Detailed Reviews
I have been to Cuba many many times so I will be totally honest with this review with the pros and cons. We stayed for 10 days. We all know you don’t go to Cuba for the food. The ala carts all were amazing and very tasty! The beach restaurant for lunch was our go to for the entire stay. Amazing burgers and fish choices. We mostly ate breakfast at the pool restaurant, just your basic bacon and eggs and toast. We mostly tried to stay away from the buffet as majority of the food was cold or barely warm. They had tons of juices , but orange juice towards the last part of our stay was hard to come by. I would advise to have your food cooked for you at buffet if you want it hot. Such as the pasta bar or the lovely gentleman who had a wide variety of chicken fish pork or beef that can be cooked for you on the spot. If they got the buffet tray heating situation fixed it would be great! Bread is amazing and staff our out of this world! The rooms are huge and spacious we were located in block 40 which was half way between the main lobby and the pool which was the perfect location! We were located on main floor but our room was extremely smelly and had to put towels over the drains as it had a sewer smell. We brought candles as we know from personal experience that it can be musty but didn’t bring enough. The maids cleaned our room fantastic everyday. Our room was stocked amazing with beer and plenty of bottled water which was a plus! We got free WiFi for use at lobby area and pool area which was awesome as usually in Cuba you have to pay for it. There were tons of washrooms around the resort and they were all very clean. Pool was great and getting chairs wasn’t an issue! The towels are already in your room so that was a plus! They could more lighting on path ways at night seems like a lot of the bulbs were out and it can be very dark.
We didn’t go in the ocean much as the weather was really windy and the beach was red flagged the whole time we were there . When we did go in we walked down the the other resort as their beach was sandier . We brought our snorkeling equipment but sadly didn’t get to use it, we heard snorkeling is great here.
This resort has a very natural eco environment which we loved , mountains, nature walks and great views not just your typical flat beach atmosphere.

We stayed 4 days from Jan 4-8th, and this place is amazing, wish we had stayed for at least a week. We upgraded to royal service, but did eat down at the buffet the first night and spent some time at the pool and beach below, found the entire property lovely and the food at the buffet was very good, we were impressed! We ate at the Japanese one night and the restaurant at the Royal side twice, and both are excellent. Overall, the food at this resort is very good, best we've ever had in Cuba. Had a couples massage at the spa, would highly recommend. The rooms are beautiful (LOVED the outdoor shower), the grounds well maintained, really enjoyed walking around exploring. Finally, the staff and service are outstanding. Appreciated having the butler service and being able to easily have them book things, etc., but honestly, the workers we encountered anywhere on the resort were just wonderful. Osmany down at the pool bar, and Yudith at the Royal service bar were particularly lovely, really enjoyed our conversations. Our maid at room 8811 was excellent. It's easy to see why there are so many repeat visitors here, we will be among them in the future. Can't wait to come back with our entire family, thank you for a wonderful holiday! Final note, Sunwing leaves a bit to be desired, I would go Air Transat next time if possible. On the flight down the seats were TINY, flight back was a bit better. No in-flight entertainment or app, so make sure to take a book or iPad. In addition, I would be tempted to pay the bit extra for VIP at the airport, because on the return flight, the airport is crazy (which is typical there). LONG lines for check in and customs and you have no control over when you get there if your transfers are included in your holiday package. Would have been worth it to avoid the chaos.

We enjoyed our third vacation at Paradisus Rio de Oro from Feb. 19 – 29, 2020, staying once again in a junior suite close to the main lobby and restaurant, just as we had requested. The main grounds are very well maintained and the main pool and beach areas provide a tranquil, beautiful setting. Finding a lounger to sit in either shade or sun was never a problem, even though it was peak season. Food was tasteful at all restaurants, with a large variety of choices in the main buffet restaurant. The special “returnees” dinner was well appreciated.
Most important is the warm, friendly staff who continue to make us feel so welcome. Special thanks to Lorenzo and Osmany at the swim-up pool bar for their friendly banter and ensuring we never went thirsty; Diana, Felix Miguel and Yunior for providing enthusiastic daytime activities and aquafit/aquadance classes; all hard-working staff at the main buffet, especially Yadira and Maria who always knew what we wanted before we even had a chance to order (they had our green tea and coffee ready at the right moment for our breakfast every day) and to Louis and Daniel for their friendly greetings and keeping the mini fridge in our room stocked daily. Also thanks to the rest of staff we met less frequently and don’t have names for, but all were very accommodating. One big disappointment was to find out the exceptional, long-term employee, Dixan, no longer works at Paradisus. The place doesn’t feel quite the same without Dixan’s exuberance and big, contagious smile.
Thank you for once again providing us with a “home away from home”.

We have just returned from a wonderful week at this resort. (Feb 9-16th) First thing I have to say is Thank you to Mirian Yisel Garcia Zaidivar, also the staff at this resort are all friendly and helpful. The staff working the buffet and a la carte restaurants do a very good job, along with all the staff at the resort.
I know everyone usually makes a comment about the food in Cuba, all the food we had at the resort was very good! The a la carte restaurants were some of the best we have eaten at in Cuba! The food was amazing! And service as well.
The resort is clean and tidy, the staff that looks after the grounds do a great job.
As do the beach staff, they always seem to remember where you like to sit when they are bringing your beach chairs to you.
If you are a snorkeler then this resort is for you, the reef just off the beach is amazing!!!! So make sure you bring your mask and flippers! If you don't have any, you can get them at the resort at the towel exchange.
The only negative comments I would say is, since I am not a smoker I wish there were more areas that smokers could not smoke at. maybe have an area in lobby and, beach that is smoke free. It is great smoking is not allowed in the restaurants.
There was a cart sort of thing, where you could drop off your books, once you were finished with them. Since it was outside in the cart, the books were wind blown, or if a shower would get a little damp. It would be nice to comment on having that in a different area,
We would highly recommend this resort, we will return again.
A few tips to anyone who is going. Please treat the staff with kindness and respect, they work long hours with not much pay. And remember they speak Spanish, and don't always understand what we are asking, their English is much better then our Spanish. I am speaking to us English speaking people.
Instead of money, think about taking down little gifts, toothbushes, paste, soap etc etc. These items are not easy for them to buy. Gifts are better, as they can not change loonies or toonies into their money.
Whatever resort you choose in Cuba, enjoy your stay. However this resort is one of the best!

I booked this Resort for my husband's 60th birthday surprise :) We have been here before and said we will definately be back as it is the best!
We were in the Royal Service which is absolutely amazing! When we first arrived, they had fresh snacks and 1 bottle of Rum for my husband and a bottle of their version of Baileys Caramel (theirs is actually better!) for myself. They remembered us and our favourites from 2 years ago!! Our suite did not have hot water, only luke warm. They did their best to resolve the situation, but could not get it fixed. We spoke with Taimi at the front desk, she was very professional, accomodating and even did an upgrade for us. She took the time to give us 2 upgrade options. After careful consideration as both were wonderful, we chose #7201. It was absolutely gorgeous!! We had our own little house with a beautiful back yard, pond and waterfall. We had amazing neighbours! The inside was very unique, it had an octogonal peaked ceiling, spacious bedroom with sliding doors out to the back with a small table, chairs and loungers, mini fridge stocked, plenty of storage space, beautiful whirlpool tub, separate toilet and Baeda and outdoor shower!! We had Wilmer as our Butler who was always looking out for our best needs, coming with wine, beer and a beautiful smile. He even booked my husband's dives because the activity centre was already closed. Absolute paradise!!
We had amazing food!! It did not matter if it was breakfast, luch, dinner or snacks, they were all delicious. The servers were very accomodating and always had great smiles!
The bar area was very quaint with supurb entertainment, wonderful servers and our favourite bar tender Yudith! She made the best Cuban and Spanish Coffees every morning to start our day! She was very knowledgable and shared her love for scotch, the same as my husband!
If you wanted a more lively time throughout your stay, you can always go over to the regular section. We did this occasionally, but loved the peace and quiet most of the time.
I went for a spectacular relaxation massage, it was incredible. You are also welcome to stay at the spa beach for the entire day with your partner, it was wonderful to have such a luxurious experience :)
We would like to thank the Manager for another wonderful stay, your team works well together for their clients and is a direct reflection of your Management skills.
Hopefully when this Covid19 is over, we will be back for another outstanding stay!!

The Paradisus is a Palatial resort, simply the finest we have ever visited in the Caribbean. Everything is unique in this all suite complex; from the finest and most delicious Cuban cuisine to the best entertainment and shows we've experienced outside of Vegas. The layout is premium with one of the finest beaches in the world; a complex of pools and bars ranging in style from chic to colonial. Suites are huge; the range of restaurants vast including French, Italian, Japanese, Caribbean etc.
Although there are some amazing excursions available from this convenient location I would recommend that you watch a number of the evening shows. The entertainments team which is run by Delmiss is truly exceptional; the quality of their productions and acts performing has become truly first class under her management.
6 stars every time.

We had a corner room on the 2nd floor of unit 36, it’s a great location close to the beach, pool and not too far away from the main area. Our room was large, the shower worked well. The Buffet is a buffet but get your eggs, bacon, fish, chicken cooked for you on the grill. We had amazing dinners at the Mediterranean (2x) and the international restaurant, I was delightfully impressed by the quality and variety of beef, chicken and fish. On Friday there was a beach party with a roasted pig on a spit and all the fixings. People will say you don’t go to Cuba for the food, well they have not stayed at the paradisus rio de oro resort and spa. The Entertainment was truly amazing and unbelievably high caliber, with a variety that everyone could enjoy. The bartenders at/in the pool and lobby bar were friendly and entertaining. I would recommend this hotel in to even the fussiest of persons but keep an open mind It is Cuba, enjoy the friendly people they are a wonderful culture.

This was a great vacation, but would’ve been 5 stars if smoking areas were enforced & respected.
The staff are spectacular and the accommodations were super! The food was great, for Cuba, but using less salt should be an option for us people with heart issues.
Speaking of which, we shouldn’t have be exposed to direct smoking if we choose not to. Smoking was condoned everywhere including everywhere in the lounge, pool area, pool bar, beach area, beach & pool restaurants! Even when we sat to watch entertainment in the lounge at non smoking’ tables the cigar cart guy would light up cigars & cigarettes right beside us for people! When we reported it to the bar tenders, resort customer service & Sunwing rep.,they just said nothing they can do about it if people choose to smoke in those areas & just took my room number.
Everything else was magical, but as a heart patient and not lover of smoke in my face I’m not sure if I’d go back unfortunately.

We just returned from the Paradisus and had a wonderful time! Having been there many times, this is our “go-to” place in Cuba. With Covid upon us, proper distancing, wearing of masks when required and lots of cleaning made us feel totally safe during our stay. No touching of food, utensils, etc. unless it was your own and you were seated at your table. We didn’t make the decision to travel lightly and are glad to say we felt totally comfortable at the resort. Some random thoughts and highlights: an amazing wine tasting and dinner event with Elier. The wine and the food together were delicious. Thanks to Kenia for my breakfast/lunch Spanish lesson! Lisbette, Marisol, Maria, Delmis, Luis, Yamilet, Angel, Lorenzo, always a pleasure to chat with, gracious and excellent service. Neydis, lights up the space she works in! Daritzia, our maid always a pleasure to talk to. Iraida, such a warm heart, wants to ensure we have a wonderful stay at the resort, truly a “customer service” person. Jorge, room service guy really wanted to make sure we had everything we needed in our room. I’m sure I missed a few names, sorry! The cooks at the Santa Maria nailed it when we asked for grilled calamari (instead of fried which is on the menu). OH WOW! It was amazing! We went back the next day for more. Then there’s the Four Seasons pizza at La Laguna restaurant, another item we had to go back for!
We will back back to the Paradisus again.

Me and my wife just came back from a week at Paradisus. The only blemish I could find was a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables for a few days, but I suspect that was more embargo related than anything else. Even at that, there are plenty of options to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. A must is the fish and meat station within the buffet restaurant - there were always lineups. We dined at the Japanese restaurant, El Patio and the Cuban restaurant. Of the 3, we preferred El Patio. The staff was simply amazing - everyone smiled no matter how miserable their day was and every staff member was willing to serve the clients.
We spent most of the time at the pool, but if you go to the beach, a pair of water shoes is a must. Also, walk about 150 metres down the beach where the sand and waves are the best.
We did the rum distillery and cigar tour, but both were closed so instead we were given cheap cigars and cheap rum and the meal that was included was so bad most people did not eat it. Sunwing needs to stop offering this tour!!!
What has 2 arms, 2 legs, a head and is invisible? The Sunwing rep at the departing airport. For both Montreal and Ottawa departures, there was no Sunwing rep at the Holguin airport so if any of the guests had issues or problems, no one was there to help them.
The only problems were with Sunwing - offering bad tours and not being there for the passengers leaving Holguin. The resort itself was simply amazing.

I have no idea
Not all staff speak fluent English but there are always someone close by to help out.
As to being welcome, you are no different than any other guest there (Chinese, Germans, Italians, Russians, Canadians etc).
I assume you would have entered the country under the USA guideline
"Travel to Cuba for tourist activities remains prohibited by statute. However, the Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued general licenses for 12 categories of travel" From the US Embassy in Cuba
I do not know
I know there are courts around the guest booth but I'm not sure if pickleball / tennis is what they are used for or basketball ...
