2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
In 1979 UNESCO declared the colonial city of La Antigua Guatemala as a World Cultural Heritage Site turning it to a recognized treasure of exceptional value before the eyes of the world. In the XVII Century, the Convent of Santo Domingo was one of the largest in America and in 1773, the earthquake of Santa Marta almost totally destroyed it. In 1989, the project known as Casa Santo Domingo was developed with the primary objective of rescuing the vestiges of the Convent and Temple buried under tons of rubble. Hotel Museum Spa Casa Santo Domingo progressively emerged where each corner is a page lost in time that joins others to form a beautiful chapter of the great book of our history.

Another beautiful stay. It’s our third time coming here and we already have plans to return. Spa rooms are lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our massages and soaking in their relaxation pools. Our favorite activity was strolling the grounds at night. Only two things of note where improvements are needed - 1) Our room smelled of a strong septic odor by the bathroom tub (which we did not use). They had a dehumidifier going so I’m sure the hotel was aware. We kept a window open. 2) Guests at the spa can be inappropriately loud and should be asked to lower voices. This happened a few times and we were sunny guest behavior at a spa. One night several loud people were splashing, playing and yelling at the spa pool. It violated the spa rules and was unpleasant. The spa staff did not ask them to behave properly. Staff should speak to loud guest. They do not. Despite this we still consider it a 5 star hotel. I only mention the items above in hope that it helps the managers know what concerns guests have. It is a lovely hotel that offers a unique experience staying in a museum, ruins and spa surrounded by artwork.

This is a gorgeous property with many unique features: a renovated monasteryvwith artifacts, statues and many other original pieces, from centuries past tastefully presented throughout, a great restaurant, museums on-site, and beautiful trees, plants and patios. They are also pet friendly but the price is hefty for that ( USD 60 per night). It was a special place at a special time with visitors from abroad wanting to spend Holy Week in Antigua. A luxury option on the whole, one you could appreciate when price is not your main concern. The hotel is wonderful!

I struggled with how I should rate this hotel and decided to give it three stars. We stayed at Santo Cielo, the cabins on the mountain alongside the hotel. There were some major mishaps and disconnects that left my husband and I furious and ready to rate Hotel Casa Santo Domingo with one star. However, the "butlers" and security guards at Santo Cielo were like superheroes, solving the problem, quickly and conveniently each time. They should be paid more, and they could give upper management some valuable input when it comes to service and planning. Getting to one star in a review should be almost impossible for this hotel because it is exquisite. Even if you don't stay at this hotel, visitors to Antigua should come to the museum to see the ruins, art, Mayan artifacts, and most of all, how beautifully the ruins have been integrated into a hotel, museum and conference center. I found myself gazing at ceilings and doors. Whether old or new, it all works together. Some areas are quite dark, adding to the atmosphere. We used the pool for two days and thought it was beautiful. The chairs had big fluffy cushions, and the pool was clean and spacious. Placed in the middle of the ruins, flowering and lush green trees and plants, and then further out, volcanoes and steep majestic mountains, it was a wonderful way to spend time. While it was the priciest restaurant we encountered in Guatemala, the main hotel restaurant was also the best, offering gluten free rolls and other gluten free options. The hamburgers were fantastic as were our breakfasts. And it is important to note that compared to restaurants in major cities--Tokyo, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, London--the prices at the restaurant are a bargain. The cabins at Santo Cielo are gorgeous. They are high-luxury, with a butler (shared by all of the cabins). The cabin interior is modern in design and beautiful. Our only desire was some additional indoor furniture--perhaps a set of chairs and small table by the glass doors. The downside of the cabins is that they are quite isolated. If you do not have a car, the regular access is a shuttle bus that runs every hour and a half. When we checked into the hotel, our room wasn't ready yet. I asked the desk clerk if our luggage would be brought to our room. She said yes. When we got all the way to our room, I asked our butler where our luggage was. It turns out, we were supposed to bring the luggage ourselves on the shuttle (What!? I thought this was a luxury hotel). After some discussions back with the home office, our butler ended up retrieving our luggage from the hotel. That evening, we decided to order room service. I suffer from gluten intolerance and cannot eat wheat. Alas, there was almost nothing on the room service menu I could eat. I ended up eating a Caesar salad, minus croutons. For breakfast, there were even fewer. Then, when we reached the path to the security station, we met our butler for the shift and he drove us to the security station. There, we learned that the shuttle wasn't running for the day due to a holiday. No one alerted us when we booked the hotel or when we checked in. The plan was for us to take Uber. The problem was that we don't speak Spanish, and our cell service wasn't working well on the mountain. Once again, the butler saved the day, driving us to the hotel for the day. At the end of the day, we went to the front desk and asked for the butler to come pick us up. When we checked out, rather than making us wait for a shuttle, our butler requested and was granted permission to take us with our luggage down to the hotel. We greatly appreciated this. The two butlers we had were terrific. If you don't mind running/walking up and down a steep mountain, Santo Cielo becomes a more appealing option. However, the path is mostly the road, which you must share with vehicles.

Outstanding!!! I brought a group of women to Guatemala and we all stayed here. First, the hotel is stunning. I have stayed at many hotels in Antigua and the ambience and decor are as beautiful as you will find! And, the spa is as luxurious and peaceful as they get. The location is perfect and the staff could not have been more accommodating. We had a small mix up with rooms and the manager, Gerardo Garela, took care of it right away. He made sure everyone was happy and went out of his way to follow up with me to be sure it was resolved. The staff at the front desk were all very helpful. Gabriella and all of the people we interacted with did all they could to facilitate my group and our experience. I will definitely return and look forward to staying here again.

I hate having to write bad reviews but here we are.... I have traveled to over 69 countries and my family itself is in the hotel industry. I usually only travel and stay in 5 star hotels so I expect 5 star service where I do. After reading some of the reviews below, I am shocked how many bad reviews there were for this hotel. I stayed 3 nights ta this hotel, originally only had 2 nights booked and wanted to extend my stay for a 3rd night, but after 2 unanswered emails I decided to just go ahead and book another suite. Granted all that was left were the very expensive suites because a wedding was blocked and booked during the stay. First 2 nights were not bad, the room we had was a bit of a dungeon with no windows for $450... but that is alright. On the day we had to change rooms, I made sure to let the front staff know I was switching rooms and to have my key ready and my bags moved from storage to the new room so we could have an easy transition. I spent the full day walking around and decided to head back to the hotel at 5pm to get ready for dinner. I approached the front desk asking for my key and the check in guy had no idea what i was asking for.... no key no information. No problem, I will redo my check in. 20 minutes later I am still not checked in... not only that, my check in guy left to go pick up DOMINOS PIZZA ( the sad part was I caught him) and I stood at the desk asking for someone to finish my check in.... 10 more minutes passed and I finally got a key. I would like to point out my last night I booked a suite that cost me $900.... To make matters worse... I wanted to go and check out the pool before dinner.... i was not provided a fob... I went back to front desk to talk to a manager for all my inconveniences, to find no manager on duty so they sent me front house in charge. Hilarious... it was the guy who checked me in and left to get food.... he sure got an ear full from me. He didn't know what to do to make things better besides giving me a fob that no longer worked because the facilities were closed..... I wanted something to make my stay better so finally I was given the general manager of the hotel, who was surprised to hear of my experience. I would have settled for breakfast for my final day... however, without my knowledge I had breakfast prepaid for all 3 days of my stay and was not told so, so I made other arrangements to have breakfast elsewhere. I have never been so disappointed in customer service before, whether it is $5 or $500, everyone should have a great experience.

I have never written a negative review before now, but I had such a frustrating experience I feel its important to share. As a seasoned global traveler, rarely have I witnessed such a disorganized state of affairs as I found in Hotel Casa Santa Domingo. A warning to all travelers who need to use their room in the day that this hotel cannot provide a smooth transition between its rooms - even when you have paid an extra $194 for an upgrade to ensure it. I was forced out of my room promptly at noon and not given access to my new room until after 3pm. I was offered the bustling hotel entrance for my private zoom meeting as there was no quiet place to offer me when I needed it most, including my own room. I only paid the upgrade to be in a better room thinking it would be a smooth transition. Had I known I would be evicted at noon, I never would have paid it. Won’t be making the mistake of upgrading here again. On a more positive note the hotel is ideally located, has lush gardens and sweeping ocean views.

They charged us full price and then gave us a room with a construction directly on the roof. When I went to ask for a room change, they begrudgingly accepted and changed me to another room without a window, right next to the place where they hold the weddings. The guy in the Front Desk, whose name was Fernando, had a smug attitude and seemingly no intention of helping us. I stayed in this hotel a few times before this, but after this experience I can confidently say I will never stay here again.

I’m sure you already know this is a wonderful resort- type hotel set in the ruins of a fifteenth century monastery. The grounds are exquisite. There are art and antiquity museums and shops right here to keep you occupied. There is a full spa to relax in. The lovely pool has plenty of lounges and waiters to take your orders. The restaurant has an excellent breakfast buffet. Antigua Tours has an office on site that can reserve tours or shuttles. We took the “walking” tour to the top of Pacaya volcano. ( I highly suggest you reserve a horse unless you are in excellent shape. It is 5 1/2 miles long walking on uneven surfaces but the views are spectacular!) I have stayed in many hotels in many different countries and the thing that sets this one apart is the lovely staff. So friendly and welcoming. Stay here. You won’t regret it!

For the most part, I really liked this hotel but you need to understand what it is. You are not getting a small, intimate boutique hotel. You are getting a large hotel with several guest room wings, multiple pools and a spa, two museums, several restaurants, a gift shop, and a chapel where you can get married. Depending on where your room is, it might take 10 minutes or more to lock your room, walk through the grounds, and exit the hotel onto the street. Also note that the hotel is set apart from the main touristy area by about a 10 minute walk. This means it is quiet, but it made us a little more hesitant to walk anywhere outside the hotel after dark. This hotel is essentially a resort, and although it is beautiful once you walk in it is also quite confusing to know where to go to check in. We did not see any signs pointing us toward a front desk and ended up walking around dragging our bags for quite a while. Once at the front desk there was a big line. They only had 2 people working so we waited about 20 minutes to check in. Once we checked in, everything went smoothly. I loved all the history around us, as the hotel is set in an old convent. It was so cool to walk through the ruins and to see all the remnants of the past as you walk down the hall. I also loved how you could see Fuego and Acatanengo in the distance whenever you passed through one of the many courtyards. Our room was beautiful, with a fireplace and a high vaulted ceiling. We were staying in one of the spa rooms, which was set in a separate area with private access to the spa (which was accessed from our balcony). The spa, private pool, and hot tubs were gorgeous! I just wish we had a way to lock our room when we headed over there, as there is no lock on the balcony door (only the front door). Luckily the hotel provides a safe so we put our valuables inside it before heading to the spa, but I still didn’t love leaving everything open and unlocked. I can’t speak to the other rooms but I would highly recommend the spa access rooms. They are spacious, feel very private, and I appreciated the free water and coffee kept at the entrance to this wing. The water pressure in the shower is also great. We stayed on the second floor and it was amazing to be able to see Agua Volcano from our balcony! If a resort is what you are looking for, this is definitely the hotel for you.
