Very friendly, welcoming and clean rooms. Owner was very helpful in accommodating last minute tours. Decent breakfast included with the price. One possible improvement is to hand out front door key so you don’t have to wake anyone up by ringing the doorbell

I went there at the end of last year for three days and it was a very beautiful place. I really enjoyed its facilities, the breakfast food was good, but the best thing is its garden and decoration. It is a very large house, the tram is close by and there is a lot of commerce around, so we always find somewhere to eat. We didn't use the kitchen, so I can't say how their kitchen is, but in terms of decoration and common areas these were very comfortable. If I return to Cuenca I think I would stay there again.

Centrally located in Cuenca’s beautiful historical centre, Casa Macondo is a small family run hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Most of the rooms face a lovely garden away from the street, so noise will not be a problem. There’s also a cozy lounge by the lobby. Guests tend to be older Europeans and North Americans - some are staying for weeks or even months, a testament to the hotel’s popularity. Breakfast is included, but can get repetitive if you’re staying more than a few days. The only drawback is that you have to ring the bell to get through the front door, and at night (after 10 pm or so), it may take a while before someone opens the door. Highly recommended overall.

The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast was delicious, and the garden courtyard was a peaceful and quiet retreat. A friendly staff helped me enjoy my stay in Cuenca. They were knowledgable about the area and happy to assist with suggestions and directions.

We stayed two nights here, could have stayed longer- so comfortable and quiet with very helpful and friendly staff. Beautiful surroundings, the garden, access to a kitchen, good breakfast, wifi, hot water- so much to recommend it. No downside at all. Very good location in a beautiful city, do choose it!

Never having been to Ecuador, and not speaking Spanish other than "tourista" level, I had some apprehension starting out. No need. Most of the staff speaks enough English that you can get what you need, as long as you are friendly, and can gesture. Everyone is greeted w/ a smile upon entry, and that includes morning or evening. (Once, in my case, very early morning. )
Hostel Macondo is also very clean...often the staff rushes in to clean the bathroom between occupants, as some of the rooms share a bathroom. Extra blankets are available, if you need help adjusting to the altitude's effect on your bloodstream. Hot coffee in the morning, included with your room fee, can help w/ the temperature and altitude, as well. Breakfast is made by your friendly, efficient staff, and, while simple if you opt for the included Continental breakfast, is tasty and filling.
The library, hammock, patio seating, and inner courtyard make for great ambiance. Hostel Macondo is a relaxing place to stay, while you visit or work in Cuenca.

I highly recommend this hostal to anyone loking for comfortable , affordable lodging. The rooms are very clean and comfortable. THe building is charming with it's colonial features and courtyards. The room price includes a very nice breakfast served buffet style. Unlike the majority of hotels we have stayed at the hot water here actually works and stays hot the entire time you are in the shower...

Overall, this was my favorite hotel of two that I stayed in while in Cuenca. It was the less expensive and had fewer amenities.
We rented a suite so we had a stove and refrigerator in our room. Unfortunately, they don't have queen size or larger beds. The desk clerk asked if we wanted a double bed or two single beds. We goofed. For people our size, we should have asked for the single beds! The bed was fine (but narrow), but the pillows were too thin to use if you sleep on your side. We put coats under them and that worked out fine.
The Wi-Fi worked pretty well in our room. There was no TV available. The bathroom was fine, with the only "problem" being that the toilet doesn't accept toilet paper. So, you have to use the wastebasket provided for this purpose. They provide soap, but no shampoo, etc.
I did feel that this was good value for the money. The included continental breakfast was quite good. And, for a dollar or two more, you could get pretty much anything you'd like: cereal, bacon, eggs, fruit bowl, etc.
The staff was very friendly and seemed very genuine in their friendliness. The guests were quite international and were also friendly. There were several guest with small children. This all helped give the hotel a "family" feel.
One thing that I didn't like is that there is an additional 5% fee for using a credit card. Credit cards don't seem to be commonly used in Ecuador. But, I don't like to carry a lot of cash. So, take your pick.
There was a small garden which was pretty. And, our room was about 50 years from the street, so the street noise was minimal.

My husband and I spent 6 nights at the Macondo and found the locaton of this property to be perfect for easily walking to most places. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and a continenral breakfast was included which for an additional 2$ you could upgrade to a freshly made hot meal. There was a fridge available for guests use and a lovely courtyard where travelers all gathered at the end of the day. We had room number 10 which was huge and had 2 double beds plus a single bed, had a large bathroom with tub and shower and our cost $36.00 for the 2 of us. The hostal is extremely secure, rooms are cleaned daily, fabulous location, would highly recommend this place.
