Bit divided of how to review this hotel. Staff is the biggest value, close by is the location of the hotel, for this I must give the highest mark. Parking is available on site but with limited space (cost you 22eur day extra), when no more space they will put your car in garage which is not property of the hotel and that cost 34 eur/day. You cannot reserve your parking when coming.
Being old and protected building it cannot be any escavations within so there is no pool in hotel. Cleaniless of the room, I would say they are doing it the best they can but upper part of the room with huge window's and curtains are not cleaned properly, also spaces in between double windows. I am not a fan of catpets in hotel and on some places especially at staircase carpets are worn out. Now, bed is too low from the floor, so senior guests with knee or leg problems will have difficult time to get up from it. Matreess is hard comparing to fluffy almost airy pillows. 5* hotel without water kettle and coffee machine, no complementary water on arrival. TV programs available heavily favouring, German, Arab and Russian guests. Not a single TV channel with music programme. Last night in hotel we saw a lady knocking on the room doors handing over sweets to whoever was in rooms. I am of opinion that she should have list of occupied rooms and to hand over it in all rooms except the one with Do not disturb sign. Still room for improvement.

I was a little apprehensive about staying here as I get very irritated when I stay in five star hotels and they are less than perfect (am much more forgiving with hotels with 3 stars). I also worried a little about taking the cheapest category room as I had seen some reviews where people who book those end up in horrible little attic rooms facing a wall. But I decided to give it a try and I actually wanted queen size bed and not a king with a sofa bed sitting area.
The start of the stay could have been better. The day of my arrival was the end of a private tour my guide dropped me off at the hotel at about 8 PM. The doormen, who some reviewers described as not very helpful, rushed to open the the car doors as soon as we stopped. I had wanted to exchange a few words with the guide, and I sat turned towards him so I thin the correct thing would have been to wait discreetly until I showed intent to exit the car by turning towards the door. There was nobody else there and the driveway is wide so it's not as we were blocking anyone. At check-in, I wasn't offered anything to drink and the free champagne in the lobby mentioned by several reviewers was nowhere to be seen.
However, I was happy when I saw my room on the second floor with two large windows with a view of the beautiful park in front of the railway station. The room looked exactly like the photos on the website. I had some wine in the bar; the wine, complimentary snacks and service was good. Then I ordered dinner to my room. Delivery was fast and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Took some wine from the minibar which was also reasonably priced. The next day I realised I that I had forgotten to put my shoes out for polishing (included in room price) so I called the reception and they said to put them out and someone would come up. By the time I had taken a shower and was ready to go out, the shoes were returned and polished.
Breakfast was excellent, a buffet with an amazing selection of high quality products as well as dishes ordered and served by the table. A very large breakfast room with plenty of space and fast and efficient service. After breakfast I noted that sparkling wine was present on a table next to the staircase (I suppose they remove it in the evening not to compete with the bar) so I had some before leaving.
I really liked this hotel and it is a true five star despite the doorman being to efficient and lack of welcome drink (compensated by goodbye drink several hours after checking out). I actually liked it so much that I won't complain about the shower doors being stained (if from soap or hard water I don't know). I highly recommend it. Ask fo a city view as the view over the court yard isn't much fun (I could see it from the corridor). It's a bargain to stay in a such a luxury hotel for 180 euros. If I go back to Zagreb I will stay there again.

We stayed here whilst undergoing dental treatment in Croatia.

We arrived at the hotel post our first visit to the dental clinic and were exhausted in pain and just wanted somewhere to rest and recover.

We checked in quickly were shown to our room which was spotless had opening windows (very important to me ) bed and linens of high quality, spacious bathroom with tub and fluffy towels.

We ordered room service which was delivered quickly and they accomodated soft foods etc due to dental work.

We stayed for 2 days whilst treatment continued and after each appointment we both looked forward to returning to our hotel.

The hotel feels calm and comforting bar service smooth attentive and fast.

The square outside has some wonderfull bars etc and is a great place to sit a while their is a shopping centre with all you could require especially hot soft Pizza a staple for us.

We stayed at another hotel for our second visit as this hotel was full and we missed the Espalande and its comforts.

We are returning to Croatia for a full week on the last leg of our dental treatment (hopefully) and have chosen the Espalande for our entire stay sure in the knowledge
of a quality experience.

We took a suite and a twin room for my family. They gave us a corner suite and a connected twin. We opened the door between the room so we all had a living room and 2 bedrooms from each side. The location is very central so some "troly" or bus noise is expected (no noise from 23:00 - 6:00). Due to corona, breakfast was served by waiters (no buffet). Excellent choices. Avocado toast / eggs Benedict etc.... Eating on the balcony was nice as well. You can go for a morning run in the boulevard or the park near by. Also Croatian food fest and Hamburger fest was in the evening in the parks near by. Try to use UBER instead of taxi because its a lot cheaper: Taxi can take 280 KUNA while Uber will take 100 Kuna. The hotel is very recommended for all.

Built originally for accommodating the passengers of the Oriental Express, this hotel is majestically located the near main square and within walking distance from major sights. The interior of hotel was tastefully appointed. Given the level of room rates, I would expect provision of kettle and tea bags/ instant coffees but that had to be requested through room service. The bathroom was a bit small and would be completely wet after a shower owing to lack of a shower curtain. The valet parking is highly recommended. It was reasonably priced and no more expensive than parking at the public car park nearby.

Stayed in a hotel for several days, overall that was a good stay.

Good location - close to main attractions, yet no sound bothered fron the street

Very good room service-totally customizable orders and made quick a tasty. Custom cocktails served as well.
By the way the first hotel to offer multiple takeaway sets ( for instance, "picknick" with wines, fruits and sanwitches) and a preorder fine dining set for a romantic dinner in room. overall room service seemed to me very advanced, good job!

the main drawback was poor sond isolation in the room - seemed like a thin wall between the rooms.. weird and a thing to consider.

fine breakfast, quick and smooth checkout.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and loved everything about it. Firstly, the hotel has a great deal of historical significance given it dates back to 1925 and provided accommodation for the passengers of the Orient Express. The staff at reception and day tour bookings were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was beautiful and impeccably maintained, with a large bathroom. The hotel building and its interiors are extremely impressive. The hotel is in a quiet location near the botanical gardens and only a short walk away from the key sites. The restaurant food and service were also of a very high standard. I felt the room rates were very reasonable given the location and the luxury status of this hotel. It's hands down the best hotel in Zagreb or even Croatia for me.

We were so looking forward to spending our last night in Croatia at this historic hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted right away by the concierge, who took our bags and shown to a seat for checking in. Surprisingly, the young girl at reception was abrupt and indifferent, while we did notice that all the other reception clerks were engaged and friendly. We had booked a Superior King Room, and requested an upper floor with a view, but were disappointed to be given a 2nd floor interior room. That said, we certainly understand that not all room requests can be accommodated and the room was quite lovely. Unfortunately, however, there was a wedding reception in the hotel's ballroom that evening, which our room overlooked, and the dance music continued into the early hours of the morning, 3:30am. Other than getting very little sleep that night the room was beautiful, with a large washroom, and a king bed with comfortable pillows. We appreciated the thoughtful addition of glasses (beer, champagne and wine) and a corkscrew. The location was perfect for visiting the charming old town of Zagreb, and we enjoyed a drink at the bar as well as coffee on the lovely terrace the following morning. We didn't have time for breakfast, but it looked wonderful. Our checkout was a much more pleasant experience, with a very friendly reception clerk. I would recommend to anyone wishing to stay at this hotel to ask about events booked in the ballroom, or to insist on an outside view room. Note that we stayed on a Saturday, which would typically be the night for wedding receptions.

The biggest criticism we have is of indifferent, inattentive and cheerless service in the Zinfandels restaurant. The complete opposite of that from the mostly female staffed waiting in the Brasserie which was exemplary. The Zinfandel waiters should take lessons from the Brasserie staff. We ate in Zinfandels 4 times as well a just drinks/snacks twice. Every time, the service was poor.

Also, the luxurious room was spoilt by a poorly designed/fitted shower. Its over the middle of the very curvy sided bath with a shower screen that only spans one end of the bath. All this adds up to a dangerous and difficult to use shower. There should be a shower mat to prevent slipping on the curvy sided bath and the shower head should be at the end of the bath where the shower screen is. A couple of hand holds wouldn't go amiss for the elderly/unsteady too.

The hotel in other respects is great.

We stayed for 3 nights in this hotel. It is big, beautiful and you can feel the historic value in every corner. Staying in this hotel felt like being part of something magnificent and timeless. Rooms are nice with big windows. Bathrooms are updated and have double sinks. Service is impeccable and staff is well trained. A couple of notes - shower stalls are not spacious and more of a tiny squeeze. Also the level of the hotel require to have bidets installed but overlooked while renovating. Another suggestion - more outlets in the room are needed for proper charging of all electronics. Another comment - breakfast should not cost like in 6 star hotel in NYC (too expensive for the location!).

Dear Julie, thank you for your kind inquiry. Zagreb's Botanical Garden is a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Dolac, the most famous and largest outdoor market located on Ban Josip Jelačić Square, is a 14-minute walk away from the hotel. You can also get to Dolac by public transport, specifically by tram lines 6 and 13 to Ban Josip Jelačić Square. The route from the hotel to the square itself includes two tram stops. Kindest regards, Mihaela Gržan
