We booked a last minute break to Istanbul and stayed at this hotel - which whilst perhaps does not conform to our jaundiced idea of "tourist type" hotels - does what its says on the tin. The room was small but adequate (have stayed in similar Travel Lodge accommodation), the room was cleaned to high standard every day and the...

Booked two nights 13 and 14 October 2009. Hotel situated in a very run down area of Istanbul with several night clubs in the vicinity which appeared to be frequented only by men??? An hour after we arrived in the afternoon there was a big fight in the street right outside. During the 20 hours we stayed in the area...

on approach to the hotel, you are given a false impression. the roads are dirty, the pavements are full of people selling their wares. but inside, the hotel is very clean, and the staff were superb. when i went into my allocated room, there was a puddle of water in the bathroom. the staff had no hesitation in giving me...

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.

“My room was at the back and very quiet. Front rooms would have a better view and probably not be too noisy as the hotel is set back from the main thoroughfare.”

“Rooms are non smoking, ours had back view but was very quiet”

“The rooms are small, with a separated shower and toilet, small, but ok. Just for staying in Istanbul it can be recommended. If you shall use the room for working (writing), it is to small.”
