Located in the heart of the capital, JW Marriott Washington, DC, garners praise for its prime location, often recommended by visitors for its proximity to major attractions. While some guests commend the staff for their helpfulness, opinions on service and amenities tend to vary, with a number of travelers expressing disappointment in the dated facilities and inconsistent housekeeping. The value proposition also comes under scrutiny, with guests expecting more for their money, including modernized rooms and more attentive service.

I booked my stay at this hotel for a romantic trip with my my hubby to celebrate our anniversary. I picked this hotel because on their website they described it as category 6 hotel and I wanted a luxurious room in a nice location close to the National mall. The hotel lobby and the reception were so fancy and perfect. Even the staff greeting us were so friendly and welcoming. However, I was really disappointed with the room. I requested a room with a king bed and a bathtub, but unfortunately they could not provide that for me. I choose to use a king bed room and really was not impressed. It is very small and confined. The bathroom has no door or wall hooks to hang any clothes or towel. The shower is very small and the water pressure was so weak. The hot water takes forever to come. The toiletaries were so good, I liked using them. The view was nice but the room did not show any signs of luxury. It was very clean and the housekeeping lady did an amazing job keeping everything to the standards. The hotel does not have a pool, so keep that in mind but I was not looking for that anyway. The elevator system was strange and really confusing, did not like it at all.
We tried the breakfast buffet and it was really good with great options and everything tasted delicious.
The location is perfect if you plan to do site seeing and explore the historic city. This hotel is good for a business trip but not for a romantic gateway.

Arriving in Washington, DC this property is close to the airport and it’s an inexpensive taxi ride. The location is excellent if you wanted to visit the major tourist attractions like the Washington Monument, US Capitol, Lincoln Memorial, White House, and both the National Museum of African American History & Culture, and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. All of those are within walking distance if you like walking or a short Uber ride. US Capitol Update: Fences were taken down but you still could not go into the US Capitol at the time of this writing. Tip: Rent bikes and tour the National Mall on 2 wheels!

The front desk was friendly and professional. They immediately recognized my Bonvoy Gold Elite membership and upgraded us to the 9th floor with a great view of Pennsylvania Ave and the surrounding Federal buildings. They also was very courteous regarding my late checkout request.

The room was standard size with 2 double beds, table, lounge chair, and HDTV. The bathroom was standard size with bathtub and great shower. The beds were comfortable and the pillows a little soft and frumpy.

The hotel is walking distance to a good selection of restaurants from kid friendly to formal. During our stay they had blocked off the adjacent hotel for an important dignitary visit. The Metro station was a less than 10 minute walk which you can easily take to go anywhere in the city.

At the time of our stay, the most amenities like the 1331 Bar was open, and the cafe was available for breakfast. There was even a Starbucks at the lobby… :)

OverallI would recommend staying here especially if you are traveling with kids that are ready to enjoy what Washington, DC had to offer from an educational perspective.

This was my 3rd time at the JW Marriott and I want to thank Carlos the Check In Agent for a kind welcome and a full explanation of available amenities during COVID. He noticed that this was my 3rd stay and placed my husband and I into a room on the 9th floor with a very nice view of the DC skyline. Thank you Carlos! Due to COVID the rooms have been stripped down a bit. You won't find the usual bed covers, decorative pillows, slippers, things to read, note paper or pens. There are no drinking glasses or even plastic cups, though it was pleasing to find that the room was very clean and the TV remote had a plastic covering. The housekeeping staff was great and ensured that towels were changed daily and all surfaces were sanitized. The hotel restaurant was closed though there are many options for breakfast and dinner within walking distance.

Not the standard I’ve come to expect from one of Marriott’s high end brands. As a lifetime titanium Marriott members I’ve stayed in my fair share of JW hotels and this was not the experience I’ve come to expect - it was more akin to a Fairfield Inn. No toiletries in the bathroom, phone in room did not work, hair in shower. Front desk staff were dismissive when asking for shampoo and toiletries when none were in the room. It is not worth the premium to other Marriotts in the Washington DC area.

Dear F1833PKrobertl, Thank you for your unwavering commitment and loyalty to the Marriott brands as a Titanium Elite Bonvoy member. It is deeply disappointing to know that we failed to meet the high standards that we hold ourselves to, and we sincerely apologize for not meeting your expectations. Elevated caring service and attention to craft and detail is a hallmark of the experience that we strive to provide, so we are disheartened that we delivered a less than stellar stay. Your comments will be shared with our associates as a teaching tool to ensure we are better prepared to provide seamless hospitality for our future guests. It was our pleasure to have you as our guest, and we truly hope you will afford us a future occasion to regain your trust. Best Regards, Dwayne Skeete Front Office Manager

This was our first trip to DC and first time at a JW Marriott. We paid an average of $500 a night for a monument view guest room. I will begin with the pros of this hotel.

PROS: The monument view was excellent. The 10th floor gave us an awesome sight of the city and it was enjoyable. Beds and sheets were very comfortable. The location of the hotel is extremely convenient since it is center of everything. The one time we had room service, it was delicious. Front desk was nice and accommodating.

CONS: WiFi is only free to Marriott members, despite their extremely high rates. A burger and fries from room service was $17. The air conditioning would not keep the room cool. We tried many efforts to cool off but we were always burning up in the hotel. The rooms were smaller than expected and the bathroom was quite small. Although unimportant, the bathroom tub, shower, and tile were not what would be considered luxurious for a high-end hotel. It should be updated. Only two 4 oz. bottles of drinking water were provided in room. There was no microwave in the room which is an obvious attempt to make guests order room service for all their meals. We traveled to DC during the Stop The Steal/Jan 6 events. When the mayor forced a curfew on January 6, the security of the hotel was forceful, rude, and tyrannical. One guest was thrown into the street, my wife was forcibly grabbed and yanked inside by a security guard, and later on they threatened to lock guests outside. We were boisterously yelled at for confronting the security guards for this treatment and were threatened with eviction by them. Many guests were left hungry in the lobby since they shut down their market and room service during the curfew. No one could get food since the city was shut down and the hotel would not provide any hospitality or source of food or refreshments during the night. Countless times people told us they were hungry. The next morning, they had no food for sale at their market either. We could not eat breakfast at the hotel that day. Their security would often walk by to tell us we were not allowed to eat or drink anything in the lobby. The whole place felt like a prison. Do not count on this hotel to take care of guests during a crisis.

If you are a Platinum Elite or higher then do not stay here unless you have no other choice. There is no breakfast, the exec lounge is closed, and on top of that, they have decided FOR YOU that you will take the 1,000 points welcome gift and that YOU WILL take 1,000 points per night for having no lounge. In order to get breakfast here expect to pay $$$$ so those point values are actually putting you in the negative. Additionally, rooms are small and be prepared to not recieve an upgrade.

I've been Platinum for over 6 years now, and this is just sad. When a "name brand" business can't fulfill what is required, they should be willing to go above and beyond to make up for it. Not offer less just to save a few dollars. In the end, all your loyal Marriott people will stop coming here, and rooms will be filled with customers that don't care how they leave the room...making every single room more expensive to clean.

Full disclosure, after calling for 2 managers and pulling up the benefits on my phone, I was given $10 a day credit (which I was owed anyways) and $100 credit for the lounge being closed (which was also owed to me based on the rules of Marriott). Now I'm stuck paying ~20$pp per day for breakfast for 4 days.

Courtyard or Residence Inn never sounded as appealing as it does now.

My husband and I just returned from a two-night stay at the JW Marriott Washington, D.C. We received a reduced rate due to membership with AAA. Museum has a great location near the White House and close to some great museums such as the National African American History and Culture Museum and the American History Museum. We are Marriott Platinum members so we had access to the concierge lounge. Breakfast was great but evening snacks and desserts were very minimal and unappetizing. I have been to a number of concierge lounges and Marriott can do better with this. Hotel was clean, modern, and very comfortable. Valet parking was $63 a night, so calculate this in if you need to park a car. Cabs are readily available. The city bikes are also available and have racks nearby. We did that once and it was very fun! Great choice of hotel for DC!

Hotel and the rooms were very clean. Beds were a double mattress so if you are a family of four, like we were, you will find the sleeping space quite tight. Queen mattresses really do make a difference if you have party of 4 and if you are big or tall family, you better book 2 rooms or look elsewhere. Bedding and mattress comfortable and shower had excellent pressure. Location was perfect.

Breakfast/lunch tip: There is a Starbucks (over priced) in the hotel but go to the corner bakery right outside of the hotel to get breakfast or lunch.

Free bottled water tip- the hotel gym on the first or second floor offers free bottled water. The gym was also nicely equipped. Make a pit stop to grab bottled water before making your daily excursions out in the city.

Parking tip- book your parking (no in/out) at spothero.com. For 2 nights, we were able to park for $40, much cheaper than parking at the hotel and garage lot was only 2 blocks from the hotel.

Hotel exercised covid precautions. Need to mask up (hotel provides masks if it breaks or you forgot yours).

Our family stayed here on a Saturday night on our way North. After a soul-crushing traffic jam on I-95 it was a relief to get into the City. The parking garage was very easy to find (it's the National Theater garage), and it was easy to get to the hotel lobby from the Garage. They aren't doing valet parking, they are offering self parking for $20 a night.

The desk agent was AMAZING. Very friendly, polite, professional, and helpful. I asked if any upgrades were available (I'm somewhere in the Marriott status hierarchy. Whatever the one below Titanium is. I'm also Diamond Hilton and whatever the 2nd tier at Hyatt is.) She said not much was available, they were at 95% capacity. But she found an Ambassador Suite on the 7th floor. The view you see in the Trip Advisor pictures? That was our view. We had balcony access.

The room was large, it had a Murphy bed that was actually very comfy! And the location! I've parked at the WTC parking garage across Pennsylvania Avenue many times and never realized there was a hotel right here.

We went to sleep and woke up with a view of the Washington Monument.

We were able to order room service for dinner after a walk on the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial. We got a couple of pizzas (one gluten free) and they were delivered very quickly and were delicious.

The Hotel gave us two $25 food credits for Saturday and Sunday. Breakfast was two omelets and a bagel for the kid, ended up costing $8.00 for both meals after the credits.

As someone who has been living in hotels for the last few years for work, I can't recommend this hotel enough. 5 enthusiastic Trip Advisor green dots from this family.

Fantastic stay at the JW Marriott in DC. This has to be one of the best choices for a stay in DC and my room was remarkably quiet, and I had a view of all 3 monuments- the Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. What made the stay so special was the staff. I especially wanted to give a shout out to Hiwot at the front desk and Segenet at the restaurant lounge and all of the other great people that work there.
