We were given a choice by our agent and from the reviews on other site we chose this place. The factors in favour were location and the proximity to the sea. We were not disappointed. Inspite of being near a busy locality the place was very quiet. Of course the 3 days National holidays added to this ! The room...

A nice, small hotel, located near the Grand Bazaar, on a busy road, but surprisingly the rooms are quiet (also a bit small, but clean and modern, with amenities, wifi, satellite TV, mini bar...everything you might need). The view from the roof garden (breakfast area) is spectacular. The breakfast itself is really good. Staff is polite and friendly. There is...

Nice bland hotel in busy and noisy shopping area of Istanbul. Beige room. Despite requesting a double room each and confirming this at reception upon check-in, we both got two single beds in each room. Good bathroom with great shower. Pleasant staff. Fine as a base for business or travel but not a hotel to linger in. Very clean. However...

Conveniently located 300 yards from the streetcar stop and just 2 stops from the Grand Bazar, we where pleasantly surprised by the newly remodeled hotel. Our room was on the 7th floor overlooking the fashion district and with a picturesque view over the Bosporus and the Asian side of Istanbul in the East. We enjoyed the indoor pool and sauna...

A comfortable and clean room, everything from shampoo, body lotion etc. in the bathroom, an adequate choice in the minibar, superb choice at breakfast (there were 6 or more choices of fresh fruit!) and just a few steps from the major sites of Istanbul. If you intend to do a lot of sightseeing, this is truly a hotel you should...

When you walk in the lobby to Venera Hotel there is a portrait of Lenin. That's about all you need to know about this hotel that clearly caters to Russians. Most of the TV channels are in Russian and they serve pickled beets at breakfast. The breakfast overall though was pretty good, and the view is OK. It's still a...

Staying in Fener & Balat

Neighbourhood Profile
Fener & Balat
This sleepy and rather socially conservative area of Istanbul hosts a small but thriving Jewish community, the patriarchate of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and some of the most beautiful churches and Christian art in the world. Much of what’s most interesting to witness in Fener and Balat sits between the surviving ancient city walls of Constantinople and the serene shores of the Golden Horn. Despite the many splendid sights, historic attractions, stunning vistas, and warm Turkish welcome, the area remains largely unperturbed by the tourist trade that characterizes the atmosphere in nearby Sultanahmet and around the Grand Bazaar. Travelers that like to explore off the beaten track will reap big rewards for making the effort to visit this low-key part of town.
