Based on some of the earlier reviews and the pictures, I suspect this hotel has been renovated recently. The double room I stayed is much nicer than the pictures of rooms. Nice bathroom with a good shower, comfortable beds, spacious room. Clean. You notify housekeeping if you want your room cleaned, or don't want to be disturbed by pushing a...

Having spent 30+ hours travelling to Tibet it was nice to be greeted by the friendly staff at Shangbala. I was promptly shown to my room on the fourth floor....no lift but that's not what I'm looking for, just the carvings and brightly coloured decoration are enough to distract me. The room itself is large and accommodating for me on...

This was a wonderful hotel for those looking to be in the heart of the old Tibetan quarter of Lhasa. While the room was nothing special, the location, a few steps to the Jokang, and a nice amble to the market, I couldn't have been happier. Breakfast was okay but nothing special. But if you asked for something they tried...

While we were told hotels in Tibet would be a challenge, it was as if they went out of their way to make it uncomfortable. The hotel desperately needs an update as the building is old and dated. The carpeting in the rooms is dirty and smelled. There is no heat to speak of, and the staff insists on keeping...

After reading some reviews I was little worried about our tour company's hotel choice. The hotel and the rooms were actually quite nice and the location is excellent. The front desk was helpful and very friendly. But the restaurant staff was clueless. They could learn simple things like filling your cup without pouring warm tea all over. Not to mention...

According to our tour guide this is the best hotel in the Tibetan portion of Lhasa - the fancier hotels are in the Han portions of the city. It is near the markets (which go on and on) and is in walking distance of the Jokhang Temple and the local square. The rooms are certainly small and a little dated...

We stayed for three or four nights in May 2012. The hotel is in Old Lhasa, and within short walking distance of the Bokhara and Jokhang temple, along with other interesting sites and markets. The location can't be beat. The rooms, however, were borderline shabby, and the Chinese run hotel does not have very friendly staff. The breakfast was good....

Our guides put us up at the Shangbala for three nights. The hotel itself is a bit dated and the rooms were fairly clean. The main drawback is the noise, the rooms on one side face an alley which apparently is a stumbling pathway back from some local bars, people shouting and talking all night long. I had to use...

Good location for local markets and restaurants. Breakfast ok. The rooms weren't cleaned in the 5 days we were there and the beds simply pulled up. Mould in the bathroom and water temperature was completely cold on three of the 5 days. A pity because our Tibetan experience was excellent apart from the hotel which was old and shoddy.

We stayed here one night and had our guide move us to the Shambhala Palace. The construction around the Shambhala Palace dictated that we stay at the Shambhala on the last day of our stay to have easier access to the transportation to the airport. The second night's stay was just as bad, or worse than the first. The rooms...

“Ask for a room on the courtyard. The rooms adjoining the alley have no soundproofing to speak of and the alley has several active business and apartment dwellings that seem to have activity well inot the night.”
