We had a great stay at Sapphire Beach Resort on Ambergris Caye. Everyone there was very friendly and accommodating! If you’re looking for a place to relax, with beautiful views, you can’t go wrong with this place. It’s secluded, several miles north of San Pedro, but quiet with close proximity to the reef. It’s like living on a tropical island!

I debated back and forth about doing this review because I try to live by: if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all. But people spend so much time and money on the perfect vacation and I think people should really understand the risk of choosing to stay here. Complete transparency sargassum was awful while we were here, really tried to separate that out because it can’t be controlled but it literally permeated and ruined our time here. The beach here is probably gorgeous without it and if you want a quiet get away and get lucky with timing it would probably be much better. However even without the sargassum this is not a 4 star resort like google would lead you to believe it is. The pictures were probably taken in it’s heyday and that is not the current condition. Roofs and pools are showing their age. One kayak that we were warned would sink, 2 paddle boards, not able to use because sargassum was so far out and choppy water. As I understand it each unit is individually owned so I’m guessing some units are nicer than others. Ours was very basic and had a super uncomfortable futon and bed. Again not even close to 4 star. We couldn’t go outside because of the overwhelming sewage smell due to sargassum. On top of the smell even a quick dash outside earned you multiple sandfly bites, bug spray did not at all deter. We spent a lot of time watching Netflix on the uncomfortable futon or planning how to escape. Because you are so far from town escaping is not an easy task. Here’s where we escaped to: Day 1 took the loooong bumpy drive out to secret beach. Secret beach is amazing but really long drive and expensive. Day 2 snorkeling-1 positive is you are about a 5 min boat ride to Mexican rocks-saw AMAZING creatures and coral! Day 3- Costa Blu- ate at their restaurant and used their pool. They have a sea wall instead of beach so no sargassum smell AND no sandflies, did not use bug spray there. Personally I would not choose to stay here again. I would’ve been devastated if this had been the only beach stay of our vacation.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry we did not meet your expectations. Our goal is always to try and give each guests the best vacation possible, and it seems we did not on this occasion. We advertise are location as out of town, it is a positive for most of our guests that stay. We are glad that you enjoyed your snorkeling trips and our great location close to the snorkeling spots and the world's second longest reef system. As you point out sargassum is out of our control, it comes in influxes that have caused issues throughout Belize, Mexico and the Caribbean for many years. Our grounds staff work tirelessly to keep the beaches clean each day, but it will still float in the water offshore, wether you have a beach or seawall. The good news is even though sargassum is unpredictable, it is not constant and sometimes we go a year without any influx. Our beaches are beautiful white sand during this time and you can swim offshore. July is during Belize's rainy season, which does bring more sandflies, some Avon skin so soft is a great way to protect yourself from these pesky things. With all Resorts and Hotels closed during the majority of 2020, due to COVID, we are all slowly opening back up in 2021 and welcoming guests back, as well as ironing out teething issues caused by the closures. We are up a running and ready to welcome back guests to our beautiful tropical location. We hope you will allow us to make it up to your in the future. We wish you and your family safe times ahead.

Sally's Villa # 11 is located in the #1 spot of all Sapphire Beach Resort. It is steps away from the beach with picture-perfect views. My husband and I rented the villa for a month as we wanted to take advantage of "work from anywhere" so we did and worked from Belize for a month in Sally's Villa. There was stable enough internet to accommodate our Zoom calls and Netflix addictions.. My husband worked from the table in the back porch looking out at the beach as I worked from the Kitchen table looking out at the beach. Our work back-drop never looked so good. The Villa Itself - Adorable, very clean, and spacious. It has a great loft for the kids to sleep in and 2 master bedrooms. A full-service kitchen, washer machine and dryer. Sapphire Beach Resort - It is not your typical resort. It felt like a condo community with 3 pools and a pool bar. The main office is an intake room, don't expect your traditional lobby. The restaurant the Gem, has a limited menu but the food was very good. The security guard and ground keepers were super nice and kept the place safe and immaculate. Location - Sapphire Beach is located on the North side of the island. Be prepared that this will take you 45-60 minutes to get to town with your Golf Cart. The roads are pretty bad. Sometimes it was fun, others it made an already timely commute worse. Most tours are from the main land and that is an hour and 45 min water taxi and when you add a 45 min Golf Cart ride you are 2.5Hrs in and your tour hasn't started. When you land from the airport in Belize City, you must take a 25 taxi to the water taxi, then the water taxi is 45min and then the golf cart ride is 45min. Keep this in mind when you are booking your flights home. Make sure you coordinate it with either the Water Taxi schedule of the inter-Island flight schedule. I have to say, with all that, I would still stay here again. I just wish I really understood the location better as I would have been better prepared. The Beach - The beaches were not what I expected of Belize. They were full of Sargasmn (seaweed). Apparently, May is the season. I am a beach person and I did not go in the water the entire month I was staying 20ft away. The smell was pretty awful at times. We sort of got used to it. The groundsman were out there from 6am - 3pm every day removing what they could. They never really won the race. However, If you took a boat just past the seaweed, the water is stunning. All in all, I have to say - I LOVED my time at Sally's place. If you have any doubts if Belize is safe. It is. I never for a second felt that it wasn't. The people are friendly and pleasant!

Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure hosting you for a month, and it seems as if you had a wonderful stay. We will pass all your positive comments onto the staff. Our location as described is 9 miles north of San Pedro, which is one of our selling points for many guests. It places us in a location that is close to snorkeling, diving and fishing. Unfortunately sargassum has been intermittently hitting Belize, Mexico and the Caribbean for many years now. It is unpredictable and as you point out when it does hit our grounds staff work tirelessly to keep it under control. The positive is that it is not always around. Most of 2020 we did not get it coming in. We have three pools to swim in and our onsite tour company which is PADI/SSI certified will take you from our dock and organize mainland tours, snorkeling, diving and fishing trips. Our resort is the perfect place to spend an extended vacation or a working vacation. We hope to welcome you back and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Iam a Travel Agent from Canada, I have traveled all over the world I can tell you Belize is beautiful and staying at Sapphire Beach Resort was excellent. First of all the drive out was fun, lots of pot holes to avoid sometimes water to avoid as well. We drove back and forth to town alot and had a great time, the more we did it the quicker we got! No room is a bad room, we had everything we needed in the room, toilet paper, everything to cook with, lots of towels, beach towels, hair dryer, full kitchen, and clean bedding. There are paddle boards and kayaks, the staff at the dive shop will help you with anything you need. The front desk staff (Jose) is amazing, reach out to him for all your questions or anything you need while there. Night security fantastic, asked us if we needed anything in a rain storm, brought us water, I looked out my window at 420 am and seen him patrolling the dock. Chef Tony and staff, excellent food ask him to cook you the catch of the day! We couldn't be happier with the resort the pools and the people. The Reef is litterally 1/4 mile away, kayak or paddle board to it, don't forget to ask the dive shop for some snokel gear! Have a great stay at Sapphire Beach and feel right at home like we did!
