The Centinela used to be a stately home visited by George IV when Puerto Octay was in its heyday. It's situated on a little island in Lago Llanquihue which is reached by road - it's an impressive drive. The rooms aren't cheap but are really amazing, historic and spacious with beautiful views across the lake. We stayed in a Cabana with wood burning stove which was quiet and secluded. The water never seemed to get really hot though [despite the hotel manager taking a look] which was hard when it was a cold morning and we hadn't worked out how to light the fire yet! Overall, worth a stay as the town is really sweet and gives a great view of historic Chile.

This is a charming little hotel in Puerto Octay, with incredible views of Llanquihue Lake & the Osorno volcano. The rooms are very large, spacious, & well-maintained. The grounds are beautifully maintained & landscaped. The hotel restaurant is large with amazing views. The staff are efficient, but not terribly friendly. The food in the restaurant is so-so. There is even a small pool & jacuzzi. Puerto Octay is a small, quaint, rustic town. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Lakes District of Chile.

This hotel was recommended by a friend who stayed here in 2005 and apparently they haven't renovated it at all - it is quite run down for the price you pay. The location itself is awesome! very isolated and with an INCREDIBLE view of Lago Llanquihue and Volcano. But we had: stained sheets, dirty floors, fireplace didn't work (gets cold at night, even in summer, and they had to come in and fix it every night), not well-equiped kitchen, problems with hot water, etc. The reception staff was not the best but the house keeping staff was very attentive. We had a high expectation of this place and were disappointed. Again, the views are great, very quiet, totally inmersed in nature but it is quite run down.

Undoubtedly the worst gastronomic experience we have had in the south of Chile. An overpriced fixed menu (CLP 15.000, US 30) offered rotten fish and meat with a cheap "tuna" salad. Service was despicable and management inexistent. We are Chileans who have visited the south for over 30 years--we will never come back here. STAY AWAY.

Unfortunately we did not check Trip Advisor before booking at this hotel due to the rave reviews in both Frommer and Fodor. What a mistake! The hotel in November 2011 was run down, dirty and poorly maintained. We booked the King's Suite well in advance and when we arrived the room was not ready. They actually lied to us, saying that we were getting the King's Suite, where the Duke of Windsor stayed. It was only when we were checking out the next morning that they admitted that we were staying in the Jr. Suite and someone else had gotten the King's Suite. We thought we were the only ones in the hotel proper; another couple we met at dinner were staying in the cabana and those were the only guests we saw. However we couldn't even see the actual King's Suite the next mornig because the people who got it were still in the room when we checked out. The pool and hot tub were dirty, and the grounds were unattractive with few flowers and dying grass. The worst was the food! The world class chef was must have been on vacation, as the food was virtually inedible. The dinner dishes were still on tables when we went to the dining room for breakfast at 8am. The staff acted like they were doing us a huge favor to light a fire in the large salon or to change a lightbulb. In sum, it was by far the worst place we stayed in Chile, and possibly the whole world. We could not believe this was the Hotel described as a landmark, famous throughout Chile.
All this for a Hotel that was reputed to be famous through Chile.

I´d have to say this place was the biggest dissapointment of our trip to Chile. We selected this hotel due to rave reviews on this site, and a Frommer´s guide book. While the location was lovely, the cabana we were to stay in was VERY run down, dirty and not at all like the website depicted. The carpet was so stained and dirty you wouldn´t want to take off your shoes, the 'deck' was missing boards and looked unsafe to stand on, with not a single stick of furniture on which to sit and enjoy the view. The main living area didn´t even have a chair - only little wooden stools and what looked to be some lumpy stuffed futons beds. I´d best describe the place as tired, dingy, and desperate for some TLC!! A real shame considering the location, and we decided to go elsewhere. While we didn´t see what the rooms in the actual hotel looked like, but if the cabana was any indication.......

Terrific place, make sure to get one of the bigger cabanas directly at the lake with a superior view (even if they charge you a bit more). The cabins are a dream and the surrounding area is just stunning. Only the food is not as good as the view.
Cheers

It is an over rated hotel. Perhaps it was a great place many years ago when the Prince of Wales stayed so many years ago. They allow buses to park in front of the hotel entrance at 6:00 am and run waiting for a group to have breakfast for 45 minutes. You can not call the front desk to complain because the phone system is outdated and if you do not know how to use it you are out of luck. They allow drunken parties to carry on at 4:00 in the morning in the lobby. When you tell the front desk about the horrible night you and your traveling companions had, the desk would not comp us the night and told us they could do nothing. The breakfast ran out of food early so if you sleep late on your vacation you are out of luck. TV is local only. The WiFi is very slow dial up. The beds were old and uncomfortable. The grounds have not been keep up. The water is very cold and no one uses the pool. Don't let the photo of the place fool you, like we were.

This hotel has a restaurant, besides it proposes some "cabanas". I did have lunch at the hotel, which is rather expensive for the complete menu (25 USD, 3 courses), even though the service is quite correct and nice.
I visited the cabanas, just being curious for a future vacation, but the price required (160 USD per day, 4 persons cabana), is absolutely overvaluated, as those are completely lacking of any maintenance, old-fashioned and not adequate to today's needs for travellers.
The swimming pool is also old.
The sightseeing from the hotel is abolutely incredibly wonderfull, with panoramis view on the lake and on three volcanos, best view ever in that part of the lake Llanquihue.
The surrounding park and beach are also beautifull.

I stayed here for just one night as part of a large group on a charity cycling trip. The view was a real highlight, looking out from the balcony of our cabin over the beautiful gardens and across the lake with the volcanoes in the distance was incredible.

The cabin itself was quite basic with a tiny bathroom, a double bedroom and a living room area with 2 single beds. It was fine for a night but I don't know what the rooms were like in the main hotel.

They provided a decent 3 course meal for us but the service was very slow and it seemed to take forever for them to bring out the main course. At least the wines were nice, between us we drank most of their stocks!

The property was looking a bit run down in places and in need of some updating and tidying up. The swimming pool was unusable and nothing like the pictures on their flyers that looked like they must have been taken 20 years ago. Sadly, this makes it hard to recommend staying here. I'm sure it would have been lovely in its day and the setting is truly amazing.
