I recommend getting off the grid & staying at the Bio Shelter. Ivan is a friendly host & the atmosphere is unique & relaxed. You can learn about his environmental friendly way of life, recycling, and green energy. Walking distance to Palm Beach & Oneroa.

Bioshelter backpackers is a unique accommodation in the middle of Waiheke. The most unique thing about this place is Ivan, the owner, and the fact that this place is built with just his own two hands over some 20 odd years with least use of machinery, including plumbing, electricals etc. Architecture makes you wonder how these curved walls and rounded...

This hostel has a very unique atmoshpere, all the people staying there were laid back and super chill and friendly. The house is surrounded by greenery and gets lots of morning sun. There was also a mountain bike I got to use for free which was great. It feels more like staying at your grandfather's country house than staying at...

Thanks for your review, i will pass on the info to the owner. In regards to the general area, you may have noticed there is almost one acre of Native Bush complete with stream and a pathway through it, as part of the property. Also you can walk from Oneroa (the village) all the way round the coast to Palm...

I spent in Bioshelter for 4 months in summer 2015, I had the best time and summer of my life. The hostel is kinda build in a way that everything is happening in the lounge kitchen area and you can't avoid but to socialise and met new people. Ivan is such a lovely helpful person always up for a good...

This house will ever be home and the setting for the best time in my life. If you are in New Zealand you should go to Waiheke and if you go to Waiheke you should go to Bio-Shelter. It brings all the ecological perceptions of humanity in one place together - combined with art and extraordinary architecture. The owner is...

I booked to stay here for the weekend because it looked interesting and unusual. Having stayed at loads of hostels before, across Europe and another on Waiheke, my expectations were realistic. I wasn't expecting The Ritz. I paid $100 per night for the 'Red Buddha' room which is a private room. The communal areas were cramped, dated and tired and...

Hi Victoria, sorry to hear you were unhappy with the cleanliness of the accomodation. Because we are Eco conscious at Bioshelter all the bedding is purchased second hand, but is always freshly laundered. A commercial cleaner comes in on Fridays to do cleaning. A couple of things regarding your criticism though, firstly the ash tray 'outside' your room on the...

The perfect place to get in touch with nature! Me and my boyfriend stayed in the tower room with a great view from the top of the hostel. It's an amazing house totally bio-designed and built by Ivan, its owner, who is also a lovely man. You will love to hear the stories he has to tell. Bioshelter gives you...

My two girlfriends from Ireland and Norway were visiting New Zealand and we decided for a weekend to Waiheke. The building had character, i wont dispute that, however in all my years of traveling around New Zealand and Europe i have never come across a more unprofessional and disrespectful owner/ operator of a hostel and i have paid much cheap,...

Hi there, i'm sorry your experience was so negative. However i think your criticism is unfounded, incerdibly rude and borderline malicious. When you arrived, you are correct the owner 'was' over the stove cooking his dinner. These things happen. It's called bad timing. In the meantime a long term guest was kind enough to show you the facilities. It was...
