I stayed there over 10 years ago & it was basic but good. Now, it is SPOTLESS and tastefully decorated a la Turque. I stayed in the basement without a/c and a fan (but my own bathroom), and it was reasonable at night (and it was hot outside) . There was very little street noise. At 30euros a night you...

Having never been to Istanbul before, I have nothing to compare the Side Hotel against in terms of value for money (we paid about £61 per night in June 2010 for room 19). The hotel is quite basic, but perfectly clean and functional, although the colour scheme and lighting don’t provide much in the way of atmosphere. The rooftop terrace...

the good news: room number 9 in the pension was quite bright and cheerful. I was happy to be there. all of the people I met behind the reception desk were very nice... the bad news: ...except one, the cross-eyed, middle-aged man... I planned to settle my bill the night before an extremely early flight. He asked me to just...

stayed two nights in the side hotel and pension (we stayed in the pension side). it was a lovely pension with a room. i loved the colorful blue walls, the iron-framed bed, and an excellent bathroom/shower which rivals that of my home. the location is great (minutes from the big three must see's: blue mosque, hagia sophia, and the topkapi...

Great location, and quite comfortable rooms. In fact, the bed and shower were better than mine at home! However, I will agree with the other reviews, the front desk staff is not exactly the friendly type. They even yelled at me when there was an innocent airport shuttle mix-up! P.S. The rooftop restaurant offers only a very slight view of...

This pension cannot be faulted on the cleanliness of the rooms, the daily cleaning OR the location. It is hard to find anything positive to say about the arrogant/dismissive/unhelpful people at the front desk. Luckily I have been to Istanbul before and needed no information, but for the luckless inidviduals on their first trip, they were faced with the surly...

Our little group of educators recently spent 10 days and nights at the Side (See-Day) hotel. One of our travelmates has been coming here for many years and we see why. The rooms were nice, the staff was kind and caring, and the owner's older brother made breakfast for all guests every morning. A positive experience to be sure. We...

Hotel-Pension Side has it admirers and detractors. I am a bit of both. The location is ideal, just a short walk from Istanbul’s big three tourist attractions (Blue Mosque, Hagia Sopia, Topkapi Palace) and from the Sultanahmet tram stop (just 2USD=3TL=1.5EU from the airport by metro and tram). I booked a single room without bath, the only room category available...

We spent one night at this hotel and found it perfect for our needs. On arrival the staff was very friendly and our room was cute & cozy and very much as described on the website. Its location is within a block of the Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia & topkaki Palace. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small,...

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
