Detailed Reviews
Stayed at the hotel recently. Exceeded expectations on every front.
Charming building in the historical part of town. Decorated in the original colonial style and colours. Short walk to all the interesting parts of town
The staff was extremely service minded. Excellent English spoken at the front desk. Everybody went out of their way to help and accommodate our wishes.
Generous and interesting breakfasts.
Rooms outfitted in the colonial style, sparkling clean.
Sophisticated restaurant that clearly stated that the menu was inspired by local Ecuadorian cuisine.
We are looking forward to return to this friendly and welcoming hotel and city.

For my money, the charming Hotel Casa del Aguila was the overwhelming winner in our latest visit to Cuenca.
The conversion of this three-story, former colonial mansion was expertly done with a loving touch. The interior, starting with a lobby/courtyard featuring a rose petal-filled fountain, is gorgeous and soothing. A second-floor salon facing the street is a wonderful place to relax and read one of the many books that can be borrowed by guests. Other public rooms, including a cubicle with computer to explore the Net, are hidden away throughout the hotel.
Our room, with its warm wall colors and soothing simplicity, was spacious and quiet with comfortable beds. The en suite bathroom was well designed, with plenty of hot water and good pressure.
Our two breakfasts there, served buffet-style in a walled courtyard filled with flowers and plants, were delicious. Eggs, meats, fruit, juice, coffee or tea, breads and rolls and, each day, something interesting to try: like the fried plantain patties one morning or the addictive, savory donuts made with yucca flour the next.
The posada is excellently situated, close to good restaurants, an easy walk to the city’s central plaza and just a couple of blocks from the Museum of Modern Art. Prices are certainly reasonable and we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

I am an American, (from NY), and it was my first visit to Cuenca. I had colleagues staying around the city in a several hotels so I had the chance to see many of the other options for accommodations. This hotel - hands down - was the best, for a variety of reasons. First of all, it's just beautiful. The ambiance is so unique and peaceful, and the furnishings were tastefully chosen for it's style. Then there's comfort. Cuenca goes in and out of cold to hot weather. It's cold a lot in the city! A hotel two blocks away that was supposed to be one of the best was freezing at night, so two of my friends ended up moving to Casa de Aguila. Then there is a living room that is the perfect place to relax. The hotel was recently renovated and the bathrooms are beautiful too. If you need Internet connection, this is another issue. This hotel had the best and most consistent wifi. Then there is the staff - who are incredibly attentive all the time. I really loved Cuenca but I especially loved Casa de Aguila.

I only stayed one night and the truth is that the hotel is nice and it filled with beautiful antique artifacts but we found the rooms super small and uncomfortable. The service was not the best upon arrival. They do not have a 24hrs receptionist and we kept getting messages that if we didn't get there by 11pm, there wouldn't be anyone to assist us. We were coming from out of town and were running late so we were pressured to rush in order to be able to have a hotel for the night. It was pretty scary to think we wouldn't have a hotel after booking and pre-paying for it.
The breakfast was ok, not the best.

I went with my family to this hotel to welcome the new year and unfortunately it was not at all what we remembered it once was. Since the hotel belongs to new owners things definitely changed for the worse. The entire hotel has only 3 girls working there. One who does the cleaning, one who prepares the breakfast and last one is at the reception. None of them have any experience or training in customer service. Every time we returned to rest from a tour during the entire day we came back and our rooms were not cleaned yet. It is very sad to see what this hotel once was vs. what it is now. We will definitely never come back. You have lost your customers.

We stayed for a week, and found our room to be small, dark, no where to hang clothes ie hooks in bathroom, one night stand for queen bed. We also had huge spaces in the door wood slats, you could see out, or in thru them! The courtyard, with early risers is noisey, sounds rise, as does when folks get back late at night, but first they ring the front doorbell, which you can hear thru the whole place, a long with the phone ringing at ths front desk. So if you like to sleep till at least 8am, or past, you might stay at a quieter place. Oh, forgot there is a rooster that starts to crow @ 4:30am every morning! The neighbors rooster!! We live here now and there are much nicer places for less, and better neighborhoods. The front desk folks and the maids however were extremely kind and polite. The breakfast modest, at best.

Dear client Thanks for your comments. It is important to know your opinion and correct these details in order to improve our service. Sometimes the issue with boutique hotels downtown city is that you can hear the noise at the courtyard. However thanks one more time for your words, and will check this item to provide a solution. Best regards, Reservations Department

Stayed here in April 2011 and loved the location, although a bit noisy due to street and other room noises. This hotel is a restored Colonial that looks fantastic. There was no TV which wasn't that big a deal, since there was little time spent in the room. Breakfast was an American style buffet that was always fresh and hot. The hotel staff was very helpful in giving directions and setting up outings. Prices of outings were very inexpensive, informative, and private in our case.
One service offered was laundry which was sent out- usually back the same day and very reasonable. We would stay there again due to the central location- Sucre is a main colonial street approx 3-4 blocks from Parque Calderon and main square.

I stayed at Casa del Aguila for two nights in February. It was suggested to me by friends. And the location definitely is perfect. Every attraction in the old town of Cuenca is within walking distance. And although the old town is rather noisy even at night, the hotel is on a quiet street.
The hotel itself is quite unusual. The building is a renovated townhouse from the 1800's. It is very authentic, so it feels like you are staying at a museum rather than a hotel. I had a single room on the second floor. And compared to other hotels in that price range it was rather basic. Furniture was sparse. No TV, no minibar, and a very 19th century mechanism to lock the door from inside. However, the bed was all 21st century and very comfortable. So was the bathroom...modern and clean. But it was cold. I arrived on the evening of a rainy day, and the electric radiator in the room just could not get the temperature up. The second night was not so bad, because the day was warm and sunny. But I suggest you bring long pajamas to Casa del Aguila.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. I felt very welcome and well taken care of. Breakfast in the morning was basic but fully satisfying. I liked Casa del Aguila. I would definitely stay there again.

This is a very nice hotel with a warm decoration, It´s an old colonial house that has been very well adapted to be a hotel. Decoration is very nice and provides a cozy athosphere . Along the rooms you have some nice spaces where you can sit, relax and chill.
Rooms and bathrooms are very clean. I recomend the higher rooms so you can have a nice view to the central room of the hotel.
Staff is very friendly.
Breakfast is good, nothing fancy but has all you need for a decent breakfast, It´s all fresh and tasty .
Location is just great. Its in downtown Cuenca where you can go our and experience all the beautifull colonial streets and arquitechture. There are very nice restaurant in the area where you go and enjoy really good food.

My wife and I stayed at this charming boutique hotel over a month ago, and I daydream of coming back. The conversion from an older mansion to hotel is exquisitely done, with numerous old artifacts on display. The desk staff is helpful for everything from advice on sightseeing to phoning for a taxi, and the kitchen-breakfast attendants are prompt and conscientious.
The common areas are delightful, from the dining courtyard area where we hung out to read, to the various lobby areas, to the museum room. The view from the upper rear outdoor balconies toward the center of town is lovely, with trees and the domes of the cathedral and another church visible in the distance. Our own room was probably the smallest (No. 15, on the rear of the top floor) and was adequate but nothing special (going by photos, most of the other rooms are larger and more nicely decorated). The maids kept the bathroom and sleeping area immaculately clean.
The street is a busy one, so it may be best to ask for a room to the rear of the building (we always use ear plugs when we travel, so traffic noise usually isn’t a problem for us personally).
There was a thunderstorm while we were there, and the rain and hail pounding on the roof tiles and the huge skylight over the center courtyard was fun to experience from the comfort of our room and the balcony (though there was a leak into a lower room that had the staff scrambling to take care of it).
We’re vegetarians, and the breakfast buffet is good with sufficient items to choose from. Guests can eat either inside or out in the attractive adjacent covered garden courtyard dining area. A nearby water dispenser is available for refilling your water bottles at any time. Aside from the included breakfast, the restaurant is open for ordering meals during limited hours. The lunch that we had there was delicious.
The little complimentary chocolate shampoo bottles are a unique item to take home as an additional reminder of the stay.
