We stayed here for 3 nights in a private room and although unsure at first became to love the place. The staff are all really knowledgeable and friendly and are happy to sit and chat with you and give you advice about the local and surrounding areas. The place itself is a little out the way but the metro station...

It was a great stay, we were here on a weekend and it was supposed to be 5 in our group but a someone bailed out last minute and we still got a room to ourselves =) because it was off season, the place was 1/2 empty and the perks to having less people is that we didn't have to...

Such a great place to crash for solo or travellers in pairs. Very low price! 10-15 min metro ride from the centre. Metro is opposite the hostel. Not 100% clean or private, but if you're passing through it's a great place to meet people doing the same thing. You can head down to H street behind union station for a...

There's no need to ask for directions when you leave Takoma subway station, look to the right and there it is. Absolutely ideal for subway connections throughout D.C. The place itself is extremely welcoming and cosy, the owners are full of information about the local area and D.C itself. Takoma itself is a nice place with surrounding bars and restaurants,...

The Hilltop hostel is very convenient : corner stores such as 7 Eleven are near the Hostel and the hostel is just one block from the metro station with a direct line to downtown DC . Police officers are continually present at 7 Eleven for a break .I felt safe while coming back late from downtown . The hostel is...

Shocking security -you only need to punch in a number code to get access through the front door -and there are no locks on any of the doors or lockers in the rooms, so anyone can get to your stuff. Also, ANYONE can come in the hostel through the backyard gate!! The metro is close by and the area is...

Clean hostel, you pay for what you get. I stayed for a week, 7 nights. Some of the bunk beds are shaky so you may be woken up in the middle of the night when someone climbs up onto the top bunk. Also be prepared to wait for the shower, unless you wake up early. Overall I found that the...

The Hilltop Hostel is the best place to stay in Washington DC if you're a budget traveler. This historic house is full of treasures and the backyard is awesome. I was able to make free nationwide phone calls, use the internet, do my laundry and store my luggage. Tacoma Park is a terrific neighborhood with a decent amount of shops...

Nice clean hostel, in a safe, quiet suburb. Great restaurants and cares close by. Hostel is a bit out of town but very close to the subway, which gets you all over dc, cheaply and easily. Friendly staff, would recommend to all.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Hilltop Hostel is a lovely privately owned Victorian house built in 1891 with lots of charm and character listed on the Washington D.C. register of historic buildings. We have 2 private rooms that can sleep up to 3 people. Our hostel is conveniently located across the street from the Red Line Takoma Station of the Metro system, which also happens to be 1 of the major bus hubs in DC. There is no where you can't get to from here, including Maryland and Virginia. Downtown just a short 10 minute ride on metro, with quick access to numerous tourist spots. Across the street is a lovely park great for a picnic or just laying on blanket and reading a book on a nice day with a 7-11 store next to it for 24 hr convenience that also happens to be a sub police station for a very safe suburban setting. The neighborhood has lots of unique shops, with a CVS and Post Office just blocks away for your shopping convenience. There are also many eateries from different cultures and several neighborhood pubs that serve food also for your enjoyment and relaxation. If you prefer to cook your own food in our kitchen, a grocery store is located just a short walk from the hostel. Need to do some research? Feel free to visit the library 2 blocks away for those of you that are here for internships or need to study. We have a fully stocked kitchen with all appliances, seasonings, and cookware. Our kitchen is open 24 hrs for your use. There is a public computer for those of you without laptops free to use and free wifi that works in dorm rooms and outside. A guest phone is also available for free local and long distance calls and also accepts incoming calls. Our hostel supplies linens and towels at no extra cost. Free lockers are also available, although you will need to provide your own lock. Locks are also available for purchase in our office. For your entertainment we have a TV room w/satellite service including HBO and dozens of other channels. There are plenty of games and books available for a rainy day and poker table and chips for anyone wanting to get a poker game started. Our basement provides the perfect party atmosphere with a pool table, foosball and electronic bowling game; as well as couches and satellite television for your enjoyment. Our lovely back yard is complete with horse shoe pits, deck, table and chairs, couches and a hammock where you can feel free to socialize, party or just relax.
