We loved our stay at the Posada. The pool , restaurant and most importantly room were all really good.

The hotel is right at the end of a road in Panajachal and from it's back gates you get access lake atitlan. Staff were all very friendly and the place was super clean.

The pool was hardly used and has a really cool slide which we used ! Bar service for drinks was there. One thing to note is that food and drink is quite expensive there, as it's a really touristy area, but the quality is good.

Breakfast there is lots of choice of made to order foods with fruit or juices. Waitress staff English wasnt great, but we made it work ! They were very patient and attentive.

The rooms were a good size with 2 x double beds in and a lake view which was stunning. We were going to do our laundry there but it was a little expensive (as per above)

Cant fault this hotel for anything really, would highly recommend if in the area.

We stayed 8th to 10th of March

We found Don Rodrigo to be a large, old, but lovely hotel established in a colonial compound in the heart of old-town Antigua. Don Rodrigo’s gardens and grounds are beautiful and its staff gracious and accommodating. A few points: I selected Don Rodrigo because of its prime location and the 60%+ room discount for our stay. The list price posted at reception for that room is $240, which would not be worth it for us. [We paid $105 before taxes, etc.] All four of us stayed in room 305, which we’d recommend given the balcony seating/tables right outside the room that overlook the courtyard. Don Rodrigo’s website promises Wifi, If that's important to you, know that Wifi reception is only available in the courtyard, not rooms. Directly across the street is a brewery, Antigua Cerveza, which will allow you to buy pints to drink in the (less crowded) hotel courtyard/your room as long as you return the glass. The restaurant, which has decent, if not unremarkable food, is overpriced. However, its location in town makes this hotel one to consider if you can get a discount.

Stepping into Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo was like taking a journey back to the early days of the Spanish colonial city in Guatemala. The doors, ceilings, courtyard, floors, and decor capture that time to make staying at the hotel like living in a museum.

The hotel is lovingly restored and maintained. My favorite room was the restaurant with a spectacular intricate carved wood ceiling painted green and other colors. There's a wonderful old fountain on one wall. In the mornings and evenings, a band plays Spanish music. At night, dancers in costumes perform as well. The room, performers and excellent food and drinks make a visit to the restaurant a don't miss event. When we came back to Antigua a second time before our flight out, we decided to go back to the restaurant for dinner again because we loved it so much. We especially enjoyed the beef tenderloin and sangria.

The courtyard is lush and green, with a series of colorful paintings set on easels capturing various sites, and flora and fauna of Guatemala. Flowering plants and the chirping of birds add to the ambiance making for a romantic and charming setting.

The rooms line the courtyard with eclectic sitting areas with furniture consistent with the colonial era. There are large pottery urns sprinkled throughout providing water for drinking.

The contrast between the hectic street right outside of the hotel, smack in the middle of all of the action, and the serene open hallways and courtyard is striking.

We were a bit disappointed our room was very small with just a standard double bed. My husband is 6 foot 6 and it was snug. The only window was a hinged opening in the heavy dark wood antique door out to the courtyard. There was no safe in the room which concerned us because we didn't want to carry all of our cash with us.

We ended up hiding money in the room. I suspect we didn't need to work so hard to hide it because when we left money out to tip the people who made up our room, they didn't take it. This happened in other hotels in Guatemala as well. There's security at the front door and the staff members were all warm, friendly, eager to assist, and competent.

We didn't expect air-conditioning, and there wasn't any. During the day, the room did get a bit warm and stuffy, but by evening, it cooled off enough to be comfortable.

Despite the hotel's age, it was spotless and well-maintained. We ended up staying in three different hotels in Antigua during our trip. This one was my favorite, despite the small room, because the attention to every detail was so thorough. It is an unforgettable place and among the highlights of our trip.

Everything at thus hotel was superb. The room, the ambiance, the location, the interior multiple gardens and balconies. Buttge best part was the kind and attentive service and help of all the staff, starting with the office staff with daily greetings and the restaurant staff. Don't miss the wonderful breakfast selections. Even though the small city has so many good restaurants, I had breakfast here each day and two other meals during my five day stay.

This hotel is charming in an old historic building with beautiful courtyards flowers and a friendly helpful staff. The reason I can’t give it any more stars is the bed was very hard and I had trouble sleeping every night, and the room was not clean enough. I asked for a fan and they gave me one and it was black with dirt and dust. When I cleaned the curtain rod in preparation for my laundry that also came up black. Whenever I walked barefoot across the room my feet got dirty. The breakfast was decent with minimal choices as I was on a tour and it was included.

This place was absolutely beautiful. The room was impeccable and located in the main area near the plaza, churches and the town’s arch. The food in the restaurant was tasty. The staff was amazing too. One down side to the hotel is the lack of AC in the room, you do get a fan if you request one but is very tiny.

Courtyard is pretty. We found our room to be very basic ( no charm); thought the bed was comfortable & room clean. Our room had cheap carpeting ( some rooms have title floors). Not enough towels & those we had were quite thin & no washcloths. They had those huge old fashioned keys that were really difficult to use ( suggest they change to something more modern & easier ). We were with a group & had dinner which was ok; nothing special. Unfortunately the entertainment was in another room which was a shame. They offer filtered water throughout hotel & two bottles in room which was nice. Best part: Great location! We only stayed for one night which was enough.

We really liked this hotel. It's ideally located for exploring Antigua, right next to the famous arch. Beautiful old building.
Rooms are set around courtyards filled with gardens. One thing to beware is to ask for an inside room. Some on the outside back onto busy cobbled streets and have noise 24 hours. We were allocated 107 which is one of those. They quickly and helpfully moved us to a quieter room.
Live music at breakfast was an unexpected treat. The breakfast tortillas are a must.

I booked a table a few days in advance in the restaurant for our last evening in Guatemala. I had the lovely surprise to have a central table for 2 near the musicians!
There were two large groups of tourists and a few individual tables in a large, traditionally decorated restaurant hall.
The music was lovely, and the 8 dancers professional, with eleborate masks and costumes, performing a few local dances.
The dances should have been explained and presented to appreciate fully the experience.

The food was pretty tasteless and expensive, but the service swift and friendly.

Answer from HappyPenny

The rooms are not air-conditioned. Air-conditioning is not really needed in Antigua, since the temperatures are so mild. Windows open out into the courtyard, if you want cooling in the summer. And for the winter, there are wood-burning fireplaces in each room, which you can ask the hotel staff to light for you. Hope this information is helpful!
