Reviews Summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Galle Face Hotel garners frequent commendation for its cleanliness and service, with many guests lauding the attentiveness of the staff and well-maintained facilities. However, opinions on value and noise level are mixed; some visitors find the hotel's pricing steep relative to the quality of their experience and report disturbances from social events and traffic. While the hotel's atmosphere is appreciated for its historic charm, certain areas are noted to require updates. The prime location is a highlight, offering easy access to local attractions and serene ocean views, yet room experiences vary with some guests dissatisfied with dated aspects.

Went for their buffet at Verandah Restaurant in Galle face hotel the last minute and I have to say the staff was absolutely amazing. You can actually sense how professional and experienced they are. And I specifically have to mention Mr. Dhanushka who was amazing!!! He gave us the best tour around the hotel and I would definitely come back again just for him! Just excellent!!!

We stopped in here for lunch while our taxi driver waited outside. Drinks came quickly and were nice. 30 minutes later, our food had not arrived - we only ordered a sandwich and a burger so we asked them to hurry things along. The food arrive 10 minutes later and was cold. We complained and the plates were whisked away. Another 10 minutes passsed and we said we had to go, we were prepared to pay for the drinks then vote with our feet. The food then arrived. The burger was still as cold as before but the bun and chips were hot so they had obviously not heated the burger. The contents of the chicken/egg sandwhich were cold. We were hungry so quickly ate then left. Poor service and no reflection with regards to the bill - in fact they had the audacity to add a service charge. Would not recommend this hotel restaurant at all. I think it is perhaps one of those establishments who are hanging on the coat tails of past grandeur???

Albeit with a gap of almost a decade, this was my second stay. I was not well so had to confine myself largely to the room. It had two double beds, terrific desk and an old worlde chair plus good lighting and excellent WiFi. Next was another room with a marble topped area, and then a separate shower and toilet, with a step up. Aircon worked very well. The open air dining room was not ideal as it was humid. I was not charged for multiple pieces of fruit brought to help me convalesce. Traffic noise largely ceased by 2000 hours each night. All in all an excellent stay. Certainly not 'faded glory' as some claim.

This hotel is an Asia 3 star experience with the facilities of a 4 star and listed as a 5 star. Like an arthritic old dame in an English seaside care home, the hotel very clearly is nostalgic for the Empire years, while having no capacity for self-improvement to keep up with the expectations of a modern society. The owners must be in a bind - this faded jewel can no longer price at the top rates required to fund the full renovation that this huge hulk needs. It is a vast place, with fallen ceilings on closed off staircases, odd rooms with sheets hung over the windows, and the unmistakeable whiff of mildew. The Shining vibes are real at time. So what’s good ? Beds are comfortable (but walls paper thin; corridor floorboards creak as new arrivals find their rooms at 0100). In room air con is not too loud. Wifi is competent. Breakfasts are superb. The bar is reasonably priced and offers the most reliable food (quality and service). The front desk staff are cheerful. So: three star basics done well. Add perhaps half a star for the uniformed (complete with peaked cap and shorts) patrolman on the lawns using his catapult against magpies during breakfast. But this is a hotel for whom the clock of time is ticking loudly. It appears to be full - that history continues to draw the punters. But for how long? Because, history aside and in the context of a thrusting Asian hospitality scene, it’s a bang average hotel. At best.

We had high hopes of this hotel, based in recommendations from friends. But they hadn't stayed here for many years, which turned out to be very significant. The hotel has a grand scale and facade and a super location looking out to sea. But it has not had enough maintenance over the years and this shows in rust, staining and dilapidation to the exterior, and a worn-out feel inside. From the moment of our arrival we felt let down. After a demand for our passports from reception we were left hanging around the lobby (no seats available) for 30 mins before being checked in. The room was sizeable and pleasant, but again showed its age and some basics were absent. Breakfast the next morning was a large buffet. It was not really as clean as it should have been, the range was average at best and the staff indifferent. Bizarrely, the man at the next table had his bacon snatched by a crow which flew in the window! Even the tea was not great, looking (and tasting) like it had stewed for hours. Even though breakfast was already paid for in our room rate, we went elsewhere the next day. Based on this experience, we didn't try the hotel restaurants. Finally that same evening we had to endure a really loud disco playing on the patio outside (we couldn't hear the sound on a movie we were trying to watch, despite it being on maximum volume). It did stop at 11pm but too late to rescue the movie. I'm sure many travellers would have no complaint about much of this, but this hotel presents itself as a top-class destination, and it certainly isn't.

Dear SirCR, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your recent stay at our hotel. We truly value all guest feedback as it helps us identify areas for improvement and ensure a better experience for future guests. We apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience you experienced during your stay. It is disheartening to hear that we fell short of meeting your expectations, especially given the high hopes you had based on recommendations from friends. Regarding the maintenance issues you encountered, we understand the importance of keeping our property in top condition, and we are actively working to address any areas of rust, staining, and dilapidation to maintain the grandeur of our hotel's facade. We sincerely apologize for the delay you experienced during check-in and any inconvenience caused in the lobby. Your feedback regarding the cleanliness of the breakfast buffet and the quality of our staff's service is concerning, and we will be sure to address these issues with our team to ensure they are rectified immediately. The incident with the crow during breakfast is certainly unusual and not reflective of our typical dining experience. We apologize for any disruption this may have caused and will take measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Additionally, we apologize for the disturbance caused by the loud disco on the patio. We strive to maintain a peaceful atmosphere for all our guests, and we regret that this was not the case during your stay. We appreciate your candid feedback and hope that you will consider giving us another opportunity to exceed your expectations on a future visit. If you do decide to return or if there is anything I may do for you, please don't hesitate to reach out to me directly on yohan.gunarathne@gallefacehotel.com, and will ensure that your stay is nothing short of exceptional. Warm Regards, Yohan Gunarathne Director Front Office

An excellent stay but unfortunately only for a single night after a small group tour around Sri Lanka. Would have liked to have stayed for a few more nights. So this review is based on a limited time there and I didn’t have chance to explore the facilities fully. The room was very clean, extremely spacious, furnishings and linens were of a high standard and the view across the beach and prom sublime. Only ate in The Verandah restaurant but there were a number of other choices available. Only drawback is that although the buffet was extensive and of a very high standard The Verandah is not air conditioned and can get quite hot and humid with only fans to cool you. If I had stayed longer I might have chosen to eat elsewhere. Above all the location was superb and the hotel has an old colonial charm to it so can recommend a stay here.

I have been many times to the Galle Face and it always lives up to expectations. I haven't managed to get there since Covid so I wondered if it had changed. I'm delighted the standard of service is still very good. Thank you once again for a wonderful stay.

Stayed 4 nights in this beautiful old colonial hotel overlooking Galle Face Green and the sea. We had a lovely room looking out of the front of the hotel which was meticulously maintained by Fernando who kept us well stocked with water and other amenities. Apart from the fine dining restaurant, we ate in the other 2 and used the pool bar in the afternoon as we relaxed by the big swimming pool - good places to eat & relax and across the whole hotel, the staff were wonderfully polite & helpful. For a bit of old world charm, this hotel is highly recommended and the location is superb for visiting the sights of Colombo.
