Had an amazing stay here on Sunday night. Wonderful location. This is definitely the best accommodation in the area. The personal treatment is great. The restaurant is also incredible. Highly recommended. Would like to have stayed another night but unfortunately this wasn't possible.

One night break was make extra special by the level of attention to detail. From arrival through to departure, the professionalism of the staff, great extras on the rooms including electric blankets, underfloor heating and heated towel rails make this Mooi River Boutique hotel a first choice. Chef Tijn's breakfast, lunch and dinner menu was exceptional.

I had the good fortune to be invited to lunch at the newest addition to the culinary arsenal of Hartford House - the Tea House. To say I was blown away by the place is an understatement, what an amazing oasis of tranquility and beauty the tea house is. We were warmly welcomed by chef on duty, Zinhle Majola and... More

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Hartford house. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. Our room( suite 15) was stylishly decorated and exhibited luxury with double baths, a large fireplace, a king bed and under floor heating. The views from the room are stunning. The turn down service was superb. The fireplace was lit and the... More

From the welcome as you arrive by the friendly manager to the attention to detail by the entire staff...who made sure our rooms were warm in the biting cold...heated doors, fireplace in some rooms toasty beds which were beautifully made at nighttime. The chefs who made our dining experience unforgettable with a 5 course meal and delicious breakfasts. Will definitely... More

The food, the food, the food.. Hartford house is a little piece of paradise, so lovely, in fact that you can't even begrudge the extra five kilograms you gain on the hips throughout your stay! We stayed in the Emanzini suite which was beautiful, wonderfully grand and warm throughout our stay which concluded with a fairy-tale snow fall. The wedding... More

What a beautiful building. So peaceful but so proud and full of memories. The staff were extremely friendly and helpfull. The rooms were spotless clean... except for the shower' drain that was 'a bit over worked" and smelled gross when leaving the showerdoor open... Breakfast was always delightful and something to look forward to. Highly recommend this beautiful place.

This is an amazing hotel...wonderful setting, rooms, food, staff...and they have the brilliant Duncan who rules everything and Constantine, their new and excellent chef. You only have to ask (often you don't even finish the question!!!)...but the answer is always yes One word of warning...they expect you to have the 5 course tasting menu every evening unless you say you... This was our third visit to Hartford House and we can safely say that it has gone from strength to strength. From Duncan's gracious hosting to Tijn's incredible food and Mbulelo's friendly manner it was the perfect weekend getaway in an exquisite location. The newly opened tea house, Tijn Huis is a great addition to the overall Hartford House experience.... More

This was a short 2 night visit and we stayed in the enormous Lakeside Suite (I think there may be more than one, but it was the closest to the main house). The room had a massive living room with an open fire, and absolutely massive everything else, including the views; splendid! Service in every regard was second to none.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Peering through one teakwood door at Hartford House, you face a Colonial world. Opening another, the distant sounds of an ancient people at work lilt across the silent landscape, a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. This place commands a headland between the world of traditional cultures and the splendid style of our settler forebears. It is the resolution of all South African safaris. The journey's exclamation point, a retreat from the hubbub where you make sense of a fast life and its senseless details. This is where we learn to redress ourselves on a first name basis. There are too many luxury hotels in the world offering the same: a chocolate on the pillow, canned romance, and cuisine called "haut" because it's spelled in French. Hartford stands apart for its integrity. Its architecture, views, dining, sounds, smells, its racehorses and its people are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this Zululand, this culture, to Africa. Yes, you come here to be pampered, but at Hartford luxury is the journey, not the destination. The truth is, Hartford just happened. A home, and a grand one at that, which grew into a hotel. A community looks to it as its watering hole, its nexus of entertainment, its fountain of gossip. In so many ways, it's gained and regained inspiration from the cultures it celebrates. It is life's exception, a place at the same time comfortable beyond dreams, yet innocent of pretence. ... more   less
