Absolutely great stay all around. Nico was extremely friendly and welcoming, he texted me ahead of time to know what time I was arriving to make sure everything was set. The location is great, walking distance to so many coffee shops, restaurants, shopping. The property is extremely well kept and clean. The bed was very comfortable. I would definitely stay there again in a future visit to DC.

My boyfriend & I stayed in the king tub room & enjoyed our stay. The room was well decorated and very comfortable. The only negative was that things (ESP the bathtub) could have been cleaner. When we arrived, I noticed lots of hair in the bottom of the bath tub. I spent about 10 minutes cleaning the bathroom using disinfectant wipes I brought with me, which I have been taking everywhere because of covid. I am thankful I brought them or we would have been bathing in someone else’s hair (Ewh!). Parking was a little frustrating because all spots around the hotel are 2 hour parking only, so be prepared to pay the hotel $50 a night for parking or move your car every 2 hours. Not the hotels fault, but something I wish I had known before arriving.

Overall, we enjoyed the hotel. It was very cute & service was good. Would recommend to a friend, as long as they improve the cleaning!!

This was the best place for a Georgetown getaway. Very walkable to shops. AMAZING deli on the corner (Stachowskis). Great breakfast every morning (pastries, fruit and coffee/tea. Try the “morning glory” muffin) and a nice little happy hour as well. The metro is about a 10 minute walk down the road but an Uber is very affordable to just about everywhere.
Service: The hotel manager, Sansy, was very kind and attentive. The entire team was welcoming!
As for the room: I don’t think I’ve ever slept on a more comfortable bed - it was to die for. The doors are quite loud, but otherwise it felt very private. We were in Queen Room 3 and it was small but sufficient. We could have used perhaps one extra drawer or shelf since we were here for several nights. We enjoyed the natural light in the room and the adorable wallpaper. I hope that this becomes our traditional spot for the holidays!

Dear Traveler, Thank you for the fantastic five star review. The butcher shop (Stachowkis) is a great place to grab a sandwich or one of their daily dinner specials - we're located a short block away. Guests do seem to love our french pastries that are delivered daily from Hawthorne Fine Breakfast Pastry. Sansy is quite popular on Tripadvisor, as he loves to engage with guests and provide exceptional service. Thank you for taking the time to share your Avery experience. We look forward to hosting you next holiday :) Kind regards, Justin

NOTE: Trip Advisor doesn't allow me to enter before December 2020. This is actually for October 2-8, 2019.

My family traveled back to Washington, DC after moving a few years before for a visit. Initially, we planned to stay at a competitor down the street by Soho coffee, but on arrival, we discovered evidence of bedbugs on the mattress. In a panic, we contacted The Avery and Sansy was overwhelmingly helpful. They had a room available and instead of jacking us with the rack rate, they gave us one of the suites at a very reasonable rate.

Overall, everyone on staff was overwhelmingly helpful and kind. From Sansy being so helpful to a couple and their small child, worn out from 12 hrs of travel and trying to recover from a hotel disaster at 8pm, to the rest of the staff and owner going out of their way to be helpful. Best service ever, full stop.

Moreover, the location is ideal. You are close enough to walk to Georgetown and Dupont Circle with its key Red Line Metro, but far enough to be in a quiet neighborhood location. There is a small 24/7 shop across the street, a great coffee shop next door, and one of DC's local legend "Stachowski's Market" for takeaway sandwiches. If you have kids, Rose Park with its huge playground is a block away.

We'll be back every few years to DC to visit folks, and we'll be staying here every time.

We love small boutique hotels where the management and staff care and where there is the desire and ability to go the extra mile. Unfortunately the Avery does not fall into this category.

The owner was quoted as saying that he wants his guests to feel that he and his staff “are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen in a relaxed setting” must have been diluted over the last 3 years. My view is that his staff should probably be looking for a career in an area other than hospitality.

On checking out I was told by the clerk that I owed $538. I gave my card and was waiting to enter my pin or sign something. Somehow or other they debited my card without me needing to authorise it. A notification came up on my phone that they had debited $688. The clerk told me it was the system and tried to explain why the system behaved this way. She refused to listen to my concerns and she refused to take responsibility for the way that the hotel had taken $150 more than she told me it was going to take. Whilst she said she was the manager and I couldn’t speak to anyone more senior. Eventually the owner did phone me and immediately confessed that I had been mistreated and that the system needed to be looked at and his staff needed some training. He behaved professionally and appropriately, I wish his staff had done the same. However, until then I had no way of knowing for sure whether I was going to be an additional $150 out of pocket.

The money was refunded but it has left a bad taste in my mouth and we will not be returning to the Avery next time we are in Washington.

Apart from this I would say it that the room we had was lovely. The bed comfortable and everything was clean. Slightly bizarrely the bedsides lights had to be turned off by the door and there was no room safe. Breakfast is included but is, in my opinion, rather basic for a hotel of this pedigree. They get a delivery of pastries each morning and they are served on a first come basis. There was some not great coffee and fruit. I think a boutique hotel could have a Nespresso machine and serve good coffee and some nice juice or even smoothies would be appreciate.

Dear Kiteperson, Thank you for taking the time to write a review from your September 2019 stay. I do remember speaking you to late last year regarding the credit card authorization, and my sincere apologies again. As a small independent business, exceeding customer service expectations is our way to battle with the big box brands. We have made some adjustments since 2019 regarding our incidental deposit authorization, and we hope for another opportunity to host you in the future. Sincerely, Justin

We stayed at the Avery in Georgetown for New Years. The room was wonderful with everything you could ask for, including a complimentary stocked fridge. The hotel also offered delicious pastries every morning with coffee and tea as well as a free happy hour every evening with beer and wine. To top it all off, the service was exceptional, Sansy was very friendly and helped us on several occasions with food suggestions, good conversation, and great tunes during happy hour. Highly recommend this nice little boutique hotel for a nice getaway.

I wouldn't say I'm fussy about guest house accommodation usually but I am undecided if I'd return here.

We had to find our check in code through a bunch of emails, nobody was around when we arrived and the same at breakfast the following morning. We weren't sure if we were to help ourselves or wait for someone or if they clean or we do after ourselves. Sometimes it's nice to be left alone but a bit more direction would have been helpful.

Our room was nice, well decorated and modern with a big shower and two sinks. It was however a luke warm / not well powered shower and you could hear machinery and other guests during the night. Take ear plugs!! They work. I could also smell 'dog' and think dog friendly places should only use a few rooms for dogs to stay in because it's more hygienic.

We liked the breakfast but there could be more choice and calling it continental is a big stretch. Hot food options and meats were not provided.

Location is fine. It's 18 minutes walk to the nearest subway. Take your trainers along.

We saw 1 guy at breakfast who was a helpful staff member and a lady on our check out day who seemed nice but also a little in her own world.

I've stayed in B&Bs, guest houses, hostels, camper vans and really posh hotels... I'd call this a guest house as is described by the title but more explanation is needed for guests before booking to stay on the websites. I like to know what's going on and we had confused faces during our stay. It needs to explain that it's a self help type of accommodation, not a 'being served' one.

Stay here if you're independent, not fussy and like walking.

Don't stay here if you're allergic to dogs, need possible 24/7 assistance or like a hot breakfast.

Hi, I am sorry we where not able to meet your expectations. I really appreciate your feedback. We are not on property 24 hours. We are on property from 6.30am till 7pm or later. We reach out to each guest on the day of arrival on the phone number provided with the booking. If there is no phone number we try to email. If the phone number is from a third party we call the third party and ask the guest to reach out to us (third party will not provide guest information). It seems you arrived when we were not on property. I am sorry we where not able to reach you during the day, otherwise you would have all the information you needed. I am glad to let you know that we extended the breakfast options. Thank you for your feedback on that. We can't serve any hot food, that is why we serve a continental breakfast. The Georgetown community has decided many years ago they did not want the subway in Georgetown. There is ample bus options in Georgetown. We have a bus stopping in front of the Poppy that will bring you to the subway. One block from the Poppy is another bus that brings you to a different station. Again I am really sorry you did not have the experience you expected and I appreciate your feedback. We can only become better with feedback like yours. If your travels lead you to DC again, please reach out to me and I will be more than happy to personally provide you the expected experience. I hope you still had a great time in Georgetown/DC. Nico

This was a great place to stay while I was in DC. I love the location and the fact that it is in Georgetown. It was a lot like staying with friends which was great. Also I can tell people that I stayed in a house down the road from Julia Child's old house. It's historical landmark, you can't miss it. Nico, the manager, is almost always around during the day and will chat with you about your trip. It's also a good way to connect with other travelers staying there, if they're up for it. Not all of them are. There are snacks, drinks, and coffee available for guests which you can help yourself to. Note, wine and beer too.

My only minor complaint was my room was one of 4 queen rooms at the top of the first set of stairs near the front door so I could hear everything. It wasn't bad but if someone came in late and clattered around and turned on the TV, I could hear them. I'd personally would go for one of the larger rooms next time. That said, the queen room is comfortable for a solo traveler.

Also, if you're going to be taking the subway while in town, there are two nearby stations about half a mile away, more or less, for each. It sounds like a quick walk but after a long day, it can be a bit of a walk. Although the one at Dupont Circle seems easier to get to.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely!

My first but not our last stay at The Avery! Managers Nico and John welcomed us as family and handled our every need. They were so pleasant and helpful. The quaint lobby was perfect for enjoying our daily continental breakfast offerings as well as evening wine and takeout. It was equipped with a large Nespresso machine with unlimited pods of coffee including Americana/flat white/cappuccino etc., an ice machine and refrigerator filled with orange juice, yogurt, milk etc. Check in and check out was seamless. The location on P street was perfect, in the middle of quiet residential Georgetown yet across the street from a neighborhood wine store, just down the street from a neighborhood pharmacy and Stachowski’s meat market where incredible sandwiches and take out offerings are abundant. DuPont Circle is a short walk to the east and the heart of Georgetown’s shopping and dining is a short walk to the west. Rose Park is an incredible park a block or so away that borders Rock Creek and is filled with walking trails, playground equipment plus tennis and basketball courts. My 6 nights at the Avery were very enjoyable! A true Georgetown gem.

This hotel is so cute and quaint. While it does not have the amenities of a large hotel such as pool and work out room, it has beautiful sitting areas around the grounds. The rooms are beautiful, modern with a touch of an old victorian style which makes it unique. It is nestled in a quiet neighborhood that is close to parks, recreation and walking trails. The staff and owner were personable and made sure all of our needs were met. They made themselves available and made sure our stay was comfortable and pleasant. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone seeking lodging in the area. It is centrally located and within a little more than a mile of all major attractions in the area.

The valet parking was $50 a night. I was there Saturday evening to Sunday morning and found metered street parking (free) about a block away from the hotel. In general, the hotel had a lot of stairs. My room was towards the back of the hotel and was up and down a bunch of staircases. The receptionist happily carried my suitcase down to the room for me after I checked in!
