Been diving the Bay Islands since 1993 but have never been to Guanaja before so I was pretty excited for this trip. The resort was awesome. Next time I go I think I'll stay for two weeks instead of just one. The resort is just like you see in the pictures. You can't go wrong with any of the rooms.... More

I was here for two weeks. The diving was great. The food was good and the staff was excellent. In two weeks, I didn't see any other dive boats. Don't let the steps keep you away as they aren't a problem. In fact, there is a ramp and you can avoid the steps if necessary.

We just left ( sadly) from Dunbar rock this morning. I could not wait to put in a review since I was simply amazed by the staff and experience. Having tried our fair share of dive resorts, I simply believe this one tops the list. The dive staff was the best I've seen, and Reynel ( the best guide ever... More

Do not let the extra plane ride and boat ride sway you from getting here. The villa, located on its own Rock has a constant breeze, so not many bugs. The rooms are nicely appointed, spacious, terrific views, balconies, very comfortable beds, nice bathrooms, some with double showers. The rooms are set up for the diver in mind. The staff... More

Every aspect of the Villa on Dunbar Rock was exceptional. You could have those beautiful sunrises and sunsets from an amazing villa surrounding by breathtaking water anywhere, but you can't always find service from the heart like you do at Dunbar Rock. Every person we came in contact with made our trip the best experience. I loved this place and... More

The whole experience was wonderful! Did things go wrong YES but the staff and Daniel were great!! My best suggestion would be to get an Executive Chef someone well versed in different foods. The food was ok but it could have been much better!!

We're so glad to be reading this but truly hope it will not be a "once in a lifetime" as you need to come back again! We're sorry you found the food wanting. Our chef is still relatively new, having only been with us a few months. We are working diligently on expanding his repertoire and will continue to make... More

The hot water wasn't working most of the trip. The food though sustaining was marginal. The best thing about the trip was the amazing staff. I would go back just because of them...and the spectacular diving of course. The dive crew was the best I've ever experienced in many years of diving. Thank you all.

Your group was a pleasure for the staff of Dunbar Rock to host, and we know they will be moved to read your post. Especially the dive crew - such a compliment! As mentioned in other posts, we continue to work on improving the food. Our chef is very talented when it comes to many dishes, but the focus we... More

The food was wonderful. Service was excellent. Scuba diving was great and the dive masters were very helpful. We highly recommend staying at Dunbar Rock for a great vacation and dive trip. This has to be one of our most memorable trips.

Hooray that you loved the food! We know that some members of your group were a bit disappointed in it, so it is good to know we are on the right track with the improvements we've been making. Our focus has been on cooking the cuisine of Honduras. To some guests, experiencing the cuisine of the country they are in... More

Beautiful venue offering amazing views in every direction. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The dive crew handled our gear from day one and we never had to fuss with it again! We stayed in the Penthouse and found it comfortable and private. The best part about the Villa was the daily laundry service - - I didn't come home... More

It's funny what makes an impact on us as vacationers. I never would have thought mention of our laundry service would make it into a TripAdvisor post - but it really is a special treat, isn't it? But I don't think we'll tell the staff that laundry beat out their service as being the best part of your stay :)... More

The location of the villa is beautiful: however, that is the best I have to say. Our room did not have hot water the entire week which meant cold showers after being in the hot sun the entire day. It was almost painful to shower. Speaking of water, the water pressure was so low that some mornings we were unable... More

It is always disheartening for us to find out that any part of our guests’ stay is anything less than stellar, even more so when we hear of multiple issues - both those for which we are accountable and for those that “just happen.” Hot Water: We did have one of our hot water heaters go down just before your... Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking for something new and different in the Caribbean? Then it’s time to consider the Villa on Dunbar Rock, Winner of a 2016 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Practically everything about this trip will deliver a unique experience to a destination that is closer than you think, yet still off the beaten path. Take the island of Guanaja. Of the three well-known Bay Islands, locals describe Guanaja as being what neighboring Roatan and Utila looked like some 35 years ago. The difference is obvious the minute your plane lands on the tarmac and you realize all of the passengers are being picked up by boat not by car. Good thing since there aren’t any roads leading to or from the airport! Then there’s the resort - a one-time private villa perched on a private cay with 360 view including Sandy Bay, mainland Guanaja and the island of Bonacca Town, the third world Venice that is home to the majority of the inhabitants of Guanaja. This unique resort blends beauty, serenity and something unidentifiably special in a laid-back, inviting atmosphere. The 15,000 square foot property is spread across 4 floors, complete with ten air-conditioned rooms, all with private bath and ocean front balconies. The common areas include a cozy living/dining area, 2 bars, private helicopter pad, infinity pool & indoor cardio room and a small beach area. What it doesn’t have, we are happy to say – are the sand fleas that plague many mainland and Bay Island locations. And of course, there’s the diving, the real reason you’ll want to go. Guanaja’s fringing reef is a protected marine reserve making it an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling nearly anywhere offshore the mainland. It offers a mixture of pinnacles, vertical walls, lava tunnels and wrecks including the nearby Jado Trader, one of the most sought-after wrecks in the Caribbean. Similar to the diving that made Roatan famous, except you’ll most likely have it all to yourself. Nearly all of the sites offer lively shallow terraces that are perfect for snorkelers joining the group. The resort has its own PADI/SSI dive center stocked with brand new rental equipment and three custom-designed dive boats. Diving the circumference of Dunbar Rock offers up some of the best shallow water shore diving imaginable. You'll find a mix of sand, turtle grass, concrete and natural boulders, coral heads, sea fans, squid, eels and a surprising large number of fish. Those of you who would otherwise disregard the idea of diving in 10' - 15' of water should think again when it comes to diving the parameter of our Rock. Experienced divers, adventure seekers and macro photographers all know that this is where you go to discover the weird and the wonderful! It's the kind of place a trained eye can find a 1/4 inch Heart Urchin Pea Crab, a gigantic Barracuda or the colorful Scarlet Striped Cleaner Shrimp. Unlimited tanks for diving this area are include in the dive packages, so be sure to give it a go on your next stay with us both during the day and as a dawn or night dive. Packages are available for seven night Saturday - Saturday stays including accommodations, all meals, and diving. If you define the perfect dive vacation as one including no crowds - except perhaps the one you bring with you….not having to dress for dinner, concierge dive service and a reef system you can practically call your own, it’s time to pack your bags and head to the Villa on Dunbar Rock. ... more   less
