As of February 2017, this ashram is under completely new management. The founding guru, Swami Alasakti, has returned after spending several decades studying in India to resume her position as head of this ashram. I came here at a very dark time in my life, not looking for a luxury resort or vacation, but for a place to work through my difficulties in a structured practice. Ananda has been the perfect place for this. There are plans in the works for many improvements of the premises and in the classes offered. If you are searching for a place to live your practice for a while, this may be it.
I went for the teacher training course in 2014, it, turned out to be really great. It's extremely affordable and taught me everything I need to know to become a teacher. The food was fantastic! After thirty days I was astounded by my progression.
This is not a hotel, it's an ashram located outside of Kathmandu but it's easy to get to from the city by public bus or cab. It's nested in the valley between the Himalayas so you have stunning views. It is run by a kind, gentle and knowledgeable Guru and a yoga instructor, who is just as kind and gentle. They make sure your stay there is comfortable. It is an ashram and has a yoga program that pretty much lasts all day, although there breaks and meal times (plentiful in delicious vegetarian food). I spent 7 magical days full of bliss (Ananda is a pretty appropriate name) and cannot wait to come back! Rooms are comfortable, with their private bathrooms. It's all very basic and simple but clean and comfortable. The showers are shared and there is no warm water, if anyone cares.
I spent two weeks at the centre and would highly recommend it to others. Shivgiri and Bishwas are fantastic yoga teachers and I learnt a huge amount from them, the classes were really varied as well including mantra, asana, pranayama, and yoga nidra. The facilities at the centre are good and Shivgiri's family made really tasty traditional Nepali food for us during my stay. The surrounding areas around the centre are really beautiful - good for going on walks. I had an awesome time at the centre and hope to visit again one day!
The accommodations were clean and basic, the service was very welcoming and accommodating. The yoga class was fantastic for all levels and the place was peaceful. Great weekend getaway with spa quality food and yoga without the upscale feel of a retreat focusing on amenities. The focus is on basic need for serenity and loving people who teach yoga and meditation.
