We reached Sumahan after a long taxi ride from congested Istanbul, to find a delightful and peaceful boutique hotel located on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. All very nicely appointed rooms have views on the water, with the Bosphorus bridge and Istanbul in the background. We spent three days there and fully enjoyed the local village scene and the...

We stayed for six days and were still gazing at the views along the Bosphorus at the end of our stay. Some distance from the old city and main tourist sites but the fact that you travel to the city via the hotel's own small boat makes the journey itself part of the experience - fantastic views of palaces along...

Great product & service. We liked the location, view and the sevice. Lovely room with fireplace that you can enjoy a bottle of local wine. Garden access with fantastic Bosphorus view. Ideal for people looking for peace in the center of Istanbul.

A brilliant renovation of the old family distillery.. the terrace over the Bosphorus is ridiculously exciting.. and the hotel restaurant provided us with a perfect late lunch. It is true - the effortlessly elegant and wonderfully-coiffured manager Nural can and did organise anything we needed - he would probably have let me beat him at backgammon if I had asked.....

We couldn't have chosen a better hotel if we'd tried. Nural's welcome and continuous service throughout our 4 day stay was first class, as was the service provided by all the hotel staff (including restaurant menu, wine selection, hamam and massage centre, library with books on Turkey in many languages, etc.). The reception staff were a mine of information on...

My partner and I came to Istanbul and Cappodokya for the first time in October, ending our sojourn at Sumahan for 3 nights. We stayed closer to the Old City for the first part of our trip, left for Central Turkey in the middle, and capped off a wonderful adventure, by staying here, on the Asia side, between the two...

We are a family of two adults and two teenagers. All of us were delighted to stay at the Sumahan and felt at home immediately. The trips with the boat from the hotel to downtown Istanbul were marvellous and in the evenings we were happy to come "home" with "our" boat to this peaceful and wonderful place. The duty managers...

My husband and I spent one evening at Sumahan during our Honeymoon (I wanted to stay in Asia). As other reviewers have noted, the boat ride is not at all a hassle, and actually kind of fun. The rooms at Sumahan are well appointed and afford beautiful views of the Bosphorus and the bridge that connects the Asian and European...

What a magical wonderful place. We had five days to spend exploring Istanbul in the heat of August. After a great deal of research, we set aside recommendations of lovely hotels in Sultanahmet and chose Sumahan on the Water. It is beautiful small hotel designed by its owner/architects to renovate a family owned raki distillery. What a magical wonderful place....

Staying in Uskudar

Neighbourhood Profile
Uskudar
Home to more than half a million residents, Uskudar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus is one of Istanbul’s most densely populated neighbourhoods. Once a Greek colony, later a haven for people from across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, this gateway to Asia has been an active and diverse hub for eons. Still, visitors to Uskudar are often more overcome by its myriad treasures than by its many thousand residents. And with fairytale settings such as the “Maiden’s Tower” as well as grand examples of Ottoman Era architecture, plenty of parks, a gorgeous and lengthy coastline, and some of Turkey’s holiest sites, there’s no end to the sightseeing possibilities. Easily reached from the city’s European shores via a steady network of ferries, time spent in Uskudar reveals a “real life” Istanbul that many who experience find extremely fascinating.
