Not too expensive hotel, with good accommodation and good food around, the market place is very near from the hotel. Lots of individual merchant will approach you as you get out for some visiting. You need a guide for sure and do not walk alone, poor security zone at night.

Room clean and quiet, but aircon pretty dire, the room kind of well used but bearable. The cafe downstairs is quite good, service quick and staff speak a fair bit of English as well, and it's sited right on the main avenue inTana not far from the spectacular station

If you are lucky enough to get a rear room, you might sleep better than one at the front of the hotel. In the morning the cleaners gathered outside one of our rooms, chatting loudly from before 7am, so no chance of a lie-in!! Breakfast seems to be attached to the hotel but isn't, this is extra. We stayed at...

Central location, though beggars and hawkers completely dominate the area so beware if you choose an outdoor table at breakfast. The building has a nice colonial feel, though it's a bit tired. The room was fine but sheets smelt like smoke. We found the wifi connection very poor compared with other hotels we stayed at in Tana. One young guy...

It's difficult to fairly review this hotel because in comparison to the city this could be about as good as it gets. The entire city was without water for all but a few minutes of the three days we were there. We had just spent a week in wet, muddy jungle conditions of northern Madagascar and a shower (hot or...

While the room was spacious enough and quiet, the water was shut off during much of our stay. During our 3 nights we had one hot shower, though it seemed to be a problem of the city itself. While we had no difficulties with mosquitos in the rain forest, Hotel de France was well stocked with the little biters. I...

Went to Poivre Vert restaurant on my last day in Madagascar and the service was good and the food was ok. (In order to identify the cashier on duty who gave me the worst service, this scenario happened on Sunday 21st Sept 2014 at 13:59). At the end of the meal, I wanted to pay by visa electron and the...

The Hotel de France, at modest prices ($80 for B & B), gives you location, corner rooms on request (103, 203, 303), and three eateries with good continental fare, especially the Poivre O for dinner. Internet connectivity is a bit of a problem, but persistence pays. For the rare English speaker, they have BBC on cable. Otherwise, you pick up...

+ great service (helped us arrange car rental in no-time), caring for tourists + ok rooms + great location + felt safe - quite expensive - breakfast not ok - restaurant food very low quality (got sick from eating their steak....), and aweful service. Don't eat in, there are so many other nice restaurants nearby.
