We went to Washington DC for 4 days during spring break, and debated between staying at the Conrad and taking advantage of their Sakura dining plan or staying at the River Inn.  In the end we decided on the River Inn because of its excellent rate, reasonable parking fees and the fact that the hotel does not charge extra to bring our dog, and it was a perfect choice for our family.  Hotel was immaculately clean, charming, and so close and convenient to everything. We were able to walk everywhere including restaurants, Whole Foods, the National Mall and the White House, and took good advantage of the kitchen in our room with a full size refrigerator. Both the bed and the sofa bed was comfortable and the bathroom was compact but clean and efficient. But this is what took this hotel to the next level, for us - Will at the front desk was so friendly and kind, and went above and beyond with his customer service (we had issues with Expedia.com and for checking out earlier for one of the two rooms we booked). Also, the cleaning staff on the 2nd floor were so nice and friendly always greeting guests with a smile. My 8 year old son loved saying hi to Will whenever he was at the front desk and looked forward to seeing him every day. I cannot recommend this hotel enough and we are already planning our trip to DC again for the summer at my son's insistence that we go back to the River Inn.

Spent one night in DC and needed a hotel that could accomodate our two dogs. We have never stayed in a pet friendly hotel before and I was nervous about cleanliness, noise, etc....The River Inn was an excellent choice and surpassed any/all of my expectations. The Foggy Bottom neighborhood is very nice - lovely row houses mixed in with high rise buildings - an easy, safe, quiet neighborhood. There were several small parks just blocks from The River Inn that were perfect for our dogs. The hotel was very quiet. Very, very clean and the rooms were spacious. I believe the property is a converted apartment building so the rooms are quite large. Our room had a queen bed, sofa, desk, large modern bathroom and a kitchen complete with microwave, full refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker and utensils. There is a restaurant/bar in the hotel but it was still closed (I assume due to COVID) but there was coffee/tea available in the lobby throughout the day. I saw three dogs during our stay and they were adorable. I never heard any barking or noise at all and the entire property is very, very clean (which was my biggest concern with a pet friendly property.) The staff couldn't have been nicer. From my initial phone call to inquire about the property, to the time we checked out, the staff was pleasant and helpful. Deja, Will and Ashlee at the front desk do a great job of making the guests feel welcome right from the start! So happy we found The River Inn and can't wait to come back (with our dogs) for a longer stay. Thanks so much for a great visit!

I would definitely stay here again. Hotel is very conveniently located: an 8 minute walk to the Foggy Bottom metro station (and then 10 min ride to the center of the National Mall). There's a Whole Foods just a block from this metro station. Hotel is also two blocks from a Trader Joes and a 15 minute walk from Georgetown. All rooms have a full kitchen (fridge + freezer, stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker). Surrounding the hotel is a quiet residential area in a historic district. It's about a 15 min cab ride (without traffic) from DCA Reagan airport and 45 min cab ride (without traffic) to IAD Dulles airport. The cab ride to Dulles was about $75 (but flights to Dulles were less expensive than to Reagan).
Very friendly and helpful service too. Brandy and Bettina at the front desk were so forthcoming with tips for our visit, reserving cabs for us, recommending restaurants, etc. The valet, Mr. B was also so congenial and helpful. I felt like they really wanted to be as helpful as they could be. If we needed anything for the room (fresh towels, kleenex, paper towels for kitchen, etc), we just called the desk and items were delivered in just a few minutes, even at 10pm. One note: the central heating wasn't running (maybe because it was spring?), but we hit a cold spell of 40 degrees in mid-May so they provided us with a space heater which worked pretty well even in the large king bedroom suite.

I understand COVid19 challenges business practice in hotels and restaurants. I stayed 3 nights @ River Inn/ Modus because of its location. We had to travel. My daughter was returning to the Foggy Bottom campus. Less customers can’t be a burden to staff because there’s less to do. But River Inn does the utmost minimum.

1. I know it’s humid in DC, but walking on the floors w/ bare feet was cringing. I washed the 2 mugs before use because they had unknown stains. I did not use the bathroom glasses. The forced air vent grills are clinging w/ dust balls. Do you think your guests don’t look up & notice. There is one outlet in the kitchen for appliances. I have to decide to unplug the microwave or toaster or Keurig machine.
2. No luggage ramp up/ down the front steps. The outside lavender chairs were stacked & chain locked. The outside area is probably a best use during this pandemic, better than the lobby.
3. The building was a former apartment house and the floor plans are manageable but furniture placement is awkward. I paid your lowest price during this pandemic and I would pay full market price after pandemic, only because of location proximity.
4. A much needed makeover at River Inn would resolve the discomfort I felt. It won’t be much longer to getaway w/ the conditions of this room. That bathroom is a nightmare. Between the dusty vent, old dingy hardware & sloppy tub caulking...SAD. On Sunday morning @ 10AM, I took a shower in COLD water. It lasted 48 seconds.
5. I vowed no review but, here it is. I feel sorry for the misery of River Inn/ Modus. The hotel needs care & the staff are doing their best to work with what they have. It’s not the pandemic that’s causing the lack of good recommendations.
6. My best takeaway on River Inn are the tiny green tree lights outside, fronting the facade. At night, it was easier to tell the taxi where to stop.

My family and I stayed at The River Inn while moving our child into her dorm at GW in the Foggy Bottom Neighborhood of Washington, DC. The hotel is on a charming street just 2 blocks from busy GW Hospital, the Metro and the GW campus. It is an oasis in the city with views of the treetops. First, I have to give a shout out to the amazing staff! Brandie is a manager and checked us in, remembered us each time we walked in and was just 200% helpful in every way. Diego is also at the front desk and he is awesome. He knows DC and had not only the best personality but a ton of good recommendations. Emmanuel took care of our car and luggage. He is wonderful and had no problem with us as we took our car in and out over and over.
We stayed in a one bedroom hotel room with 2 double beds (Room 202) facing 25th street. The room was spotless upon arrival. It was so quiet and had a ton of space. The separate bedroom had incredibly comfortable and are akin to the Westin Heavenly bed. There is a huge living room with a dining table in an L shape. There is also a desk should one need to work from the room. The wifi was excellent and free. Across from the desk is a galley kitchen which was well stocked, the fridge was clean, a Keurig with coffee pods and tea is provided however the lounge area in the lobby has muffins and croissants, coffee and tea everyday from 7-11 at no cost. The restaurant is not yet open post Covid but we were told it would soon reopen. This said, who cares?! Coffee, tea and pastry items? What else does one need in the morning? In Washington, there are a gazillion places to eat. I saw that people on trip advisor left reviews that the $50 a day parking fee is excessive. Not only is it reasonable for Washington, but you can come in and out as you please which is amazing! Every parking garage has no in and out so you pay full freight every time! We drove to Georgetown, to dinner near Capital Hill and to drive our child’s dorm contents to her new home. An Uber alone would be over $100 with the driving we did around the District.
The River Inn is safe (one’s room key is necessary to get up the elevator) and very reasonable especially in light of all that is provided. The nicest part of our stay however was the wonderful staff! Thank you to all! We will be back again and again.

My husband and I spent four nights, and we'll definitely come back again. The location is great - two blocks from the Foggy Bottom metro, a 10 minute walk to the Kennedy Center, and two great grocery stores within 2-3 blocks! The one-bedroom apartment we had was a wonderful space. The bed was the best we've ever had, and most importantly it was so quiet (except for planes flying, which are unavoidable in DC). I highly recommend this jewel of a hotel.

I had a very comfortable stay at The River Inn in July 2022. Everyone who worked there was extremely friendly, helpful and kind whether helping me obtain a few additional hangers, a pen, or arranging to extend my stay. The shower head was luxurious. I was pleased to have a room with a kitchen (as advertised) which makes longer stays far more comfortable (and affordable). Basic cookware, soap and sponge, and plates/forks etc were available (no oil, salt, pepper or cutting board). It's a five min walk from a grocery store (and access to the paths by the Potomac as well as the beautiful grounds of the Kennedy Center are definite perks). I was delighted to learn the hotel also has bikes (with helmets and locks) available for free to guests (first come, first served), laundry and free breakfast. Dogs are allowed so I think I got lucky staying on a floor that didn't have any barking...not a given. I'd definitely return.

The River Inn is located on a residential street within an easy to moderate walk of many places of interest: Watergate and the Kennedy Center, Georgetown, the Lincoln Memorial (and other Memorials on the Mall),and about a mile and a half to the White House. It is close to GWU, where there is a Metro station as well. Our suite was very spacious, like a small apartment, although its "Potomac view" was in the bedroom and quite limited. There were some quirks and small issues: it took hot water a long time to get warm, some of the faucets were set up opposite the usual way and tricky to shut off completely, and on Sunday when we returned at 4 PM, our room had not yet been made up and it took two calls to guest services to get someone up to take care of it. On the other hand, there was excellent maid service, much more thorough than often found in extended stay hotels, on the other days. All in all, the positives far outweighed the negatives.

The River Inn was convenient to grocery stores, GW hospital, and public transportation. However, The best thing about the River Inn was the kind hospitality of Adrienne. She always greeted me with a bright, warm and cheerful smile. She went out of her way to help me with several computer glitches, printing a document and other things I need or wanted such as rubber gloves and a broom to sweep my suite, She even took the time to hand write personal thank you notes to guests which I still have on my dresser. She is truly a natural hospitality person.

I ended up at The River Inn after COVID 19 forced the closing of the Avenue Suites-which was a more lavish hotel so my opinion is based on the amenities there.

The hotel itself had smart pictures of pop stars such as Diana Ross and others; however, there was no heat in the bathroom so I could not take a tub bath and the heat in the bedroom was problematic as well. The beds were very comfortable.

Kitchen was equipped with store top burners but heat was uneven--too hot and not warm enough at times. Would had preferred an oven.

It was great to have a laundry room. We even received free detergent too.

I cannot say enough great things about this hotel. The location is fantastic - 2 blocks from Foggy Bottom metro, 2 blocks from a Trader Joe’s, close proximity to GWU and the Kennedy Center, and on a quiet tree lined street. The staff were second to none. They clearly take pride in outstanding service and presentation. They were honestly the nicest and happiest people I have ever encountered in the hotel industry. Jada at the front desk was especially warm and helpful. The full service cleaning of room even included them washing our dishes we had in the sink. It was unexpected and fantastic. The room (queen studio suite) was spacious, had a separate mirrored area outside of the bathroom, bathroom with tub and rain shower head, a couch, desk, kitchenette (with a few pots/pans/dishes/microwave/full size refrigerator), tv, and a very comfortable bed with nice bedding. This definitely won’t be our last stay at this treasure of a hotel!
