Shambara (now Tai Derm) is a nice, reasonably priced hostel and I stayed there a few times since 2006. It is clear off but yet very close to busy Khao San Road.

Excellent location - a peace island in busy Khao San. The hostel is quite basic but very cheap and the management is helpful. Totally recommended if you're on a budget. Went there in 2010 and not in 2012 as stated.
