Lesley and John were absolutely great hosts. What an amazing grand old house. Excellent comfortable rooms and amenities. Our first stay in a B&B as a bit of a treat. Really wish we had more time. Another time maybe. Keep up the great work.

Akaroa is our last stop for 2-week road trip on NZ South Island, and Blythcliffe has made it quite memorable and touching. The house was 160 years of history, and the outlook into the garden is fabulous! Lesley and John couple gave us a very friendly welcome: knowing the fact that we missed the last Cruise on arrival and has...

Blythcliffe is an adorable old historic gem, located close to the centre of Akaroa and easy to find. It is walking distance to the centre of town. Our stay in December 2016 was wonderful. The house possibly the oldest in New Zealand, but the charm and ambiance of the house is superb. Very relaxing and fun. The hosts are super...

Historic gems are hard to find, especially one that you can share for one or two days. We just love this old house, it's history and associated character. As mere two year old residents of Akaroa - we love it!

We stayed at Blythcliffe in Febuary 2016. John and Lesley have done a marvellous job restoring this historic building of great character. We had a spacious, comfortable, excellently furnished room (The Stables) with its own patio. It was a short walk to the harbour and restaurants, the gardens were great to explore and John and Lesley are very interesting to...

John Harding bought this heritage house and its garden three years ago to restore and embellish them. From the heavily scented red rose by the front door, through the abundant flower beds, across the stream (with resident eel, Pavarotti) and up the cliff into the bush, this slice of land reflects the best conservation efforts which NZ encourages. John has...

A very charming historic home a short walk to the village. Comfortable and relaxed. Lesley and John were fantastic hosts and very informative about the house and the area. Blackberry the cat was very friendly and it was an amazing experience feeding Pavarotti the eel! Went for a walk in the grounds and surrounding bush and collected chestnuts.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Blythcliffe is a superb, 158 yr old grand house, set in extensive, restful and private grounds; built in the Colonial Regency style, and known locally as Akaroa's Stately Home. We are one of Akaroa's oldest and most loved houses and have a Category 1 listing with Heritage New Zealand,Pouhere Tahonga. We invite you to come and experience this very special home for your stay in the quaint and historic French settlement village of Akaroa. Blythcliffe is an easy 2 minute stroll to several excellent cafes and restaurants. Hire a bike or kayak and explore the many other attractions Akaroa Village, harbour and surrounding areas have to offer, you're centrally located for trips further afield on Canterbury's stunning Banks Peninsular. Escape the crowds - we have two guest accommodations available: The Stables is a self contained, completely private, stable conversion, adjacent to the main house and grape lined sunny courtyard. Perfect for that romantic getaway weekend or longer holiday, it's open plan with kitchen, bathroom - including a claw foot bath - and one (extremely comfortable!) super king sized bed. Single roll out beds are available on request for a fee, they are suitable for teenagers or children. The Stables has wheelchair access. Enjoy your delicious, self served continental breakfast in your room, the courtyard or our sunny garden croquet pavilion. The Rose Rooms at Blythcliffe are a sunny, comfortable private suite of 3 rooms in the main house that comfortably accommodates two. You'll enjoy a lovely airy, sunny bedroom, a separate breakfast / sitting room and a private bathroom with shower only; all accessed from the main upstairs hallway, on the second floor. You have private access to the second floor balcony from both the bedroom and sitting room, overlooking the croquet lawn & gardens, the perfect spot for a glass of wine or breakfast with the birds! Kereru, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes are frequent visitors, the bird song and skydiving of the Kereru are amazing! The Rose Rooms are sadly not wheelchair friendly, they are accessed via a semi-steepish staircase. Your rate for both spaces includes a delicious, self served continental breakfast and WiFi. Cooked breakfast (with eggs from our own free range chickens and NZ free range bacon) is served to you and available upon request at an extra charge of NZ$20 pp. Why not spend some time exploring the ethereal Blythcliffe private forest, protected by a conservation order and containing many spectacular examples of native trees and plants - some trees are hundreds of years old. We will be happy to guide your bush walk, next to the Balguerie Stream as it tumbles over its rocky bed, feed our tame Native long finned eels and marvel at the song and antics of the native Wood Pigeons, Fantails, Bell Birds and Wax Eyes. Picnic lunches are available upon request, extra charges apply. ... more   less
