We stayed here for one month and if we found ourselves in Cuenca again, would not hesitate to return. The location by the river is great, with some nice seating areas. It isn't right in the downtown area, but we enjoyed the walk along the river, and taxi's are cheap and plentiful if you'd prefer that. We had the unit right on the river which was nice, and also had a kitchen so we could cook.

The wifi worked most of the time from the room, but there was better coverage from the sitting area in the courtyard. This is very typical of what we experienced in other places in Ecuador as well. They do have a washing machine/dryer onsite for a fee that we found convenient (though no hot water to the washer.)

My only real complaint is that I'm one of those crazy people who like taking showers with water so hot it is almost burning. There was always hot water, but it does get chilly here so I would have liked it a bit hotter. That said, this wasn't really a problem, just more of a personal quirk, but something to be aware of if you are like me and really want to steam up the bathroom. lol

The best part of our stay though was the staff. We didn't interact a whole lot with the family (though they were around and were very friendly). But both Sara and Angelita were above and beyond friendly and really went out of their way to be helpful at the slightest opportunity. We were both very touched by their kindness. And the two old dogs are just the sweetest.

Definitely recommended, especially if you want to get away from the noise and traffic of the downtown.

My apartment was immaculate! The location is superb. Very quite, but within easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants of El Centro historical district. The best part is the hosts, Xavier and Samara are encyclopedias of hiking, climbing, canyoneering, and biking routes and activities around Southern and central Ecuador! For any visitor the location and beautiful setting is worth a stay. For the adventurous, tapping into the hosts knowledge is priceless!

We just completed a one month stay in a one bedroom apartment with a cost averaging less than $20 per day. The apartment was clean, and the daily housekeeping service kept it that way - they even did our breakfast dishes for us! The owner (Xavier) and his wife were very helpful, answering our questions and providing us with directions and tips abut the area. When we first arrived I think most all the units were occupied by people from the US and Canada. The neighbors were very helpful in getting us settled and providing us with recommendations. We were fortunate and had some very delightful people as our neighbors, and now longer term friends. Toward the end of our stay perhaps one-third of the units were occupied by Ecuadorians on holiday, and everyone was very friendly.

The location is very good, about a 15-25 minute walk along Rio TomeBamba into El Central depending upon how fast you walk and the route taken. Our unit backed up on the RioTomeBamba, which I believe is quieter than the units in front along 12 de Abril.

The beds were comfortable and they provided enough blankets that kept us more than toasty on a few cold nights. The kitchen supplies were basic. We picked up a few items at the Mercado or Supermaxi to make it easier for preparing meals, but there is enough provided to get by. The towels were ok, not JW Marriott quality, but we weren't paying Marriott prices.

There was a small TV in the apartment which had stations with shows in both English and Spanish, Wi-fi is included but it can be slow if the bandwidth is being hit by a bunch of people - same as any hotel. Hot water was ok after we learned what to expect and some of the nuances; hot water was the right handle in the kitchen and shower, and the left handle in the bathroom sink. Tankless hot water heaters are more flow-sensitive than the tanks so common in the US, and flow volume could change depending upon how many units were up and showering.

My husband and I stayed 5 nights in Jan 2012 in Otorongo. It offers the advantage of a kitchen with full size frig, 4-burner stove, and hot water in the kitchen as well as bath, plus two bedrooms, and daily cleaning service that will even wash your dishes! The complex surounds a beautiful garden with a burgeoning orchid section. The location, on the River, is about a 20-min hike the center of Cuenca. During our stay the rooms were full of ex-pats from the US and Canada, mostly an older group of very nice people.

We would certainly return.

We stayed at the Otorongo for several weeks while attending language school. The amenities were totally comfortable and just what we needed to make a home away from home. The hot showers are fabulous and the new wood floor is a plus. The location was perfect! Close enough to walk to just about everything, yet the sound of the river in the back rooms blocks out the sounds of the city. The staff is attentive and trustworthy. The long time owners are wonderful people in every way. They know a great deal about local adventures, especially opportunities for mountain biking and rock climbing in the surrounding area. I would highly recommend the Otorango to anyone considering an extended stay in Cuenca.

I stayed a month at the Torongo apartments. The family run business has a great staff that provide daily housekeeping. The lovely grounds were perfect to sit and visit with other travelers. It is a ten minute walk to the center of town. I was very appreciative of the strong Internet connection and cable T V. I was pleased with my stay; I would highly recommend it.

Just completing 6 weeks and highly recommend hotel Otorongo to all. Our stay here has been a real pleasure. The apartments(15) surround a beautiful garden for sharing experiences with other travelers. The apartments are equipped with all basic necessities and the daily service by the staff keeps them immaculate.. The location is perfect ,along the rio tomebamba, transportation is right outside the gate. (Secure at all times) It is a 10-15minute walk to El Centro and convenient to many shops and restaurants. Sharing the property with the Montezuma family is a unique insight into local family life. Xavier, our host, is delightful and full of useful information about beautiful Cuenca..We surely will return. D&P....... 2/23/13

My sisters and I stayed in 4 different lodgings on a recent trip to Ecuador. This is the only place I cannot recommend. One star might be generous, but I give it 2 because I like to emphasize the positive when I can and it does have a small very pretty garden, most of the staff greet with friendly smiles (other than the manager, Javier) and the sound of the river is nice. Issues are many. We had a contract via a booking service for $182 + 12 % vat. Immediately on our arrival on a holiday week-end Javier charged us $260 for 2 nights for our rooms, not $204 as it should be. He complained that the booking service got it wrong. We paid up, having no other choice on a holiday Sat. night. Once we experienced the moldy, dirty, ill-equpped rooms we felt very cheated. It was the only time in Ecuador when lodging managers did not exhibit honesty & an interest in our well-being and satisfaction. We felt like victims of a crime having paid 31% more than our contract stated. In the end my sister was able to diplomatically shame Javier into refunding the exorbitant (for Ecuador) overcharge. Be prepared to be dimed/dollared to death for what is usually provided to short-term guests, e.g. got 1/2 roll of toilet paper. Costs 20 cents to be given more. Breakfast cost $5.50 each (high for Ecuador). Wi-fi unstable & intermittent. Hair dryer burned out by creative electrical lines with protective shielding cracked run over stairs into room via wet garden. Pans with peeling non-stick surface. Used sponge for dish washing found holding a window open in the kitchen. Cupboards unusable because of intense smell of mold when opened. Filthy bathroom grout on floors, in tub. Mold in fridge. Doors to room not secure. Push button lock only, no dead bolt, chain, etc and front gate open much of the time without oversight. 1 key only available to tenants per room. Inconvenient to call management when adults with different schedules need access to their room. You would do so much better to stay in one of the wonderfully maintained lodgings available in Cuenca for the same price where you will be welcomed and provided true service. See La Casa del Centro, for example, where we also stayed. I believe we are not the only ones with issues here. Our tour guide when asked his opinion, without prompting, said, "I have rescued some from there." Seems he was called upon to move at least a few persons who also were not happy.

I regret you had a bad experience with us, although I want to express my point of view in some of our statements You had use an intermediate in order to place your reservation, our rates as I showed to you at your checking in, are published on our web site and I was willing to charge you the exact amount than it is published. I didn’t know until later, than you had paid (and make a contract) less than our rack rates. unfortunally, that was the intermediate mistake. When you show me that, I happily accept to charge you the amount you agreed originally, even though It was less than my published rate. By the way we are no longer using any external web site booking intermediate. As I can see in your review , you were taking this as a “bad business practice” when it was just a misunderstanding than I immediately toke a positive action about it, from then on I can clearly understand why things look so bad to you. We have a device to take humidity out of the apartments, and we use them on a regular basis , however the apartments you had used are very close to the river , no more than 40 yards. So you will always fell a little damp in the environment. 5, 50 USD is our more expensive breakfast: coffee, bread, juice, eggs, marmalade, granola, fruits, yogurt, milk ,etc. this is not expensive for Ecuador. Our regular breakfast is just 3 USD. You should bring that up as well. We don’t charge for toilet paper!!! We provide it at you arrival, with soap as well. We are a hotel apartment; so our guest normally, fixed their meals, clean their kitchen utensils, bake something etc. So after your check in, as it is mentioned in your room information booklet. We don’t provide any personal cleaning items. Our staff does the cleaning once a day as you experienced You were kind of rude when you said you where having issues with the internet, when you simply put a wrong password. The internet had been and still is very stable. Some people haven’t had rescue yet, we have currently guest staying for several months (3-4) and someone almost a year!

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Apartamentos Otorongo in Cuenca. We were there for two weeks. The courtyard grounds were beautiful, lush and green. The room was comfortable, clean, and right out our back door was the Rio Tomebamba where we enjoyed our morning cup of coffee. The owners and operators Xavier and Samara Montezuma were very accommodating and answered our many questions concerning local restaurants, bus lines, and the many interesting things to do and see. The prices were very reasonable and we will stay there again in the future. Tracy and Donna...3/3/13
