We stayed with at Casa Hostal 199 at the beginning of December. It was our first stop in Chile and could not have been a better introduction to the country. Ale, Trini and Carlos are great ambassadors. We were made extremely welcome. Trini was busy with Santiago, the latest addition to the family but Ale and Carlos went out of...

It was a relief to hear that Casa Hostal 199 has survived this year's major earthquake. The hostal provided the perfect end to our two months of travelling in South America. It is perched high on one of Valparaiso's famous hills and provides a wonderful panorama across the city and its harbour. The building is a genuine heritage item and...

Simple and basic settings but the room we stayed in (captioned) has a balcony that offers you a breathtaking view of the town and the coast line of Valparaiso, either in the day time or at night. Not a surprise considering that the hostal is right next to the view point of May 25. The still functioning funicular certainly has...

Small B&B/Hostal run by a very friendly and helpful local couple. They, and their staff, go out of their way to assist you and give you suggestions and ideas on what to do and how to do it. Located a little out of town, which was the only downfall here, but easy enough to get to, if you're patient. Taxi...

This was the nicest surpise on our visit to Valpariso, Chile to catch our cruise. The B&B (hostel is an incorrect designation) is located on a hill overlooking the commercial harbor (where our Princess cruise docked). It is opposite the top of a a finicular that takes you up the steep hill from the port. Our room was large, light,...

This is probably one of the nicest hostels that we stayed in on our two month trip. The owners were very friendly.

Spent 4 nights in Casa Hostal 199 following a lengthy early December trip from chilly Canada but the warmth of the reception from Alejandro, Trini, and Franchesco set the stage for an absolutely GREAT stay in Valpo. Being a typical business traveler (read - corporate hotels, etc) I chose to stay at B&Bs (with a degree of uncertainty on my...

I've been in Valparaiso many times. The reason I keep coming back is its architecture, the hills, the houses, the steep streets, the smell (not always great), and the people. Artilleria 199 is maybe the best kept late 1800's house to remain standing. The owners are really nice and tell the visitors all about the process of turning this old...

“I traveled there in May, that's late autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and the morning was rather fresh if not to say chilly. It is might be wiser to sacrifice a nice view from the window and ask a landside-looking room which is protected from the cool winds. I was content anyway.”
