be an All inclusive resort, upon arrival they charged us $170 for picking us up at airport and taking us back. We had 3 Restaurants open at varying times and all closed at 10pm and if you wanted certain foods they were an extra charge.

Stayed for a fortnight in December having on our previous 3 visits stayed on the south side of the island. Why? Fancied a change and wow, so pleased we switched. On arrival met by efficient check in staff and a cold glass of bubbly, quickly taken to our room which was close by. This was a superior ocean view on the ground floor which was clean and airy with an elevated veranda which had great views and very close to the beach. In brief, we enjoyed our stay immensely, hubby loved his sailing and myself, snorkelling off the beach. Met some great people whilst bobbing in the waves watching the sunsets daily and chatting in the restaurants and bars.
Pros Book direct, comp transfers and mini bar filled daily. Do any early morning walk to the end of Eden beach for amazing views. Make friends with the ducks and birds even if they do tap on your window at 0615 Eat at least 1 lunch at PD grill but get a shady spot. Beaches are clean, no seaweed, and showers are dotted about to wash off salt. Never overcrowded. Rooms were cleaned daily No high bill of extras on checkout. No surly staff, all were very friendly and welcoming. A popular place for super yachts to moor up, don’t forget binoculars ( we did… damn !)
Cons Can’t really think of any.
Thankyou so much Hawksbill, we will certainly be back. Best wishes to the Seagrapes chef who got hurt too.

We had a lovely two week holiday but there were a few things we weren’t happy with. We had booked directly with the hotel but the only advantage was the minibar being filled every day though we had to ask three times for this before it happened. We had a superior sea view room and we spoke to several people who had booked directly or with other companies (Virgin, British Airways) who were upgraded but we were not. We found the front desk staff quite rude and dismissive and on arrival we received no drink which I noticed other people had. The room was ok though the keys seemed to fit any room so make sure you lock valuables in your safe. We had someone come into our room using their key and we mistakenly entered another room using our’s. There are no wardrobes, only a hanging rail, and no mirror apart from the bathroom.
During our first week service in the main restaurant was not good. We often had to go to the bar ourselves as we couldn’t get a glass of wine. By 8 pm a lot of the food trays were empty and weren’t refilled. The choice for vegetarians was awful but after speaking to the Assistant Manager, Mario, things improved. However, the bbq was all meat. By the second week the hotel became a lot busier and the restaurant choices improved.
The sea was quite rough a lot of the time and so the pool was busy and during the second week all beds were reserved by 7.30 am. There were also no drinks available around the pool and we either had to walk down to the Sea Grapes bar or wait for a waiter.
The thing that makes the hotel special is the location. Most of the rooms have a lovely sea view. The water sports are plentiful and the staff are wonderful. We took out kayaks, went snorkelling and went out with Fenton on a Hobiecat (just as a huge rainstorm arrived but it added to the fun though Fenton wasn’t happy!) . All of the staff (apart from front of desk) were fantastic.
So overall the hotel was a bit disappointing but the location and staff made up for it. We are still undecided about returning but I don’t think we would book directly as there seemed to be no advantage.

We stayed for 10 days in November. Overall the weather was good. Our room was an upper floor Superior Sea View room and we were very pleased with it. Large and airy with very good air conditioning. The bathroom was long and had an outdoor shower at the end (you could see out over the wooden wall but you could not be seen). Some fellow guests complained that there was no mirror in the bedroom but that didn't bother us. All staff were friendly and some were super friendly. The bars had a large selection of cocktails and measures were generous. The food was good but not as much choice as at more expensive resorts. I always found something I liked. The prawn/ shrimp salad at the Sea Grapes beach bar was excellent. Went to PD's grill once and thought the service was slow. We had two small issues, shower drainage and toilet flush, and these were both sorted out very quickly. I would recommend staying here if you are not too fussy - you won't get 5 star treatment but you should have a nice relaxing stay.
