We had a 4 night stay at the end of a 3 week tour of Chile. Probably a night or two too long. We were suprised at how big and industrial Valapraiso is. However, the location of this hotel is excellent, being close to many good bars and restaurants. We filled our time with a wine tour, a walk around the nicer parts of the city to view the street art and ride on the funiculars, chilling out at the hotel, and chatting to the delightful manager, Hector. He gave us Spanish lessons, told us where the best liquor store was, where to go and where not to go, which bus to catch for Vina Del Mar, and even brought in ingrediants to make us his own personal take on a pisco sour. The hotel is comfortable with a small roof-top terrace offering views across the city which is ideal for a pre-dinner drink, or a nightcap, or both. A nice atmosphere throughout the hotel, good bedrooms, reasonable breakfast.

Nicely situated on a side road but surrounded by bars and bistros so eating out no problem. Rooms adequate as we were only staying one night but was light and airy. Run by a manager who is very helpful and looks after your needs. Breakfast pre booked and set out for you in the morning, good for those quick and early pick-up.

Hotel Somerscales far exceeded our expectations. The room and hotel were well-appointed and spacious. A small upstairs terrace available to all guests had a wonderful panoramic view of the bay and hills, and the lower terraces were beautiful. You had a lot of interesting street art the minute you walked out of the hotel gate. The staff went above and beyond to make our visit as nice as could be. We wouldn’t think about staying anywhere else in Valparaiso.

We stayed at Somerscales for 3 nights. I was very satisfied with the quality, cleanliness, location & over all ambience of this hotel/guesthouse. It is conveniently located in the hills on a fairly quiet street. It's an easy stroll from several good restaurants & bars, and also within a fair distance of the main sites, just around the corner from some of the more famous pieces of street art. It's also easy to catch the bus from nearby if you want to visit Pablo Neruda's home. The hotel staff were welcoming and their recommendations about local places to eat in the evening were great. Each room in this hotel is unique. Ours was on the first floor (2nd floor to some), and was huge, with a view of the rooftops & partial view of the sea. At one point we wandered up to the next floor and found a weeny rooftop terrace with more extensive views. There's no aircon, but we found even in mid summer we didn't need it, preferring to simply open a window. I suppose the furnishings are antique, but not all in our room was in great nick. Our wardrobe door was stiff & bits had fallen off the desk but it was no problem. I think it worth mentioning that in places there's a certain romantic 'shabbiness' about the place, and also the decor is a bit ad hoc. It has a guesthouse feel. The sitting areas and garden were comfy and pretty and the wifi was good enough. I have no difficulty recommending this hotel. We were very happy & comfortable there & it was a wonderful place to return to each day.
