We had a lovely stay in this quirky but charming manor house which has been updated from its 17th century form to serve as a small hotel. The rooms and grounds are very atmospheric, spreading love many acres and featuring lovely fountains. A new pool and tennis court were part of the remodel, and the upper level where those are provide stunning views of the valley below, including Ponte de Lima. The dinner served was unremarkable; ditto with breakfasts. Some of the lights (over bathtub/shower) were not working in our bathroom, which we reported.

This villa has been in the family of the present owner (Count Calheiros) since the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 17th century, and restored/renovated about 30 years ago. The setting is truly idyllic. The villa has a lovely side garden, a swimming pool with invigoratingly cold water, a tennis court, and a lovely shaded terrace, all of which overlook the Lima valley with the town of Ponte de Lima. Several of the approximately 15 rooms are spacious with beautiful views over the garden and down the valley (our room, #3, was one such room). Set menu breakfasts and dinners involve simple, very good, typical local fare with many of the ingredients (including the wine) coming from the grounds of the villa. The meals are served at the single large table in the dining room and the Count himself often joins the guests for dinner. The staff is most courteous and helpful.

The house and its setting are very beautiful indeed. There are acres of gardens, and several charming terraces where you can enjoy the wonderful view with a glass of estate-produced wine. Guests are encouraged to wander everywhere, and are made to feel at home. Our room was traditionally furnished - perhaps a little dark but with a comfortable bed and a modern bathroom. Dinner is a convivial affair with other guests sharing the lovely dining room. Don't expect gourmet cuisine, though. We relished the peaceful atmosphere and felt privileged to be staying in such a splendid, historic quinta. We also appreciate the efforts that the Count is making to maintain his own inheritance and to stimulate the local economy by attracting non-invasive tourism. We'd love to return!

This is the most wonderful country house to visit. Wonderful views and amazing building. It is not a 5 star hotel it is a wonderful old house. The Count and his wife were perfect hosts, from drinks before dinner in front of a log fire to dinner together. They also provided the best breakfast we had on our holiday. We are planning to come back next summer and hire their cottage.
