Nestled in a prime location ideal for excursions, the Barceló Maya Riviera is celebrated for its spacious rooms with stunning views, though some guests have noted cleanliness and noise issues. The resort's beach and adults-only areas are a hit, but seaweed and booking challenges have been flagged. While service and cleanliness receive accolades, inconsistent experiences have been mentioned. The vibrant atmosphere and stylish decor contribute to a social vibe, although it can be overwhelming for those seeking tranquility. Despite the resort's extensive amenities, some travelers feel the value is diminished by high costs and dining disappointments.

This is an excellent resort. Overall, the entertainment team was commendable, although improvements could be made in advertising activities. Some events were either delayed or canceled, despite being scheduled.

The Mexican a la carte restaurant, including the taco bar, was excellent, with great service. The hostess kindly accommodated us for a no-show reservation on Christmas day, a relief since other a la carte restaurants were fully booked during the holiday season. However, La Comedie's refusal of walk-ins, accompanied by a rude attitude by the hostess, was disappointing.

The resort was clean and comfortable, but I suggest having staff monitor wristbands to maintain exclusivity for Maya Riviera customers. Unfortunately, guests from other resorts with different-colored bracelets entered our space.

Nightly entertainment was average, leading us to explore alternatives at neighboring resorts. Fortunately, the shuttle service made the commute manageable. One drawback is the resort's remote location, resulting in expensive taxi rides to town, with potential scams like the "no change" scheme.

In summary, while the entertainment team and Mexican restaurant were highlights. Minus the location, I would highly recommend this resort!

The hotel is beautiful.
It has the largest panoramic pool in the Riviera Maya.
Adults-only hotel.
Positive points: Anyone staying at this hotel can enjoy all the services of the other 5 hotels within the complex. There is a 2-decker bus that takes us to the other hotels and the shopping center, which is huge, very varied and beautiful. It has an open-air church, surrounded by a lake and lights, very beautiful. It has a medical clinic and gym. Huge rooms with jacuzzi on the balcony, good cleanliness, many points of interest within the entire complex, there is never a shortage of chairs, tables or towels. Most employees are attentive and friendly. Rooms with garden views have the advantage of being able to see lots of animals: squirrels, coats, capybaras and rooms with sea/pool views, some with their own pool. Well stocked mini bar and restocked every day.
Negative points: there is a DJ (DJ Pauleto) live at the Music Bar (bar by one of the pools) and shows at night. Both play under a roof that makes a lot of echo and the sound is too loud. It's impossible to hear drink orders at the Music Bar, poor employees. I complained a few times, they turned the sound down, but then it went up again... The music is almost always techno, which in the Caribbean is not expected... Smokers have their own smoking areas, but they are all in the sun, without the slightest shadow. In fact, the shades on the sun loungers don't cover the sun well... On the day of departure after 3 pm we can't consume anything else, just water, they no longer serve drinks in the bars, as they remove the bracelets as soon as we check out. The drinks are not very good, the different mixtures are sickening and they don't always know how to make them, it varies from bar to bar. Only at the Pool Bar was there a super friendly waiter who knew how to make Frappuccino, Juan Martinez, a 5-star waiter. In the other bars they didn't do anything even similar. Buffet is incredible, the food has above average quality and variety, during breakfast and lunch. As the hotel was full, it was open for dinner too. However, at other times it closes at 6pm, which is completely illogical. It doesn't make sense to choose the best and most expensive hotel in the Barceló complex but for dinner you have to go to the buffet in one of the other hotels. Furthermore, we chose an adults-only hotel but if we want to have a buffet dinner, we have to go to a hotel with children. The beaches are huge, but the best is the one at the Maya Beach hotel, the others and the hotel's own have lots of rocks, without any warning, I saw a lot of people get cuts or sprains. There should be this information on the beaches.

We went to this superb hotel in April. We are 75% satisfied with this place. Here's why: The pluses. First of all, the site, the room, the beach, the swimming pools, everything is magnificent. The restaurants are very beautiful and the staff is really nice, especially Luis Dias in charge of the buffet (thanks for everything) as well as Alberto, excellent service and always with a smile. Perfect room service etc..., the jackuzi on the patio is really a plus and the fact that we were on the garden side on the 3rd floor was very intimate and no bugs. Well the minuses. We are REALLY disappointed with the a la carte restaurants for 3 reasons, 1- the food is really not worthy of a 5*, not bad but no culinary wow ex: the caprese salad had been in the fridge for at least 2 days so much so 'was cold and the tomatoes were translucent.2- you always had to reserve and 3- when we were going to reserve the restaurant that I wanted opened in 2 days but as there are only 4 restaurants you quickly got around to it, it was is not because there are no tourists, it was almost full. So there are still the restaurants on the family side with children but we paid more to have adults only, we said why not the buffet it is very well, no it closes at 6 p.m., ok we'll order in the room sorry it's at our expense. Now the bars: the 2 pool bars are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Afterwards if you want a drink you go up on the 2nd floor at the lobby bar (because the lobby is on the 2nd floor and not the 1st) it's far away if you want to have a drink at the pool or at the beach. Another thing, conventions grrr. The first week we said how quiet it was. But the conventions started to arrive, incredible, I don't know what they were doing but they were walking around everywhere talking loudly to everyone all night in the corridors, slamming the doors and shouting at each other from each side of the corridor, and During the day they ate the buffet morning and noon, talking very loudly from table to table. What a lack of respect and knowing how to live, it looked like they all came out of the jungle and had never lived among the world. We barely slept the last 4 days. We are happy to have gone there but because of these negative points, we will not return. Too bad because it’s truly magnificent.

Total cost for 7 nights for two was 1900.00. We went for a family wedding. None of our rooms were together in the same building. No one from the resort informed us that there was a shuttle, so we walked everywhere in 90 degree weather for blocks at a time just to get to a meal. Had to have a reservation for any restaurant on site or you had to eat at the buffet which was NOT good. No food poolside at all and servers did not come around regularly so you had to get your own drinks. Also minimal drinks in room (a couple sodas, waters and Corona) Room service was an extra cost and only if you left your credit card number at the main desk. Calls to guest services went unanswered. Web site advertised a pristine beach, 5 star food, drink and service. NOT even close. Beach was full of seaweed to the point you could not even swim in the ocean. Most of our party were sick half way into our stay. Four of our guests could not leave their room because of stomach illness. The plastic cups that were used for all drinks throughout the resort were collected and reused (maybe disinfected). I watched a worker pull them out of the garbage and also all servers collected them diligently. The bartenders would bring the same cups out of the back room dripping wet. One cup I got with a "fresh drink" had teeth marks in the side!

The bride had diligently read reviews and picked your resort based on your "five star amenities" which turned out to be false. At least the wedding and reception were beautiful.

Dear donnabF9741DO. Thank you for sharing your feedback about your stay with us. We are sad to read that it was not completely satisfactory for you. As you mention, our hotel is very large and that is why we have transportation for all our guests from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. with tours throughout the property. Regarding variety of food, we are sad to know that you are not enjoy it, normally we get very good comments about that. On the other hand, let me mention you that the resort has 15 restaurants and 7 buffets with a wide variety of food to pamper all our guests. Taking with it opportunity to have a different experience each day. Service is a primary focus for our employees, we want to say sorry if the staff was not as helpful as they should have been. Let me inform you the resort's plastic glasses are washed with special products and at high temperatures to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria and, at the same time, ensure the safety of our guests. Finally, we are glad that you enjoyed the wedding and reception. We always appreciate the contribution of our guests, suggestions and comments help us to know your preferences, for that reason we are working on it to exceed your expectations. Best regards. Mixed feelings about our stay.

The staff in the restaurants, cleaning, bars, etc. are all really lovely and treat us great. A staff like this is appreciated.

We are Barceló customers and it is our third time here and the staff has improved a lot.
However, the customer service at check-in was terrible. Barely anything was explained to us, the girl with very little enthusiasm, only put the bracelets on us and did not give us any explanation when we saw other clients that they even gave them a tour of the facilities. I am an older person and no matter how much they tell me that I can scan the QR codes, I can't even explain that, I can't barely see my phone. It seems rude to me that we who have just arrived and are tired from a long trip treat us like this. There was also no option to upgrade but through payment, which we understand is sometimes not possible, but we have met clients who have done it and on top of that it is their first time here. Then there are the typical influencers who are harmed with everything.

On the other hand, we think it is very good that they hold events, conventions and congresses but this makes tourists uncomfortable when the number of congressmen triples the number of tourists. In the restaurants it is chaos.

Furthermore, since the Maya Riviera is adults only, this morning we saw a family with a girl of about 12 years old. We have expressed our discomfort because if it is only for adults it is for everyone. We have left a child at home since he couldn't come here, and we found this... so this has upset us quite a bit.
We have also had problems some nights with the “parties” in the rooms that these people throw and the noise they cause, preventing the rest from resting.

We would also like to add that being in the most expensive hotel in the entire resort, there will not be a buffet for dinner and having to travel to others is a pain. In our case, a person has various intolerances and must follow a vegan diet, in the rest of the restaurants there are hardly any options. And here always the same options that become very repetitive and there are days when always resorting to legumes to eat a little protein is not the best for the stomach. That's what we warned in advance.

Finally, the cleanliness of the rooms is conspicuous by its absence. Even though we have been here for ten days now, the handwashers have not been cleaned any day. You always have to let them know so they can replenish drinks or soaps. We have been without shower gel for several days and until we notify them they do not replenish it. They should pay more attention to those details.

Still, we are comfortable but we would like you to reflect on this. And especially regarding the “adults only” issue, give us an explanation.

The food and drinks are of terrible quality, the facilities do not have AC or fans, the time in the common areas is limited to 10 pm they no longer let you be there alone in the lobby bar that has snack service until “1am” but they no longer wanted to offer service at 11pm. There is no drink service or food on the beach, if you want something to drink you must stop and go to the bar, and there is no snack service or food during the day to take to the beach, you must wait until the reservation time you made at the restaurant of your choice. To be an all inclusive hotel they should not charge the room service of food and drinks, whose menu is limited to 5-6 things nothing else, they give you delivery schedule of the service and we for ordering a hotdog and a sandwich club took us almost 3 hours, we ended dinner at 3 am.
Activities are super limited and there is nothing to do, if you want additional activities you must pay for them.
They never got to refill the fridge in the room either.
The cleaning staff opens the rooms at any time, without knocking on the door!!
Do yourself a favor and find a different resort don't spend your money in this place

This is a very large complex with 6 resorts in one. We originally booked at the Moon Palace but were upgraded to Adults Only as they were overbooked for the Holiday season. Check in was relatively easy but they forgot our welcome drink and our towel cards. We were supposed to be close to our family but that did not happen. Our room was very, spacious, comfortable and had lots of cupboards for clothing and a long marble top for suitcases. Mini bar with chips and peanuts! Bathroom was large with private toilet separate from vanity and walk-in shower.
Food was very delicious but you had to decide on your starter, soup, main entree and dessert all at once. Mexican coffee was expertly done with Juan in the Mexican restaurant. Complete with Mexican gasoline for the fire. Each restaurant had its own unique menus. Loved the Caribe in the Moon Palace with Erik. Buffet had lots to offer but very large area and food cooled very quickly as you wandered around to get all the choices.
Language was a problem but Google translate works well. You need to have a smart phone to navigate all the apps. Air Transat no longer keeps paper books for your departure—as the Rep told me, it’s all on the APP. If you are not tech savvy, travel with someone who is.
Most events geared towards the 18–40 year olds. They should offer some culture talks, cooking tips, tequila tastings, etc for the senior crowd.
A slippery floor in humid conditions led to a fall on the slick ceramic floors outside the Miramar buffet on a slight incline. Be careful.
The resort is very accessible for wheelchairs, walkers, etc.
The resort claims to be 100% smoke free but offers several smoking areas around the pool area and on the room patios. This was a problem sometimes especially with large cigars. Also allowed in the main lobby area while listening to music. The ashtrays were sickening to look at.
No outside vendors are allowed on the beach. The “Mall” has everything you could possible need plus a plaza of local merchants.
We probably would not return here as too large and impersonal for us.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. We regret to hear that certain aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, including the oversight with your welcome drink and towel cards, and the challenges experienced with language barriers and the use of technology for our services. We understand these elements are crucial for a comfortable stay and apologize for any inconvenience caused. Additionally, we note your concern regarding the smoking areas and the slick floors; please be assured that the comfort and safety of our guests are of utmost importance to us. We are pleased that you found the room spacious and comfortable, with ample storage and a well-stocked minibar. It's delightful to know that you enjoyed the quality and variety of our culinary offerings, including the expertly prepared Mexican coffee and the unique dining experiences at our Mexican and Caribe restaurants. The resort is beautiful but horrible service, limited options and lack of quality on what they do and offer. Very disappointing and will not comeback here or recommend to anyone.
Premium level is a waste of money, unless you love ordering bland room service food. Rude staff, very small and uncomfortable beds. Be aware that as a man you are obligated to use long pants for dinner or they will not let you in to any of their restaurants. Food is very average. Will not comeback, I do not recommend.

Beautiful large hotel and everything was always sparkling clean. The room we stayed in was large, beautifully designed with a nice swim out facing the pools and some ocean views. The rooms higher up with ocean views have some amazing views. The staff was friendly and always available. The pools were always fresh and clean and the option of the louder more party style pool looked fun but we opted to stay at the quieter pool which was still relaxing yet fun for socializing. The bar was always available for great Americanos, or any other type coffee if you prefer that to drinking liquor. The sports bar was very welcoming with a corner area with desserts and fresh made sandwiches and delicious coffee and cookies. Walking from one resort to the next was so much fun. The ocean swim was beautiful although the ‘beach hotel’ was superb with no rocks to navigate once you enter the water. Beautiful top hotel with lots to explore. Access to all other hotels is a bonus. One last thing, the buffet was huge and the food was chef level, and always super fresh and delicious. The were so many option including gluten free. We also tried 2 a la cartes, French and Taco bar, indescribably fantastic. This all inclusive is worth going back to for us. Our first adult only but you can mingle with families if you choose to at any of the other hotel buffets etc.

Thank you for an awesome vacation

Two years ago, I proposed to my girlfriend at the Barcelo Adults Only resort and had an incredible experience. The food, the rooms, the service, and the shows were all top-notch. We had such a great time that we returned for our honeymoon, bringing 18 guests with us for a week. Unfortunately, this time around, the experience was awful.

It’s shocking how much the quality has declined in just two years. There were so many issues that I felt compelled to leave a review.

1. Housekeeping was terrible. Three of the rooms our group checked into were filthy, with coffee stains on the counters, blood on the sheets, dead moth smears on the walls and floors, and various stains on the headboard, curtains, and sheets. Even after switching two rooms, we found more problems—like a pair of panties left in the closet, additional stains, and two enormous moths in one of the rooms.

Management was useless. The night manager literally walked away from me when I raised concerns, and the next day’s manager promised a deep clean of the rooms but refused to offer any compensation. Despite his assurance, the rooms were barely touched. Housekeeping simply changed the sheets and cleaned the toilets, but the real issues remained. No further accommodations were made.

2. The dinner reservation system is a nightmare. One of the supposed perks of this resort is access to neighboring properties, but guest services can’t make reservations at those other restaurants. The reservations we did manage to secure were either for the wrong time or wrong place. Trying to walk in was useless, as they claimed they couldn’t accommodate us, despite having empty tables everywhere.
3. The shows were awful. The “magic show” was a joke, with a performer doing amateur tricks you could buy from Amazon, like cutting ropes and linking rings. We also went to the “Fantasia” show, which was supposed to feature Disney songs. Not only were the speakers broken, making the sound unbearable, but many of the characters were from DreamWorks, not Disney, and the performances were terrible.

I’m deeply disappointed in this experience and urge anyone considering a stay here to think twice. This is not a five-star resort, and they just lost the business of 21+ people.

Response from Hotel- cmanager, Owner at Barceló Maya Riviera
Responded Oct 7, 2024
Dear Barcelo guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We are truly sorry to hear that your most recent stay fell short of the high standards you experienced during your previous visit to our resort. We understand the importance of clean and welcoming accommodations and regret that the condition of the rooms upon your arrival was not reflective of our commitment to excellence. Furthermore, we acknowledge the inconvenience you encountered with our dinner reservation system and the dissatisfaction with the evening entertainment provided. Nonetheless, we are delighted that you have fond memories of your initial visit, where the quality of our food, rooms, service, and shows contributed to a memorable proposal experience. We hope that you will return in the future for a more enjoyable stay. Kindest regards, Gerencia Barceló Maya Riviera The Management at Barceló Maya Riviera

Most ladies wear dresses or pants/capris with a blouse. Beach attire, short shorts, and extremely revealing tops are not seen there. Hope this helps.

Yes, there is a separate bar/lounge which is opposite the main bar (Bahia bar). Enjoy. It's a great resort. Cheers.
